iOS 14: No longer charging

After upgrading to iOS 14 on my iPhone XS Max, everything seemed to be okay at first, but then tonight the phone decided it had had just about enough of that whole "charging" business. Tried it on multiple devices, across multiple different cables, including plugged into the wall. Tried hard reset. Tried it while the phone was powered off; in doing this, upon plugging in the cable, the phone powers on, so it clearly *recognizes* the cable plugged into it. No indication of even trying to charge, no chime, no green battery, nothing. As a result, it won't show up in iTunes, so I can't make a backup and restore the system to any previous state. Everything else seems to be functioning as it should.

All I can think is, since the unit clearly recognizes cables plugged into it and so the connector is probably functioning, that this is a software issue with iOS. Any thoughts on things to try?

I’m having this problem right now on my 7 Plus. This has happened to me about 13 times already. What I’ve noticed is that whenever my phone is processing too much like Twitter, discord, YouTube, and some games. It’ll not charge. What I’ve started to do is put my phone on airplane mode, delete all notifications, and close all applications, shut it down then turn it back on, and then I connect to power. It’ll then take a second but it’ll start charging. Definitely a software issue.

iPhone SE on iOS 14.0.1:

i tried something and it works for me. Clearly it’s a software problem

so I connected the charger THEN I turned off my phone to charge it will it’s off (hence illiminating the “software factor” from charging)

wait a couple of minutes then turn on ur iPhone again while connected ... it will continue charging

P.s.: i truned off a setting called optimized battery charging (Settings->battery-> battery health) idk if it’s related but this sequence worked for me

Hey all, my iPad has been doing this since Sunday (a few days after iOS was updated to 14.1). It’s been an issue all week. I spoke with support and they said to take it in. I did all the things posts suggest to retain battery but it was just not charging. I’m on it now and it’s fixed after factory reset. I had a backup so I wiped it, even though the battery wouldn’t charge more than about 24%. After the reset, I plug in USB-C and immediately it recognizes. It restored overnight and is back to normal now.

I’m hoping this helps others. Do a factory reset (reset settings didn’t work, has to be factory). I’m still on 14.0.1 and it’s working fine.

It is possible your charging port as some debris in it. Unplug the charger and use a flashlight to see if there is any debris in the charging port. If so, use a soft bristle brush to gently remove the debris from the port. Be careful while using the brush to remove the debris as the pins in the port that connect the lightning connector to the device are fragile. Once the debris has been removed then connect your device to iTunes to see if it recognizes your device.

Bit of an update after further testing:

Headphone jack adapter also doesn't seem to function.

Plugging the phone into my (Windows) laptop caused my laptop to completely lose its mouse, and have an inexcusably difficult time shutting down. This, coupled with the aforementioned headphone jack issue, leads me to believe there's something royally wrong with how the phone handles USB now.

A friend of mine has a wireless charging pad he let me borrow. This works to charge the phone, in my case; I understand that's the exception, as many folks are having difficulty with their wireless charging. This is simply what I'm seeing, documenting it so Apple folks have another data point on something they desperately need to fix in the next few days.

**UPDATE** I have had the same issue where my iPhone XS Max did not charge. I tried to update the iPhone through the iTunes app on PC, but my iPhone didn’t connect. When I tried a new charger that my friend just bought, it charged my phone. The problem could be the charger. Maybe the support of the charger on the newer version? TL;DR Get new charger and see if it works. You could get one for free if you recently bought your phone

I’ had the same problem and now it is resolved. I took my iPad to an Apple store yesterday. An Apple technician checked the Lightning Port with a small LED flashlight and found a small seed (Yes a small seed!) lodged in the port. He turned the iPad upside down and with a soft bristle brush gently brushed the seed out of the slot for the cable. He connected the iPad to a notebook computer with software on it to detect serial numbers and even though my iPad battery was totally dead the software was able to read the serial number of my iPad. He then plugged my iPad into a charging block and the iPad no longer displayed the graphic message to install a charging cable which meant that now the iPad recognized the charging cable and is able to charge. I took it home and was able to fully charge the iPad. Problem resolved!

IMPORTANT: The Apple tech advised that you should put the device upside down before clearing the port of debris, because the pins that hold the lightning connector point up, when the iPad is in normal orientation and that by turning it upside down the pins will be facing down leaving a clear but tiny horizontal space on the bottom of the port to clear out the debris. In addition he said the pins are very delicate and to be very gentle while clearing the port of debris with a soft brush.

My iPhone SE is fairly new (about 3 months) and 2 nights ago, I updated to iOS 14.3. Last night I noticed my charger wasn’t working. I tried plugging it in to different wall receptacles but nothing.

I then plugged it in to my MacBook and it worked fine.

So I googled and found this thread and realized it must be the same thing happening to me (iOS upgrade causing charging issues)

All I thought was...am I going to have to charge this way until Apple fixes it and will it ever be fixed. I can’t carry my laptop around with me.

I was going to call Apple Support this morning but first I tried using a different block (found an old one) with my cord and Voila!!... It worked.

So either my new block just malfunctioned or the iOS upgrade really was at fault but maybe only affects the charging block?

Not sure if this will help anyone but hope so :)
