iOS 14: No longer charging

After upgrading to iOS 14 on my iPhone XS Max, everything seemed to be okay at first, but then tonight the phone decided it had had just about enough of that whole "charging" business. Tried it on multiple devices, across multiple different cables, including plugged into the wall. Tried hard reset. Tried it while the phone was powered off; in doing this, upon plugging in the cable, the phone powers on, so it clearly *recognizes* the cable plugged into it. No indication of even trying to charge, no chime, no green battery, nothing. As a result, it won't show up in iTunes, so I can't make a backup and restore the system to any previous state. Everything else seems to be functioning as it should.

All I can think is, since the unit clearly recognizes cables plugged into it and so the connector is probably functioning, that this is a software issue with iOS. Any thoughts on things to try?

I had the same issue and thought my phone had broken:( After completely resetting my phone to factory the charging problem has completely disappeared. I'm hoping this will completely fix the issue but it's only been a few hours since my phone has been reset so any thing could go wrong later. Hopefully everything will be okay.

Kind regards

I am certain that the iOS 14 update caused a software problem with the Lightning Port on the iPad. I installed the iOS 14 update on my iPad on October 10th. It was a successful update. That evening I plugged the iPad into the charger. The next morning it was charged to 100%. Later that day I plugged it into the charger. Two things did not happen, first it did not make a tone alert when plugged into the charger and secondly it did not show the charging symbol inside the battery charge level icon. I left it connected to the charger now for over 5 hours and it has gone down from 7% to 3%. This is not a hardware problem with my Apple charger and cable. The iOS 14 update caused Lightning Port to fail. We should all expect Apple to fix this bug as soon as possible as it is affecting many users who in a short time will no longer be able to use their iPad.

iPhone SE on iOS 14.0.1:

i tried something and it works for me. Clearly it’s a software problem

so I connected the charger THEN I turned off my phone to charge it will it’s off (hence illiminating the “software factor” from charging)

wait a couple of minutes then turn on ur iPhone again while connected ... it will continue charging

P.s.: i truned off a setting called optimized battery charging (Settings->battery-> battery health) idk if it’s related but this sequence worked for me

I’ had the same problem and now it is resolved. I took my iPad to an Apple store yesterday. An Apple technician checked the Lightning Port with a small LED flashlight and found a small seed (Yes a small seed!) lodged in the port. He turned the iPad upside down and with a soft bristle brush gently brushed the seed out of the slot for the cable. He connected the iPad to a notebook computer with software on it to detect serial numbers and even though my iPad battery was totally dead the software was able to read the serial number of my iPad. He then plugged my iPad into a charging block and the iPad no longer displayed the graphic message to install a charging cable which meant that now the iPad recognized the charging cable and is able to charge. I took it home and was able to fully charge the iPad. Problem resolved!

IMPORTANT: The Apple tech advised that you should put the device upside down before clearing the port of debris, because the pins that hold the lightning connector point up, when the iPad is in normal orientation and that by turning it upside down the pins will be facing down leaving a clear but tiny horizontal space on the bottom of the port to clear out the debris. In addition he said the pins are very delicate and to be very gentle while clearing the port of debris with a soft brush.

I had posted the orig. question about replacement battery... after trying ALL of the suggestions, I sent my phone to Apple on Friday ( because there were no appointments for a while).

They said tat the charge would be $69 for an “ Apple” battery, But after I shipped it, they wrote me an email that said “or less” depending on their findings.

On Tuesday I got a notice that it was done and being shipped back.

I should get it back today... About 5 days, including a holiday weekend...

I don't know if they are charging me the full amount... And, hopefully, they actually TESTED that the battery does charge...

If it does, we all should stop banging out heads against the wall and let them fix the phones.

I am optimistic... Over all, I read a lot of complaints on this site about Apple...

Admit it... They Do have a **** of a product... Expensive, yes, but still, a pretty cool device, and I do use it a thousand times a day...

I've missed having it more than I will miss the $69...

Fingers crossed... Ill post if it works, and I'll join the grumblers if it doesn't!

Agree, but my charging issue happened the day after I updated to iOS 14. That evening I plugged the charger in and in the morning it was 100% charged. As the day wore on, I plugged my iPad into the charger and it did not recognize the charging cable. I went on this forum and discovered hundreds of us had the identical problem charging their iPad or iPhone after the iOS 14 update. As I had just charged it overnight successfully, the last thing on my mind was a Lightning port that had debris in it and mistakenly assumed the iOS 14 update clobbered my Lightning port.

Cheers

Follow up.. I received my phone back... Did the magical thing that happens when you get a new phone ( put it next to your old phone and it transfers all your stuff)... I ran the phone down to 70%, and plugged in the phone for the night...

Cant say that it wasnt on my mind over night.... But this morning.... Unlike the other 10 tries before... It was charged to 100%!

My original post was one of the very first listing this problem... I had wiped out the phone, and uninstalled updates, etc ( fyi, whenever I reverted to IOS 13, the Phone WOULD charge correctly, just to be screwed up on each IOS 14 Attempt )..

Whatever they did at Apple service fixed me...

The repair receipt said Battery...AND SPEAKER were replaced... ( speaker?).

Bottom line... YES Software... But there must be some battery component... (Speaker??)

Bring your phone to Apple... And argue that the repair/upgrade should be free.... After all, Our time is worth something too... And we have all spent quite a while stressing, fretting and re-installing.

Good luck... I am off to do some emails and update my audiobooks.

Phone fixed... Check....✅

One less stress on my plate.

Wishing you the same...

Thank you for writing it here. This is a good experience. But there are a lot of people they don‘t have warranty or the Face ID is not working, or other things. I send my iPhone to Apple, they told me either they will repair the iPhone completely for 550€ or they will do nothing.

So, for the record:

Apple doesn't replace batteries on defect iPhones. And that is a problem.

Oct 15, 2020 2:26 PM in response to Lawrence Finch

Yeah. I do.

But I think you can't get the point for some reasons. Look, if the Face ID or a microphone, or one button, or something else doesn't work, then I still have a working device for 500$ in my pocket. But if after such update bag my iPhone XS dies, then I have a brick in my pocket. You can sell it for 100$ at eBay.

Difference is 400$ and lost data!

Can you see the difference? 🙈👀

Oct 15, 2020 2:36 PM in response to Lawrence Finch

Actually the Apple have to admit to this problem and repair it for free.

I’m OK with the fact that they doesn’t repair the iPhone partially or doesn’t replace battery. But I’m not OK, if they initiate an issue and won’t repair it for free!

And the same like other user here, I think Apple is big and very good company. And the products are the best. But you can’t just bring raw update, kill thousands devices and stay with that.

And one more thing, please do not write here without a reason. You just do this to collect your community points. And you have no intention of helping the people here.

Sorry, have a nice day! :-)

I'm one of the first to post in this thread. I found this thread so I took my iPhone SE to the local Apple Store and I took my iPad with this thread (and another similar one) bookmarked.

At that stage none of the 'Geniuses' was aware of this issue, and I had to haggle with them, but they *did* eventually replace my phone.

Now there are hundreds of people here with iOS 14 charging issues. Somewhere in the Apple hierarchy is someone who could authorise replacing your battery. I'm not sure how to find them. Good luck.
