iOS 14: No longer charging

After upgrading to iOS 14 on my iPhone XS Max, everything seemed to be okay at first, but then tonight the phone decided it had had just about enough of that whole "charging" business. Tried it on multiple devices, across multiple different cables, including plugged into the wall. Tried hard reset. Tried it while the phone was powered off; in doing this, upon plugging in the cable, the phone powers on, so it clearly *recognizes* the cable plugged into it. No indication of even trying to charge, no chime, no green battery, nothing. As a result, it won't show up in iTunes, so I can't make a backup and restore the system to any previous state. Everything else seems to be functioning as it should.

All I can think is, since the unit clearly recognizes cables plugged into it and so the connector is probably functioning, that this is a software issue with iOS. Any thoughts on things to try?

I’m gonna tell you what, and this is my opinion, there have been a lot of people that upgraded to the newer iPhone, but like myself and many others we have the seven and the 8+ and they work fine so like with myself I finally got out of my two-year contract and my phone bill Scott for $150-$90 a month and they’re trying to force you in my opinion to buy a new phone when your battery dies and you can no longer charge it because if they know this is a legitimate problem from everybody complaining they would have an update out there Already either to revert back to the last update or fix this problem so far I’m glad mine is only an issue where I have to leave my vehicle off before I plug in and then start the car everywhere else is charging fine knock on wood

I had this same problem too. There is this new option in "Batteries" in "Settings" called "Optimized Battery Charging", which helps you charge your iPhone routinely (it is set default to "on"). This option learns from how you charge daily, and allows the battery to charge only during those specific periods. Because you just updated to iOS 14, this system may not have learned from your daily charging routine yet. I recommend turning it off now to help you charge your iPhone properly. You can turn it back on later, when it has learned your charging routine, so that it can help to save battery life. You can also leave it off, because it doesn't help too much, and may disrupt your charging when in an emergency.

First try this, if it still doesn't work, try updating your software, sometimes it may fix bugs like this. The newest software is 14.2.

Best of luck! Hope this helps!

I had this same problem a few days ago till someone gave me this advice: There is a new option in "Settings”, in “Batteries" in “Battery Health” called "Optimized Battery Charging", which helps you charge your iPhone routinely (it is set default to "On"). Switch this setting to “Off”. Just know after you turn it off, sometimes it switches back on, so you’ll have to continually check this setting to ensure you can still manually charge your phone without this setting blocking you.

Also make sure your software is updated to IOS 14.2. I hope these suggestions help. Good luck.

Good point. People should do that, too. However, several users here have visited a Genius Bar and been told it's a hardware problem with their phone. That was nearly me. I was one of the first to post in this thread and, as well as my non-charging iPhone SE, I took my iPad with this thread bookmarked to my Genius Bar appointment. Having read the few posts to that time, the Geniuses (it took two) still said my charging port looked corroded ... but they would replace my phone anyway—but they stressed that I was lucky, they wouldn't normally replace a phone in such condition. The phone was only 7 months old and, like everybody else's here, was working fine until the OS update.

I contend that, to this time, this thread has escaped the notice of the Apple support process, Geniuses are unaware of it and people are being dealt with on a case-by-case basis and told their phone or battery is screwed (which it may have been by this OS update).

Where? I've searched on "iPhone not charging iOS14" and all I find is a few threads on theses Apple Discussions, some beta users on Reddit and a bunch of generic "iPhone not charging" fixes. Not one of the tech publications has any mention of charging problems after updating to iOS14. I think it's largely unknown.

This list of iOS14.2 fixes makes zero mention of it. https://screenrant.com/iphone-update-ios-14-2-bug-fixes/

Plus, there's nothing on YouTube.

Apple doesn't want unhappy/angry users. Apple has always gone out of its way to keep me happy. Really, I think if Tim Cook read this thread, he'd be mortified. Someone needs to tell him.

I think Apple knows. I had a support ticket that was created and i probably contacted apple 5 or 6 times. I had to push hard to finally get it escalated. At that point a tech remoted into my phone and DL diagnostic logs for there engineers.

They know

I don't think Tim cook and his billions care. Between this disaster of an update, an well established history of bug ridden IOS updates and Apple not allowing Nvidia to release drivers for my Macbook pro I'm pretty disgusted with apple.
