Touchscreen acting strange after iOS 14 update

I have an iPhone XS Max and I’ve just updated the phone to iOS 14.

Areas of the screen becomes unresponsive many times during the day. Locking the screen and unlocking it again seems to temporarily fix the issue. Removed the screen protector, and restarting the phone doesn’t seem to fix the issue. Updated to iOS 14.1 and the issue remains to emerge every once in a while during the day making it difficult to operate, navigate and especially type on the phone.

I found a fix that might work for others with this issue (especially if typing is the problem). Go into your keyboard settings (settings-general-keyboard) and disable the slide to type function. After disabling that function, my keyboard is no longer the bane of my existence.

This issue had been driving me insane since it makes the phone almost unusable. Hopefully it stays fixed and Apple resolved the issue WHICH IS CLEARLY A SOFTWARE PROBLEM!!!

same here! i’m experiencing exactly the same like yours, in the first week install ios14 it happened quite often (freeze/ghost touch) like every 5-10 minute of usage, and then upgraded to 14.0.1 nothing change. try go to setting and reset All setting, this seems like temporarily fix but it really works for me, my Xs Max very much less freeze than before, still reoccurring sometimes which it takes several hours of usage before it start to freeze again. x

I too, have been having this problem on a new iPhone SE. My issue was/is that my grouped apps were unresponsive to touch. All of my ungrouped apps did not seem to have this issue. Individually, they launched and behaved as I would have expected. BUT.....as soon as I went to IOS 14, the groups became erratic to touch. Hardware problem?????? Right after an IOS upgrade???c'mon Apple, that's crud. Get it together, get out of the space cafeteria and maybe look at some code. Jobs would have found this completely unacceptable and would be screaming in the halls and a few of those desks might be emptied right now, but Apple QC ain't what it used to be.

I tried the solution that MADHOLM suggested (Go into your keyboard settings (settings-general-keyboard) and disable the slide to type function.) and for the moment, that seems to be working. Grouped apps all appear to be responsive. I'll be keeping my eye on this. For now, my phone has returned to acceptable normalcy

I have the same ghost touch inputs since 14.1. same effect like a jumping and clicking mouse cursor in Windows :-(

Swiching of 3D & Haptic Touch helps a lot, but not completely, areas of the screen fade in being responsive after some minutes.

Need to lock/unlock to reactivate touch. Disablling the slide to type function has not effect to me.

poor software quality assurance, thanks for being a beta tester.

I thought it was just me having this problem, I thought I got my phone wet so I put it in a pile of rice for 2 days lol. Turns out it is just a terrible software issue, I’m going to factory reset my phone, if it works I’ll let you guys know. It wasn’t too bad on iOS 14 for me, it would happen occasionally but the second I updated to iOS 14.01, the entire bottom half of my phone became unusable.

The authorised service provider as I mentioned before took the phone from me on October 5th (my phone is no longer covered by warranty too but the iPhone X program is 3 years) and he told me that they would run some tests first he said it was stress tests, and in 5 days he would call me and tell me what’s the issue and to give me details if it’s going to be enrolled into the program or not, he called me the next day telling me that the phone has been fixed and it was enrolled so I went to take it on October 7th.

As far as I can tell, you can take your phone there and they will call you before they fix it if it’s going to cost money, but that might br in rare cases in the iPhone X (like liquid damage and things like that gets you disqualified from the program).

So I hope your phone gets fixed and up and running in no time.

Update....

shipped my phone on Wednesday October 7th, repair (screen replaced) on October 8th and shipped back to me overnight air on October 9th. Received repaired iPhone X on Monday October 12th and with the replaced screen the phone is back to working normal. If you have an X I would certainly contact apple and go this route as it is a free replacement under the ongoing screen replacement program for the X. I would still say the update to iOS14 caused this failure but for me it is fixed. Now just waiting for the new phone to drop so I can purchase it. LOL

Same problem in my 2-year XS Max 512Gb, iOS 14.2 with no problem until yesterday: 1) Ghost keyboard, 2) website in browser seems to be selected and to edit it i have to touch it twice to unselect and make the keyboard appear, 3) unable to enter unlock code (settings > Face ID and Code) as the keyboard doesn't appear.

A detail, if I connect the phone (under recovery mode) to MacMini computer by USB wire, the problem dissapears completely. When I disconnect it, the bug returns again!!

So this is a software issue, not a hardware one!!

I factory resettled it twice and it worked fine for a week ....

I had autocorrection ON in chats or messages after factory reset ... yesterday I turned off the autocorrect and again it was same issue

now I have turned it off again and hard reset it and it’s working fine since morning

hope this works now ....

I recommend switch ON the autocorrection in keyboard settings and it might work for u as well

best of luck
