wifi calling ios 14

After updating to ios 14.01 my wifi calling drops out randomly. Happens with airplane mode on and off. Have done a complete restore twice, disable/enable the feature, and hard reboot. My carrier is Verizon. Anyone else having this kind of issue?

I just got off a long chat with Verizon and learned the following. Cutting and pasting what they told me.

This is a known issue. The alert states:

“Some customers with iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, or iPhone 12 Pro Max may be experiencing issues with making or receiving calls on Wi-Fi calling. Users may also experience drop calls with Wi-Fi calling.”

“Apple is currently working on this issue and will be releasing the fix in an upcoming software update, although we don't have an exact date as to when that update will be released. Some routers broadcast both a 5GHz and 2.4GHz signal. The 5GHz connection will be faster but have a shorter range. Have you tried connecting and using wi-fi calling with both of these signals from your router (if available)?”

I've been struggling with this problem for months on both of our iPhones. Apple, please listen....I will also post a link to this in a ticket to them too. My phones both drop WiFI calls frequently. I'm in a pickle because due to a radiant barrier in my house, I get 0 bars of cell service, so WiFi calling is the only thing I can use and I've used it for several years (4+) without too many issues until about 4 months ago. Many times the line seems to go dead and then the call drops, other times the call just drops, and other times I hear the person on the other side but they can no longer hear me....and then the call drops!

Based on a post here I just turned off 5GHz on my router which will "steer" everything on the network to 2.4 GHz including my iDevices that I use for wifi calling. So if handling "switching between 5GHz and 2.4GHz" is the issue then this should be a temporary work around. We'll see. I'm not too hopeful.

BTW, I contacted Spectrum Mobile who sent me Apple Support who sent me to Best Buy who sent me to Spectrum Mobile. The nice thing is that the second Spectrum Mobile associate sent me the link to this thread.

Ever since upgrading to iOS 14 my entire family is having issues with wi-fi calls dropping with full wi-fi signal. This includes an iPhone X, a XS, and the one listed above (which replaced another X). Spent 30 minutes on support with Verizon as they did "things" on their end (I have no clue what exactly). I rebooted my phone multiple times, turned the feature off/on, went into my emergency address to verify it is accurate and accept the EULA there. The "VZW Wi-Fi" appears in the top left corner, but it takes 5+ minutes after rebooting the phone. The call quality is apparently perfectly fine based off of what people I've been in meetings say, but the call will simply drop without warning (eg - call quality doesn't degrade). The drops do seem to correlate with a full loss of cellular signal.

Same things happens to me. 12Pro. When I first received the phone, it worked fine. Updated the software started dropping calls when using wifi calling. Got on the phone with Verizon. They tried a few things, with no luck. They sent me a new phone. Worked great out of the box. No dropped calls using wifi calling. Got notice of software update to 14.3. Went ahead and updated. (my new phone came with 14.2.? I think ) after the update to 14.3 started dropping calls using Wifi. So I am not sure if it is the software or the update process. Remember my new phone came with the same software I update my 1st phone to. The replacement phone worked fine until I update it to 14.3. Spoke to Apple. They said that dropping calls using Wifi calling has been reported by many customers. They have no fix as of today, 12/17/2020

Also, to address the quoted section below in Spain's post, my routing system does use both 2.4 and 5 ghz bands, and does not let me select one or the other. So Apple's suggestion of being able to use both signals does not work.

Apple is currently working on this issue and will be releasing the fix in an upcoming software update, although we don't have an exact date as to when that update will be released. Some routers broadcast both a 5GHz and 2.4GHz signal. The 5GHz connection will be faster but have a shorter range. Have you tried connecting and using wi-fi calling with both of these signals from your router (if available)?”

You all may already know this but you can have WiFi calling enabled but you may not actually be calling over WiFi.

Since I’m on Verizon I know I’m on WiFi calling only when in the upper left it states “VZW Wi-Fi” in the status bar in upper left of screen. When I’ve tried calling with that status and get disconnected my phone most of the time automatically switches from “VZW Wi-Fi” to “Verizon” even with WiFi calling still enabled. If “Verizon” is showing I won’t be disconnected from calls and I’m assuming I’m not really WiFi calling at that point.

Upon reading this forum, I can say that I am having the exact same problems as everybody here. I am on the Verizon network with an iPhone 12. I actually bought the new iPhone 12 to see if it would remedy the problem with Wi-Fi calling dropped calls. Been having this issue in our household for four months. Calls dropping constantly at about three minutes without warning and have to call directly back while the Wi-Fi is still in full connection. Extremely frustrating. Can’t run business at home like this. Verizon says it is not their network. Xfinity Comcast says that it is not their network. Done countless hours of investigation with all companies. Apple has no solution other than restarting the phone etc. which I have done countless times to no avail. My office connects directly to the router with no mesh network. In the house we have a different router with a mesh network. My wife and I both have the same phone and they both drop calls on Wi-Fi weather in my office or in the house. I believe this is an apple iOS issue that they desperately need to resolve. We are going to be forced to go to another phone carrier soon. Please update this forum if anybody has found a solution to this.

For the ones that are not having an restricted cellular connection, Turn Off your WiFi Calling function.

People that turn on airplane mode, don't. Airplane mode = a setting on smartphones and portable computers that disables its wireless signal transmissions. ALL signal transmissions such as bluetooth, wifi, cellular. (They can be reenabled, of course)

My wife and I both have this issue with our new iPhone 11 phones. We both updated our phones from our backups, but why would we need to restore a brand new phone first and then restore again from our backup? How would this impact the ability of the phone to do WiFi calling? Had no issue with our iPhone 6 and 6+. If Apple allows us to update our new phones from a backup, it should not impact other things like WiFi calling.

Based on the prevalence of the issue and the fact it appears to be happening on multiple carriers, I took think it is most likely an iOS 14 issue.

Have an iphone 7+ with 14.3 and the issue is horrible. Have aruba wireless environment and have tried one ap / multiple aps as well as 5.ghz only and the problem is terrible. Honestly i thought it was my wifi but the problem started with the ios14 update. ios13 was just fine. I feel the problem comes in when it switches from wifi calling to cell. We are on the edge here with verizon and sometimes its on VZW-WIFI and others its on verizon cell it bounces alot more since the ios14 update.

Really need some help from apple on this.
