iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

It seems to me to be a battery issue. I’m having the same issue. I’ve had the phone since March and this started out of the blue beginning of the week. Within a minute of use it’s very hot. No changes have been made as far as different chargers, No new apps. Battery seems to drain quickly. I’m concerned it’s going to catch on fire. Maybe Apple will take this seriously and address this issue as a flaw on their end

So yea then it’s just the CPU overheating. i mean shoot I am a chip designer myself ha ha

on top of my head the only quick fix would be lowering the frequencies during the multicore operations

maybe lowering the background process core frequency dynamically if they have to adjust the frequencies on the fly.

if not, they would just have to slow the chip down completely

I have literally just taken my brand new iPhone 12 Pro 256gb handset out of it's box, turned it on and begun set up. I got to the stage where I'm adding my debit card to my wallet via scanning the card with the camera. It was on the camera scan part for a minute maybe two at most whilst I got my real life purse and my card. In that time the handset became extremely hot to the touch on the rear, and I mean extremely hot! I'd never felt anything like it in my 20 years of owning mobile phones!

Once I'd finished adding my card via the camera scan and progressed to the final stages of installing my apps from an iCloud back up it started to cool down again although there is still a spot near the back camera that is warmer than the rest of the rear.

I'd like to add that the handset hasn't even been plugged in to a charger yet and it's running on iOS 14.1 straight from the box.

This has made me a little tentative as this handset is supposed to be for my daughter....

I'm going to keep an eye on this to see if it becomes an issue.

My iPhone 12 is getting way too hot at the rear and sides. Using it in exactly the same way as my previous 7-8 iPhones but this is not right. It’s too hot and had to turn it off to cool down.

Did it say it had to cool down?

If not, it didn't get "too hot."

It doesn't matter what any prior iPhone you've owned did, if the phone gets too hot, it will tell you and will shut down, otherwise it's performing normally.

O2 UK mobile phone provider not much help, return the phone and we will send out a new one, not really A. going to know when it will arrive as have no phone B. unable to transfer Bluetooth way to the new device & C. some apps like banking need the old phone so can scan QR code to login to new phone banking app.

The phone randomly overheats it is really hard to pin it down, can play a football game on the phone not an issue, use it for bit of emails, social media, app banking etc, could cook a steak on it

Your explanation would be correct except it doesn’t happen on the 8, 10 and 11 same usage same apps.

Using my camera for exactly 1 minute and the middle upper side of the phone is really hot.
yesterday had a video chat, couldn’t touch the phone, maybe it’s the same heat generating inside but the new design more “metallic” passing the heat outside higher?

And why would so many people comment here on a product they clearly wanted and were loyal to in the last 10 years?

I personally returning it, for many other reasons, it’s jus to not worth the hype anymore, really not.

There's no magic code to make a phone heat with just the iPhone 7 and 12.

Certainly a metal case may transmit heat better than plastic or glass would, but despite your comments there's never any danger from the amount of heat generated or the phone would shut itself off.

It's too bad you don't like your iPhone 12, for whatever reasons you don't, but that's precisely why Apple offers a 14 day return period, no harm done.

Best of luck with whichever other device you choose.

apple support said the diagnostic is fine, and I can return or replace the phone, so the phone works the way it was designed to...

and I did all the troubleshooting you mentioned as well before I called Apple.

it’s just how it is, doesn’t fell right, maybe you like it, I personally think it’s design flaw.

Ans was really waiting for this model, and loved the fact they want back to this design, but now I realize it’s less comfortable in my hand (slippery), and seems to be transmitting way more heat.

Along with other issues, it’s just not worth the price that’s all.

by the way the phone may not shut down cause it’s too hot but it does get into that lagging mode they scrubbing through and closing opening apps are a bit in delay.

Not hating on Apple, I will just go with older cheaper model without all the gimmick features which I personally do t need (5G, better camera and HDR ... )
