iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

Hello, I just bought an iPhone 12 today and I seem to be having the same issues. I began using the phone right away after it was set up, to download apps and make it more personalized as we all do, but I did experience it heating up right away, and extremely hot as well. This got me worried which led me to researching and it brought me here. Please let me know if you find a solution! That was too much money to spend on something that overheats in just a few minutes.

Mine delivered a few days ago is overheating whilst recharging

Then you are saying your phone is displaying the Temperature Warning while charging? If that is the case, then you should take it to Apple for evaluation. If it is not, your phone is NOT overheating. It is doing what batteries do when being charged and that is get warm. Depending on whether you are fast charging or using a slow charge will also directly influence how warm it gets. If you use a 20W charger, it will get warmer. If you use 5W or 7.5W it will be less warm.

People on this thread are being scared about something which is normal. Especially with brand new phones. Over the first couple days, when a phone is set up from a backup, it takes hours to days to index all the data. That process causes heat as the battery and processor is working hard during that period.

I also see people saying they set up their phone and immediately start watching videos or playing graphic intensive games. This on top of the phone indexing the data will cause the battery to get very warm.

I've been in touch with apple support who were very helpful. A new software update was applied on Thursday and the problem has gone away. I am now using software version 14.2.

As far as the comment above about it taking hours or days to index data and this is a cause for the overheating. Not sure I agree with that, I would suggest there is something wrong with the indexing code if that were the case.

Anyhow 14.2 appears to have fixed the issue, all my data is there and the phone runs as it should and feels cold to the touch.

That's OK.......You don't have to agree with me. But it is fact that lot's of data requires all the data to re-index to a new device. if someone for example has thousands and thousands of photos, it can take hours to a couple days for all that data to be properly indexed. And that requires the battery to be used a lot. It's been this way since the beginning of iPhone and iOS. But it doesn't matter to me if you agree or not.

I just purchased my iPhone 12 pro max, set up done , iCloud done all done . It heats up at the right hand top side of the phone ‘s back side .

very unusual heating . If camera is on then it heats up more . I just scheduled a calm with apple care , if this is really an issue with iPhone 12 , they fix it ASAP through software update or give me a good phone . If this issue is like the Canon r5 heating which is a failure then . IPhone should take back and give me a new phone .

Hi, I visited this forum for the exact same reason as the problem posted a couple of days ago because my iPhone 12 was overheating and the battery was draining at the same speed as my iPhone 8 which was 2 years old. Turns out it was due to the new phone not being updated to the latest iOS version, my phone was brand new and I assumed it would automatically have the latest operating system installed, it didn't. Update your phone to the latest iOS as it fixes some major battery issues and also go to mobile data setting and (if you don't need it) switch off the option for you phone to search for 5G. Even without a 5G contract the phone will still search for 5G internet and this drains the battery an insane amount. Since updating my phone and switching off 5G my battery has been perfect, barely dropping even with heavy use. Hope this helps.

I have been having the same issues! I just got my new 12 pro yesterday and have already been noticing the overheating and the battery life is not as good as they usually are when they first come out. My sister who also got a 12 pro a week ago is having similar issues. Mine was overheating today when it was plugged into CarPlay, while I was on snapchat, instagram, Facebook etc. Like you said, it's minimal usage that is causing the overheating. I'm just waiting for them to send a recall and a new phone lol. Hopefully this gets resolved quickly because mine heats up in a matter of minutes to where it is very noticeable and almost alarming. Mine doesn't even get hot when it's charging so I don't know what the issue could be.

I’m on my third day with the 12 Pro Max and outside of wireless charging using Apple’s MagSafe charger, noticed no excess heat... until today. It’s not on a charger, just playing streaming video over wifi and it’s definitely quite warm. I wouldn’t call this overheating but it’s definitely noticeable when I pick up the phone.

It seems the new A14 chip runs a bit warm when the phone is performing certain tasks. In my case, video streaming. What’s interesting is that I didn’t notice this until today. It may have happened when watching video yesterday but for some reason, I didn’t notice. The only real difference today is that I switched to 4G only so that I could test battery performance differences.
