iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

Hey everyone i bought a iphone 11 when i played cod mobile my phone used to heat up like a heater, i deleted the game now the phones just fine! To fix this issue. Head over to settings >> scroll down find battery >> press it and see which app is using more battery ! And if its a built in app then just reset the settings. If its a downloaded app delete the app and reset the settings and re download it again ( reset settings wont delete personal files just walpaper applied to ur phone amd wifi passwords thats all) this worked for mine !

I have the same issue with overheating. The screen will dim if I’m gaming but I don’t mind that. It’s the flicker that gets me. I’ve turned off background app refresh and I tend to clear other apps when I’m gaming. This has never happened when I’m using the 11 pro max. And yes, battery life is not like what Apple claimed. I will always have my charger near when I’m at work. Something that I never have to worry before on previous models. Now I have to charge at around 4 or 5pm latest. If not I’ll have around 8% by 7pm and that is not ideal when I’m still outside.

3rd time posting and 3rd time getting in touch with support. Now they ran diagnostics and battery check and found “no” issues but they know there are issues bc before, they wouldn’t even do that.

Now they asked if the phone was LEAKING FLUID or IT LOOKED SWOLLEN!!?!

Very very concerning and I jokingly said, I’ll let you know if it catches fire and they said please tell them right away if that happens.

hope this 12pro isn’t going to be Samsung type of recall with this. Powering down and rebooting helped a little but even typing this with nothing else running, the phone is warming up!

Me too,

it heats up when using 5G, it keeps switching between 4G and 5G, I suppose depending on the coverage. When we are in 5G coverage it really heats up, with 4G not much so.

I am now using 5G for google maps, it has started heating up!

What is the problem? Has apple addressed the issue? Anybody aware of any communication from Apple?

Have to agree.

It’s is clear as a day we pay more for less.

I don’t see any upgrade experience form my iPhone X, and no better camera isn’t worth new phone for $1400

the battery is draining faster before all the heat issues, Apple do claim it is good for 17 hours vs 18 on the 11 pro., so it’s def less.

on the 5G complete gimmick, doesn’t work well even when “connected” had to turn it off today so I can Los a video with the LTE.

so def don’t need that feature, not worth the extra heat and extra battery eating.

most people won’t need it at all.

today I used my car witless charging the phone got so hot to the point I couldn’t hold it, and the pgone was lagging on every action, like 1 second delay.

def sending it back and saving my money, will try to get a new 11 or even a Xs, will save money and get a better lasting phone.

what a shame on apple side, never in a million years I throughly I will return a phone to Apple abs get an older mode, yes it is that bad.

I’m no expert but - in my case my photos background task is done and my phone is no longer getting hot under load.

FWIW I’ve had every new phone for a while and for as long as I can remember they’ve caned the battery & got hot in their first few days. 99% sure it’s just background hard work.

Heat diffusion on the 12 is just maybe a bit different with different materials / form factor.

I just bought the iPhone 12 yesterday and purchased the new charger to go with it. I’m having the same issue. The phone gets extremely hot and I’m concerned it could cause damage.

If the phone doesn't shut down, it hasn't become "too hot," so don't worry about it.

The phones have temperature sensors inside, so no matter what you may think is "too hot," it will display a message if it really does get too hot:

oftentimes - but not always - it's the photos app/background processes (on Mac, iPad, and iPhone).

There's a ton going on.

But it shouldn't be that big of a thing - I can actually feel my 11 Pro heat through a case, which I did not previously. Background refresh off. No difference on cellular/LTE or WiFi.

Battery usage shows nothing unusual; just normal apps. I don't have social apps - FB, IG, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc. - because those have high activity on the server side.

Could it be the MagSafe charger? I have iPhone 12 Pro Max and no overheating. But while waiting for phone to arrive, I used wireless charger on iPhone X. Spec says you can do use it so gave it a go. Before using MagSafe charger the X had no overheating problems. After using I had overheating when using MagSafe, when using wall charger and sometimes when not charging. Have not used MagSafe charger on new phone!

I have been experiencing the same issue with my iPhone 12 Pro Max. I had it delivered to my home and it came in on the 13th, I have only had the phone for 5 days and for it be overheating to this extent definitely brought upon concern. I am using this phone to the same extent I had been with my previous model, the iPhone XR, and that model rarely overheating. Only when I was on FaceTime for extended periods of time. Speaking of FaceTime, my front facing camera has been lagging. I also noticed that when in the camera app it says my phone must cool down before I can use flash. I have been using the charging wire that came with the phone and bought the Apple USB-C 20W Power Adapter to ensure that it is properly charging, I have yet to receive the MagSafe charger in the mail yet. I have no idea if this is a software or hardware issue, or even something relating to the mmWave antenna for 5G. I hope Apple figures this out soon

Please don’t assume to know what we have a d haven’t done. I have all background refresh on all but the two apps I have to use for work. I know which app is using the most data. It’s my maps. I took Waze off because it’s not an iphone app but it’s never not worked before. Most of us are not idiots and have had phones before. The phone should be able to have an app or two running in the background. It also helps to turn off 5g (but like wtf...why should we have to?). It also helps to be on WiFi (but why should we HAVE to?). If this phone is supposed to be an improvement then we should have been able to go about business as usual. This is not the case and it seems like Apple needs to post up and do right. These phones aren’t cheap

Hello everyone.  I’m loyal to Apple.   I’ve used an iPhones for many years.  Since I got a new iPhone 12 Pro Max, yes for almost every day I have experienced an overheating.

So I was on chat with Apple Support.  One adviser say the SAME about the overheating issue!  They suggests me to see how it goes in next few days as it’s still brand new.   I am not sure if I agree because it never happened when I get a new iPhone 11 Pro Max last year.
