iPhone 12 Pro charging slowly with Magsafe charger

I bought the MagSafe charger with the 20w brick this week and have been used to charging the iPhone XS, it’s noticeably slower as usual since it’s not compatible.

But my iphone 12 pro arrived today and added my MagSafe clear case and have been using the MagSafe charger with the 20w. It was a 61% battery right at 4:00pm, when I checked at 4:30, it was sitting a 64%. I thought it was supposed to 15w superfast charge, am I missing something? Is it a Hardware defect, is it the MagSafe case? If i use my 20w usbc to usb lightning it would have been at 90% within that time frame, maybe my expectations were high, but even then the phone feels super hot to touch.

Everything’s apple branded.

So to recap Iphone 12 pro, with apple MagSafe clear case, with the MagSafe clear charger for the 12 pro and the newly released 20w power adapter. I used all of these and have noticed it’s still slow, ****, my Apple Watch series 6 reached a 100% before the phone did.

Just left the Apple Store at Marina Bay. The Genius did a thorough check to my 12 pro and tried another MagSafe charger. It charged normally. So the outcome is the MagSafe charger I have is a defective unit. I've applied for a refund.

I would suggest anyone who has this issue to visit Apple Store, or just get a refund or exchange with the MagSafe charger.

I Finally came to that conclusion yesterday when I found the apple article regarding fast charging their iphones. This finally hit the nail in the coffin on the magsafe accessory because at the end of the day it’s still slower than charging it with a 20w brick and usb c to lighting cable despite the battery optimization feature.

No matter how much I tried to combine the two, magsafe charger was always pulling behind and finally when I read Apple’s claim that the Magsafe charger only outputs 15w from 0-50% battery in 30 minutes and slow charges your phone after that I finally realized that I’ll just stick to wired charging. I expect the charger to output 15w no matter what but I did not know it was that restrictive and that doesn’t sit well with me, **** my AirPods Pro case was super hot after just leaving it charge for like 10 minutes.

Thanks for your help and helping me decide to finally just return the charger. Magsafe 1.0 is just not for me.

Note whether you are meeting all the requirements for faster MagSafe charging:

Compatible power adapters for up to 15W faster wireless charging

USB-C connector. USB-A is not supported
9V/2.22A or 9V/2.56A and higher
iPhone 12 mini can get up to 12W for faster wireless charging with at least 9V/2.03A
Higher wattage adapters at or above 9V/2.56A will also deliver a maximum of up to 15W peak power to iPhone 12*

When Lightning accessories such as headphones are connected, charging is limited to 7.5W to comply with regulatory standards.

* The MagSafe Charger will also function with power adapters that provide a minimum 12W (5V/2.4A) of power, but this will result in slower charging.

I totally agree. I have the new 12 Pro & have the Magsafe charger. With the X & 11 Pro I use the Mophie wireless charger when at the office. Of course I'm using it as well with the new phone & case & it's absolutely awful for charging now. I can't believe how slow it is. I'm going to do it without the case & see if it's the case that's the problem. Please someone give me their feedback. Avid Apple guy here. Thanks.

It’s not your case, the case acts as a pass through, I was going nuts troubleshooting to see if it’s the case, that’s the thing with new tech you don’t know if it’s the 20w adapter, the magsafe charger or simply the phone itself.

I troubleshooted everything in all sorts of combination, it all boils down to the magsafe charger itself. The 20w brick does it job, the magsafe is sporadic it will fast charge one time or it wouldn’t at random times, given that notion after living with it for two weeks giving it all the chances I could, it was still slow charging despite the “24 hour” period...

As I look at my message again I meant I have the Magsafe clear case & it’s not charging on my Qi charger & they both run hot. I took the case off & the charging is much faster & doesn’t run hot. Granted I know plugging it in is the best case scenario but at my office I use the wireless charger because it sits on my desk. So it’s the Magsafe case that’s the problem IMO. Wondering will Apple do anything regarding this. I bought the Apple case from my Verizon account though.

Please help.
