Orange dot won't turn off on iPhone

Ever since updating my iPhone XR to IOS 14.0.1 the little orange dot signifying that my microphone is on, won’t go off. I’ve tried closing out of all apps, shutting down the phone, turning off the ability to use microphone in all apps but the orange light persists. My next step is to reset the phone but I would rather not do that if I can help it.

I do know. For most of the people who have posted about this and they say they aren't running any apps they come back with they are on the phone. Which is an app and it uses the microphone. And if you open Control Center while the light is showing it will tell you which app is using the the microphone. How is this not knowing?

I have had the same problem. I found you can open the Control Centre when the orange dot appears and it will tell you which app is using the microphone or video whilst in a call or attempting a call. I too had turned off privacy and denied access to all apps before finding the app responsible for the Orange Dot. I found out the orange dot is on when making a phone call because the Phone Application itself is utilising the microphone. It is all a waste of time because the orange dot will Always be on the screen of the Phone App is always utilising the microphone. It’s a shame because people like using Apple products because they are secure and user friendly, but now they are complicating it with android-like interfaces that are complicating things with more choices.. Hope this helped...

Please post a screen shot. There is no yellow dot in any of Apple’s notifications. And the orange dot showing that the microphone is on does not appear in the upper right, it appears over the signal strength bars right next to the Face ID notch.

When SPECIFICALLY do you see the dot? If you press the HOME button do you see it? If you open the Calendar app do you see it? What about the Contacts app? The Settings app? What app is open when you see it?

HPM76 is right. You need to know when you are using your own phone? Really? It is a distracting feature on the phone. It takes your attention away. Im on my phone constantly with meetings, etc.. all day. We should have the option to TURN IT OFFFFFF. They have options for tons of other stuff why not this???? How hard is that.

When I check to see which app is spying it lists phone. Invasion of Privacy Apple!!!

The purpose of the icon is not to determine if someone is spying, it activates when the microphone is in use. The fact the phone is using it supports the fact that you are in a phone call. Now, if it was on and you were not actively using the microphone, i.e. not in a call, or not using any other app using the microphone and Control Center identified an app using it, then you have something to be concerned about. Apple does not record phone calls. As a matter of fact, Apple does not even provide the ability to record phone calls on the iPhone because it is illegal in multiple jurisdictions.

I’ve been looking for the last 2 weeks as I couldn’t understand why mine was on all the time (it really irritated me) and it didn’t show anything on the control centre. I rebooted my phone, denied access to mic on everything and still nothing. Powered down for 5 minutes and still no change. This is probably around the 15th thread I’ve read about this and your comment literally gave me a facepalm moment 🤦🏻‍♀️ It was my wallpaper... Something so simple yet something I’d never even thought about or something anyone else thought to mention. Thank you for relieving my frustration!

The dot has NOTHING TO DO WITH RECORDING. To repeat: The dot has NOTHING TO DO WITH RECORDING. the Orange dot means ONE THING ONLY: It means that the microphone is ON. If you are using a recording app such as Voice Memo then it is obviously recording, and it actually says so right on the screen that it is recording. But if you are on a phone call it is not recording, all the dot means is that the microphone is ON. (And it would be extremely difficult for the person to whom you are talking to hear you if the microphone wasn’t on, unless they were in the same room with you).

Here is Apple’s Help text link for the orange and green dots→About the orange and green indicators in your iPhone status bar - Apple Support. Do you see anything in it about recording?

Face ID does not use the microphone, so there will be no orange dot. Face ID also does not use the camera, so there will be no green dot for Face ID. (Face ID uses an infrared scanner in the notch at the top of the screen.) FaceTime uses the camera, so there will be a green dot if you make a FaceTime call.

inhave Done factory rest and that little dot it’s still there when ever I make call in WhatsApp or any normal call it’s recording the voice

Once again, the orange dot means the microphone is active. In order for you to use any voice call app, the microphone MUST be active.

And, again, the orange dot doe NOT mean anything is being recorded.
