Face Id not working after iOS 14 update -iPhone X

Hi, my iphone X is suddenly not recognizing my face after the iOS 14 update yesterday. I thought a face id reset will solve the issue, but it is still not working. When trying to set the face id, it is showing the error of ‘move the iphone a little higher/trlower’. Nothing works after multiple attempts. Is this an iOS14 issue?

SOLVED: Hi everyone! I had my appointment with Apple Genius Bar today. This is a faulty hardware issue. This is not related to iOS 14 nor will it be fixed with a new update. Sorry to say you'll have to pay $650 to replace your phone. Luckily I was still under my 1-Year limited warranty. The employee told me there is a chip in the hardware that has failed. Thankfully I walked out with a new phone at no cost. But I wanted to share my experience in hopes that it gives you some answer to this issue.

Seems like Apple is aware about this bug but have no Solution or will not fix it.

it is definitely a malfunction caused by the update- for me it occurs immediately after updating from iOS 14.0 to 14.01.

unfortunately apple does not supply signed iOS 14.0 anymore, so no rollback is possible.

I am as an engineer with experience in software testing and validation think it is one of the following issues:

1st an unexpected software (sw) related bug or

2nd an sw bug that destroy certain hardware like dot projector due to overvoltage

or 3rd cheap way for planned obsolescence

its a petty that apple left his customers unaware and send out an not well tested firmware

Same for me: Since iOS14.0.1: no Face ID. If I try to recalibrate it: it keeps telling my to move up or down my head. Scan process never start. If I look upward, focus fails. If I try to take portrait, it tells me that I need to take my face away (it thinks I'm too close from my phone while I'm about 50cm/70cm from it)

I'll try to upgrade to iOS14.1, but I have no WiFi Access at work... Too bad that I can't upgrade over 4G (unlimited plan faster than my home wifi).

So I was talking with Apple Support last night for like an hour and a half and they said based on the diagnostics they ran my phone is perfectly fine. However when I went into the Apple Store and they checked they said I had broken hardware. So it would appear that someone doesn’t know how to do their job or even the diagnostic scripts have bugs in them. They gave me some pointers I’m going to try to see if I can get it to work, but I’ll let you know if I have any luck

My dot projector seems Off. (iPhone Xs Max; Face ID stopped working since update to 14.0.1 and still broken as of 14.1)

Phone did never fell off and is in immaculate condition. Very frustrating!

If it's software issue => Pour software support

If it's hardware issue => Poor hardware quality (failure after 2 years)

In both cases, this phone is NOT WORTH the price.

For half the price, better take a xiaomi phone. I have a Apple ecosystem, but that's not as dramatic as no Face ID and no Touch ID.

But if that's the case and its stored and managed by hardware and it doesn't work, then it is a hardware problem, no?

That logic is kind of flawed. Most (if not all) of us in this forum are not technicians, programmers or developers, therefore how can we completely rule out whether or not the issue is hardware or software? Yet most of us agree that it is a software issue and not hardware.

I agree that after there initial testing they will almost always put it down to hardware if there is no definitive answer. However, as mentioned in my post, out of a lot of posts where people have been in touch with someone from apple, the one I quoted, seemed the most likely.

Because in my opinion its the update that triggers something same thing as they triggered the airpods to disconnect after awhile it has been paired or others can’t connect their airpods (like mine too — got all the bugs after the update lol even overheating of the device even its not in use!) my phone works really fine until the update got 3 major problems! Lucky i guess hahahhahah

in programmer’s world the ‘triggers’ are maybe the procedure or class or sub-program or function...it happens in any software not just ios..me myslef it happened esp modifying the program, sometimes in programming to be able to upgrade or modify it we turns off a function to focus on the ones we are trying to modify and forgot to turn it back on...

im not sayi nga that this exactly what happened with the ios upgrade but its a possibility...

Yup happened immediately after the upgrade to 14.1 and is still the same now with 14.2. My error message is that I can only set up Face ID after the phone has cooled down even if the phone is at normal room temperature. I do have to say my phone gets hot so much so I can fry eggs on it sometimes. Also only since the upgrade. It was perfectly fine before.

I have seen another post earlier where the person was able to go back to 13.7 and it was working the same as it was before the upgrade. I contacted a tech guy who I sometimes use for Apple jobs like on my old Mac or replacement of my hubby’s cracked screen and he stated Apple has broken the option to go back to iOS13.7.......since I don’t know how to go back I am stuck. I don’t have an old backup to go back to as I am not very diligent w backing up my phone. I have done every upgrade after the upgrade to 14.2: the overheating and battery drainage still exists. Face ID sometimes works sometimes doesn’t. So it’s now an intermittent problem but I hate that my phone reaches 40C and I can’t even hold it to my ear for a call and it is damaging to the battery.
