iOS 14: No longer charging

After upgrading to iOS 14 on my iPhone XS Max, everything seemed to be okay at first, but then tonight the phone decided it had had just about enough of that whole "charging" business. Tried it on multiple devices, across multiple different cables, including plugged into the wall. Tried hard reset. Tried it while the phone was powered off; in doing this, upon plugging in the cable, the phone powers on, so it clearly *recognizes* the cable plugged into it. No indication of even trying to charge, no chime, no green battery, nothing. As a result, it won't show up in iTunes, so I can't make a backup and restore the system to any previous state. Everything else seems to be functioning as it should.

All I can think is, since the unit clearly recognizes cables plugged into it and so the connector is probably functioning, that this is a software issue with iOS. Any thoughts on things to try?

I’m having this problem right now on my 7 Plus. This has happened to me about 13 times already. What I’ve noticed is that whenever my phone is processing too much like Twitter, discord, YouTube, and some games. It’ll not charge. What I’ve started to do is put my phone on airplane mode, delete all notifications, and close all applications, shut it down then turn it back on, and then I connect to power. It’ll then take a second but it’ll start charging. Definitely a software issue.

I know.

Erroll, if you can get your device to 14.2 (and just consider 2 updates in 1 week...) you'll get your phone back.

I would disregard any interactions with the apple people at the store. They didnt know. I partly wonder if the mess relates to the new M1 chip. Including code to allow the os to run on both processors.

One approach I would suggest to see if you can get your device back up is a hard reset, which Ive had to do before.

Its a little tricky. Read thorough this. Its a certain specific sequence of steps. But you might try it while the phone is plugged in. I would also replace your lightning cable. There are a lot of variables. But its worth a try.

Thank you for posting. I am dealing with somewhat the same issue. I have the new iPhone SE and was charging just fine prior to the update. The only difference is mine starts to charge and then just stops. I am using all apple charging product cables(no aftermarket items). Its very frustrating. I did a full wipe on the phone and restored from backup and still giving me issues. I just wanted to comment in hopes that this gets enough traction for Apple to address because its clearly a problem.

I am certain that the iOS 14 update caused a software problem with the Lightning Port on the iPad. I installed the iOS 14 update on my iPad on October 10th. It was a successful update. That evening I plugged the iPad into the charger. The next morning it was charged to 100%. Later that day I plugged it into the charger. Two things did not happen, first it did not make a tone alert when plugged into the charger and secondly it did not show the charging symbol inside the battery charge level icon. I left it connected to the charger now for over 5 hours and it has gone down from 7% to 3%. This is not a hardware problem with my Apple charger and cable. The iOS 14 update caused Lightning Port to fail. We should all expect Apple to fix this bug as soon as possible as it is affecting many users who in a short time will no longer be able to use their iPad.

I had posted the orig. question about replacement battery... after trying ALL of the suggestions, I sent my phone to Apple on Friday ( because there were no appointments for a while).

They said tat the charge would be $69 for an “ Apple” battery, But after I shipped it, they wrote me an email that said “or less” depending on their findings.

On Tuesday I got a notice that it was done and being shipped back.

I should get it back today... About 5 days, including a holiday weekend...

I don't know if they are charging me the full amount... And, hopefully, they actually TESTED that the battery does charge...

If it does, we all should stop banging out heads against the wall and let them fix the phones.

I am optimistic... Over all, I read a lot of complaints on this site about Apple...

Admit it... They Do have a **** of a product... Expensive, yes, but still, a pretty cool device, and I do use it a thousand times a day...

I've missed having it more than I will miss the $69...

Fingers crossed... Ill post if it works, and I'll join the grumblers if it doesn't!

As I wrote earlier I have had the same issue with my iphone(s). However it seems to be going away. Day by day. I wonder if this has something to do with a charging optimization process that the phone learns overtime with the ios14? I sounds like voodoo, but my phone has started to charge nicely most of the times I plug it in again. And no, it's not debris, I cleaned the charger port first thing, when this charging circus started. And that did not help one bit. Can the problem be part of an optimization algorithm?

Oct 16, 2020 10:45 AM in response to Lawrence Finch

There is no option to turn it off.

If We speak here about optimization work of the iPhone, we don't mean the optimization of the battery. We mean kind of work the CPU does after update the device to new iOS.

Some people report this optimization work affect the battery life time and the heating of the iPhone.

I guess there is the same issue here.

The real effect depends can depend on:

  • How big is the storage of your iPhone
  • How much data you have on it
  • How old is the baytery
  • And other hw indices

Thank you for sharing your experience with the community in regards to the IOS 14 update causing issues with the charging port. I am Also very disappointed with the response you describe from Apple’s Genius Bar representatives diagnostics in regards to your charging port and whether it is a hardware or software issue. At first; yes you have a problem, let’s wipe and reset your device no charge. Secondly; it’s defective hardware, sorry it’s out of warranty so you must pay for a repair. What is Interesting is that now they know exactly what bit of hardware that needs to be repaired. May I suggest that you discuss these contradictions with the manager at your Apple store and ask why you would be responsible for paying for the repair when coincidentally many other Apple customers are having the identical issue with the charging port after the iOS 14 update and that you had zero issues with your device immediately prior to the iOS 14 update.

This is a user forum. This problem is obviously limited to a small number of users and, believe it or not, Apple may be largely unaware of it. If *everyone* in this thread reported their issue to Apple, it might spur some research on their behalf. I was lucky, the Apple Store replaced my phone but, if they hadn't, I wouldn't have given up. There's clearly an issue here. Tell Apple.

Good point. People should do that, too. However, several users here have visited a Genius Bar and been told it's a hardware problem with their phone. That was nearly me. I was one of the first to post in this thread and, as well as my non-charging iPhone SE, I took my iPad with this thread bookmarked to my Genius Bar appointment. Having read the few posts to that time, the Geniuses (it took two) still said my charging port looked corroded ... but they would replace my phone anyway—but they stressed that I was lucky, they wouldn't normally replace a phone in such condition. The phone was only 7 months old and, like everybody else's here, was working fine until the OS update.

I contend that, to this time, this thread has escaped the notice of the Apple support process, Geniuses are unaware of it and people are being dealt with on a case-by-case basis and told their phone or battery is screwed (which it may have been by this OS update).

I mentioned earlier in the thread that the local Apple Store replaced my phone, but before I took it to the store, I managed to get enough charge—2-3%—to do a hard reset. The phone still wouldn't charge. I then managed to erase all settings and content and then start restoring from an iCloud backup, but the phone went back to the black, not-enough-charge-to-do-anything screen during the restore. Some people here haven't been able to power on their phones at all, so a hard reset isn't an option for them.

As someone else pointed out, you will get a more immediate response by clicking 'Get Support' at the top of this page. I encourage everyone here to do so, and start a live chat.

It's significant that your "widespread reporting" is all in the forums on this site. This problem is unknown outside these forums. I haven't found a single reference to it in a tech publication or YouTube channel etc., and as you point out, the iOS updates since 14.0 make no mention of it.
