iOS 14: No longer charging

After upgrading to iOS 14 on my iPhone XS Max, everything seemed to be okay at first, but then tonight the phone decided it had had just about enough of that whole "charging" business. Tried it on multiple devices, across multiple different cables, including plugged into the wall. Tried hard reset. Tried it while the phone was powered off; in doing this, upon plugging in the cable, the phone powers on, so it clearly *recognizes* the cable plugged into it. No indication of even trying to charge, no chime, no green battery, nothing. As a result, it won't show up in iTunes, so I can't make a backup and restore the system to any previous state. Everything else seems to be functioning as it should.

All I can think is, since the unit clearly recognizes cables plugged into it and so the connector is probably functioning, that this is a software issue with iOS. Any thoughts on things to try?

I disassembled my iPhone (I am an engineer).

I checked the voltage level of my battery. It is 3.3 Volts. This voltage level means the battery is just empty. It was discharged to zero. But the iPhone is not able to charge it anymore. I tried a new original battery. And it works.

Summary

So, because of the charging problems after update of the iPhone to new iOS the battery was discharged to zero and the iphone was not able to charge it to an appropriate level.

  1. I want to check my old battery further if it is damaged or not.
  2. I want to check my new battery if it works properly to get this battery to zero and then charge it again to

the 100%.

Thank you for posting. I am dealing with somewhat the same issue. I have the new iPhone SE and was charging just fine prior to the update. The only difference is mine starts to charge and then just stops. I am using all apple charging product cables(no aftermarket items). Its very frustrating. I did a full wipe on the phone and restored from backup and still giving me issues. I just wanted to comment in hopes that this gets enough traction for Apple to address because its clearly a problem.

Hi,

like I wrote, I have the same problem with my iPhone XS. Check my update here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251804766?answerId=253535644022#253535644022

I went to Apple Store. They told me they were not able to test and to analyze the problem due to the dead iPhone. But they told to me also that is a hardware issue and the Battery and IOS 14 have nothing to do with it. (:D I don't believe that).

So, after that, I replaced my battery with new one (also original one, from other iPhone). My iPhone worked prety good some time, but then it did the same thing again. It did restart and started with a bad battery and without charging possibility.

This time is the voltage level of this second battery is about 3,7 volts and 37% of charge. But the battery is recognized by the iPhone like 1%.

So, like I already wrote here. If this has happened immediately after the update, your iPhone motherboard is 100% not faulty! Your battery went to something like 0% and is to weak to be charged from your iPhone because of to high current consumption. That is the reason you can't switch it on. If you are not able to charge it or to hold it turned on while next 5 days (until the optimization work is done), then you have to replace your battery with new one (better original). And you have to wait for all of these optimization processes to complete. Then your iPhone will 100% fine again!

Say these guys from Genius Bar, you got this information from a real genius guy. :)

This is a user forum. This problem is obviously limited to a small number of users and, believe it or not, Apple may be largely unaware of it. If *everyone* in this thread reported their issue to Apple, it might spur some research on their behalf. I was lucky, the Apple Store replaced my phone but, if they hadn't, I wouldn't have given up. There's clearly an issue here. Tell Apple.

Good advice, but you should also contact Apple Support using the link at the top of this page, as that creates an open ticket that is tracked and analyzed, and engineers then look through the logs for common problems. Visiting a genius bar does the same thing. Feedback isn’t that immediate.

I just sent a bug report ticket to support explaining this issue.

I encourage everyone who is having this problem to do the same by clicking on this link and reporting it also: https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Apple please escalate the widespread ongoing problem loyal

users of your iphone's are facing regarding their inability to charge their

iphones when iOS 14 is installed.

I'm using iOS 14.2 (not listed in your below drop down)

Apple has a software update 14.3 due out today yet with all

bug fixes listed in a preliminary report, yet amazingly this problem has been

overlooked and there is no mention of a fix in iOS14.3 for this serious issue

which most would think would to be priority one for apple in any future update.

Please find widespread reporting in the following three

Hi Baphijmm,

Try this and report back:

Make sure your iPhone it's backed up both via iTunes & iCloud for ease.

  1. Download the correct IPSW (iOS version) for your iPhone from https://ipsw.me/ and place somewhere convinient.
  2. Open iTunes & plug in your iPhone.
  3. Click on your device and go to Summary.
  4. Hold Shift key on your keyboard and click on Restore iPhone.
  5. Find the IPSW which you downloaded earlier and start your restore.

Let us know how this goes.

Ps your iPhone at least it's still on! :)

Edit: Sorry I just realised that your USB doesn't work!

Try putting your iPhone in recovery mode:

  1. Press and quickly release Volume Up followed by Volume Down buttons and then press and hold Power Button.
  2. If computer/iTunes sees it follow steps 1 to 5 as mentioned above.

There is no option to turn it off.

If We speak here about optimization work of the iPhone, we don't mean the optimization of the battery. We mean kind of work the CPU does after update the device to new iOS.

Some people report this optimization work affect the battery life time and the heating of the iPhone.

I guess there is the same issue here.

The real effect depends can depend on:

  • How big is the storage of your iPhone
  • How much data you have on it
  • How old is the baytery
  • And other hw indices

Update: I needed a phone for work and didn't want to switch to Android. So ... grumble, grumble, i begrudgingly bought a new one $$$ on Dec. 11th and the old 6S has been powered down sitting on a shelf since then.

I was intrigued by one of the posters recently who got it to charge while it was in "airplane" mode, I tried it again. I plugged in the cable, it charged. Plug/unplug/plug/unplug - it charged to 100%.

When I first encountered this problem I had tried every cable I had and none worked. Took it to Apple "Genius's", nope ... "we recommend you buy a new phone, there is no repair available".

Did it need to rest for 25 days? Who knows. A couple bits of information...

  1. The battery had declined to 19% when I plugged it in 25 days later.
  2. The phone was turned off during this time so no patches/updates snuck in there.
  3. Of course the phone started when I plugged it in (I hate that they force that).

It's hard to not join with the conspiracy theorists at this point suggesting the evil empire controlled all this. Sigh, I preferred the pride of being an Apple customer rather than just another controlled, frustrated customer.

I guess, the only real change that occurred (maybe, don't remember), is that when it miraculously started charging yesterday, it had no SIM card. So ... for someone who currently has this problem, try pulling the SIM card and trying the charge again.

(seems a pretty thin theory, but ... it's charged now and excepting every cable I have).

Good luck.

Bit of an update after further testing:

Headphone jack adapter also doesn't seem to function.

Plugging the phone into my (Windows) laptop caused my laptop to completely lose its mouse, and have an inexcusably difficult time shutting down. This, coupled with the aforementioned headphone jack issue, leads me to believe there's something royally wrong with how the phone handles USB now.

A friend of mine has a wireless charging pad he let me borrow. This works to charge the phone, in my case; I understand that's the exception, as many folks are having difficulty with their wireless charging. This is simply what I'm seeing, documenting it so Apple folks have another data point on something they desperately need to fix in the next few days.
