iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

The problem is that when the faulty device has been sent to be examined by Apple (twice!), they claim they’ve been unable to replicate the issues. This is probably because the more serious issues happen when using the device with a SIM card inserted (also when just using 4G) and not really when you only connect to wifi without using the cellular network. I don’t think they test the device using a SIM card. If they did, wouldn’t the issues be obvious? And yes, I have replaced my old SIM card with a brand new one and paid my mobile network carrier more than 50 euros for discussing the issues of my iPhone 12 Pro device with the carriers engineers (as adviced by Apple Support, as they blamed the SIM card for the issues). Replacing the SIM card made no difference, the problems with the device still persist. My mobile network coverage in this are is also excellent, so the problems are not related to that.

So, Apple Support now claims there’s nothing wrong with the device, even though they’ve been suggesting all sorts of tricks to fix these issues for almost four months. It was a shock to first be promised that they’ll fix it, then told twice that they’ll replace it because they could not fix it, but then after all this time of back-and-forth, to be told that they’re not going to take any responsibility or do anything at all about this.

Also, updating to iOS 14.5.1 did not help either.

Has anyone actually had their iPhone 12 (Pro/Pro Max) repaired or replaced by Apple?

If yes, what did they say was causing the issues and malfunction of the device?

The main issues I’m referring to is the significant overheating of the device, dimming down of the screen due to the overheating, shutting down functiona like the camera flash and torch, freezing and being unresponsive until the battery runs out and the device is recharged and restarted, and also other minor malfunctions.

So apperently even if it relevant to the feedback you are not allowed to mention up comming versions that not released yet are giving better preformance and reduce heat production. Not mention moderators removed to much info of my post.

so here info that got removed to much.

“I did not went to apple store or got a replacement unit so it seem to me it was horrible software issue. Ofcourse some apps got updated a few times but Sygic wich was heat issue for long time did not got an update for 2 months.

either ios 14 has been **** till 14.5 and they finally fixing it or maybe it was a other app running caused the issues. But ios seem to be biggest problem for me.

happy they fixed it better late then never”

I’ve been having the problem of my iPhone 12 Pro Max getting super hot to where the screen darkens to the pint I can’t read it,

Never had this happen on any of my previous iPhones over the years.

The most recent incident. I was outside, 71 degrees, taking a few short videos (about 5-10 seconds each). Nothing else running. And the sun was out. :-). I have my phone in a black leather apple case.

The phone got real hot (even the case got hot) and the screen dimmed to where I could read it. I shut the phone down, but it didn’t seem to be cooling off. I restarted the phone and for some reason that’s when it cooled off

After taking some more videos, the same thing happened again. Took the case off and that didn’t change the results.

I’ve never had this happen when the sun wasn’t shining. if we’re not supposed to use these phones when the sun is out, Apple should make that clear so that we know that before purchase.

5G uses a lot of power - there is no way around it, though your battery should last longer than an hour.

The same is true for any 5G device, Apple or Android.

Here's Samsung's explanation:

Verizon once tweeted you should shut off 5G to save power but deleted it:

Good Afternoon Forum,

So I have had my iPhone 12 Pro Max for about 6 days. I am having the same problem with the over heating situation, so much that if it is just sitting on a table, no case, no apps running, not charging it will still shut down and give me “the temperature is to hot cool down the phone to continue using it” information. I have owned pretty much every iPhone since the original, at least one of each generation and I have never had this problem before, I live in an area with almost no 5G so that can not be the problem and my house stays around 67-68 degrees. So it’s not because my house is a sauna. I have started having to make sure that I only charge it for 5-10 minutes at a time with it sitting in front of my vent blowing cold air on it. When I use it for my directions in the car, because of the overheating problem I purchased a vent clip one touch iOtties charging doc. And have my just vents blowing 60 degrees AC air on to it so that I can make it to my destination. Since doing this over the last 72 hours I have only had it over heat once, and it is currently extremely hot and getting hotter as I type this post. I am unsure what the issue is, but I am praying that it can be fixed especially for those of us experiencing the issue with out $700 plus dollars going down the drain. Apple, Please let us know what we can do to help or tell us to come see you even to assess the problem.

I would like to add that even after purchasing 2 separate cases for my phone to protect it, I have resorted to no case, and almost never having a full charge.

This is getting worse for me. Had my 12 pro on the dash with waze it was completely cloudy and rainy and zero sun, a/c in the car at 73. The screen dimmed to 50% and the phone was really hot. I suspect this gets worse when you are charging the phone which I was doing.

I can’t imagine better conditions for a phone really, I hate to pamper this phone. I just want to be able to use my $1000 phone like any other $600 phone I’ve ever owned. Report this to apple people! Use to wit feedback link on home page. Do it!!!

I think this is an issue with the iPhone 12 series. Remember I had my unit replaced just a month ago, right? Well, it’s not that bad like before but I still need to remove the casing every now and then whenever I use an app that consumes memory (I’m guessing it has to do with that, idrk) like heavy games and stuff.

What I usually do is that I restart the phone and wait for a couple of minutes before using it again (without the casing).
