iOS 14: No longer charging

After upgrading to iOS 14 on my iPhone XS Max, everything seemed to be okay at first, but then tonight the phone decided it had had just about enough of that whole "charging" business. Tried it on multiple devices, across multiple different cables, including plugged into the wall. Tried hard reset. Tried it while the phone was powered off; in doing this, upon plugging in the cable, the phone powers on, so it clearly *recognizes* the cable plugged into it. No indication of even trying to charge, no chime, no green battery, nothing. As a result, it won't show up in iTunes, so I can't make a backup and restore the system to any previous state. Everything else seems to be functioning as it should.

All I can think is, since the unit clearly recognizes cables plugged into it and so the connector is probably functioning, that this is a software issue with iOS. Any thoughts on things to try?

Yes, I can remember you. But your post was deleted by moderators.

I don't have a warranty anymore and I bought my iPhone not at Apple Store. So I don't think they will do that for me.

I was at Apple Store twice. I had no chance there! Also not for just a battery replacement.

But, I have already repaired my iPhone by my self. I’m Engineer and I used to work for big mobilephone repair company in Germany. So I was able to do that. You can find my posts here.

Have a nice day!

Good luck!

My posts are still there. I have 4 posts on the first page of this thread. My iPhone SE was only 7 months old, but it was a replacement (2nd replacement, actually) for an older phone and had no warranty. This new phone that Apple just gave me is the third replacement for a phone I originally bought over three years ago.

One more thing; you are really confused about how the forum works. You don’t get points for posting. You ONLY get points when the original poster in a thread marks your post as Helpful or Solved. And, as you may have noticed, I don’t really need points. Once you get past 8,000 there is no further benefit to accumulating points; everyone over 8,000 is equal in privileges (which aren’t much, BTW). If you look at my points it means that somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 original posters have marked my posts as Helpful (5 points) or Solved (10 points). That’s what I take satisfaction in; the fact that I have helped that many people. Considering that only about 25% of posters reply with Helpful or Solved even when their issue is resolved, my actual numbers are considerably higher than 100,000 points implies. I am truly sorry I couldn’t help you.

It is possible your charging port as some debris in it. Unplug the charger and use a flashlight to see if there is any debris in the charging port. If so, use a soft bristle brush to gently remove the debris from the port. Be careful while using the brush to remove the debris as the pins in the port that connect the lightning connector to the device are fragile. Once the debris has been removed then connect your device to iTunes to see if it recognizes your device.

As I wrote earlier I have had the same issue with my iphone(s). However it seems to be going away. Day by day. I wonder if this has something to do with a charging optimization process that the phone learns overtime with the ios14? I sounds like voodoo, but my phone has started to charge nicely most of the times I plug it in again. And no, it's not debris, I cleaned the charger port first thing, when this charging circus started. And that did not help one bit. Can the problem be part of an optimization algorithm?

No, that was the Out of warranty price...

If under warranty, it would have been free.... But I needed to stop spending hours reseting, deleting, backing up, restoring... Plus the crazy idea that if I left it charging for 3 days... My phone would acquiesce and fix itself... ( I gave it 4 days... It didnt comply).

I poneyed up the money. The turn around time was quick, and the phone came back beautifully cleaned and polished...

So... No regrets...

An unexpected expense, yes... But not terrible... And I've justified it to myself...

Ok. Sorry. You are very experienced user in the community. Please help the people here to make Apple responsible for this problem. They have to know this issue.

I know, that all people who bought the device directly at Apple Store have good chances to get it repaired or replaced after a warranty. But people who bought it in other shops don't have this possibility if the warranty is gone.

Please

I was given the phone by a friend... It needed a screen and since it was used... And being opened up... I had the guy change the battery...,

it was done by a local guy in a repair shop... He used an off brand battery...

So, my point being that Apple will fix the phone anyway.

Perhaps one day they will repay me...

The idea was to give the iphone time to do this voodoo optimization process and to change the battery after that. Because highly likely the batteries are damaged after this update issue. But I'm not sure about it!

I changes the battery (original Battery from other iPhone), but it didn't help. My iPhone switched to 0% battery again and I was not able to charge it.

Later I noticed that it works without the sim cars. So I did factory reset, restored my data and put the phone on power supply without the sim card for day or two. After that I was able to run my iPhone wit the sim card and battery, but with new battery.

I don't know exactly if my old battery was damaged or it have just the voltage level too low. But I'm still not able to charge my old battery.

Are you kidding me? 😅

First:

I wrote it specially in my last post. I don’t mean here the „Battery optimization“

I mean the way the iOS do some work with the data on the phone. You won’t find this optimization in the settings, because this is an internal processes how the operating system operations her data.

Second:

How I can turn this switch off, when my iPhone is dead? I was not able to turn it on.
