iPhone 12 Pro Overheating

Haven’t seen much on this yet and was curious if anyone out there with either an iPhone 12 or 12 Pro is experiencing any overheating issues. I had major overheating problems while setting up the iPhone which isn’t too out of the norm. However the overheating issues have seemed to persist since getting the phone set up. The backup is fully restored so there shouldn’t be much background activity occurring. I’m also experiencing abysmal battery life as well, along side the drastic overheating. I do tend to favor 5G On over 5G Auto as I live in an area with a pretty expansive sub6 5G network. But either way the phone is still prone to overheat under minimal load. I also have been experiencing an occasional flicker on the screen which is something I haven’t seen on any apple oled panels before. Like I said I haven’t seen many forums or posts anywhere about this issue so thought I would reach out to the community and see if anyone is experiencing anything similar!

But only using one app for less than 15 minutes (e.g. reading the news) and the device overheating to the point that it’s too hot to touch is not normal. I have been told borh by the reaeller and Apple Support that this device needs to be repaired. I suggest everyone who experience inreasonable overheating woth their iPhone 12 Pro return it to be repaired or replaced. This is surely a manufacturing error, something’s wrong with a batch of devices.

yes me too. i got the iphone 12 and it had major overheating issues whilst setting up and has continued to even if i’m just scrolling on facebook or reading emails. not to mention when playing games, which i guess can be expected, but they’re just simple games like subway surfers and among us. my battery life is also quite bad, and i don’t even use 5g. it’s fine when at 100 but dropped by at least 8% in 15 minutes of light use. i’m quite disappointed as i thought it was meant to be good in terms of overheating and battery life but oh well.

I have had the 12 pro for almost

2 weeks and mostly love it. It was glitchy at first when transferring from my 8 and it dropped several messages and calls. Now for 3 days it is randomly reading that it is too hot and shuts down. It does not feel hot. It feels as if I have a lemon but I dread going through trying to get it replaced. I am a nurse and rely heavily on my phone when I am on call. I have never had a problem like this and I started with the original iPhone.

I called customer support and they told mento update. It didnt work. Then I called again and we did the whole icloud backup and then reset the phone to new factory settings at believe it or not, it worked! Hasnt heated up to where I am worried, just a normal warmth while using it in excess. I recommend calling customer supprt and getting a case number and have them follow you through the process. My phone was only 18 days old.

Check out the Communities discussion "iPhone 12 screen brightness issue". -- Its a known problem that the 12's overheat and screens dim to black -- to the point you cant see what's on the screen - and this is with normal use (not left in sun or on dash). I placed an oral thermometer on my phone and it was heated to 106 degrees... Far from "normal" and the screen goes black within a few minutes of warm ambient temperature-- . I went to Best Buy's Apple technician - they replaced the display, did a restart, closed all the apps, but nothing changed -- They have now ordered a replacement, but the feed back I'm finding says it is likely to get the same bad results.

My IPhone 12 max overheats so much that some times it displays the temperature screen.

I went to the Apple Store and they confirmed the heating warning on the system, but said that “if I want” they could butcher the phone open and replace essentially everything in it. And I could happily live with a butchered phone. That is paying the apple care+. Since I had the phone for a month at the time, I decided not too.

the phone continue overheating… specially with wireless charging. Other funny thing is that they still ask if you use original chargers at the store… the invisible one? Or the 5 watts with usbA not C? Very disappointed with this device, if I could I would return it.

I received my new 12 Pro Max a couple months ago. Solid 48 hours of battery life with quite a lot of use. Two days ago when I took it off the charger it was extremely hot. Restarted phone and overheating went away. Now I am lucky to get 12-14 hours of intermittent use. Very disappointed. No factory charger, and the one I’ve been using maxes at 5 watts. Not happy with this.

What's the temperature when this occurs?

The iPhone 12 Pro Max is designed to operate in temperatures of 32° to 95° F (0° to 35° C).

So are the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra and Google Pixel 5.

The documentation for the Pixel 5 also explicitly states:

Use of your Pixel 5 in certain modes, such as gaming, taking videos, using a flashlight setting, or VR, can cause it to generate more heat than it would under normal operating conditions. This may cause your Pixel 5 to operate in a reduced-power mode or temporarily shut down. Use extra care when operating the device in these modes.

I can certainly understand how, with you just joining in on this thread, you are seeing lots of complaints and griping -- and your suggestions certainly are the right approach. Many/most of us that have become frustrated have done the troubleshooting efforts you suggested. Many trips to my carrier, seeking help from Apple directly, having diagnostics run by Apple, getting replacement phones that still overheat and dim, turning off 5G, turning off apps, having the display adjusted, (all things that Apple has suggested), but the problem of overheating and screen dimming and eventual shut-down continues and is the frustration you are seeing here in this forum. Apple's response is that this is a protection to the phone during adverse conditions. The frustration from me and others on this discussion is that we have paid a lot of money for a superior phone and camera, and it does not perform (or in many cases cannot even be used) in temps above 90 or in direct light. It seems the solution rests on Apple, but to date, it has not been presented. I've been an Apple user for over 20 years, but have become frustrated on the issues on the 12. Apple has not let us down in the past, so hopefully they will announce a "fix" to resolve the frustrating performance of the 12. And just to be clear, most of us DID contact Apple first, before we looked at this forum for a solution.
