iPhone 12 Pro Wireless Charging Issues

I picked up the iPhone 12 Pro yesterday, and I can't get wireless charging to work properly. I have two Qi charging pads, both from different manufactures, and the 12 pro will only charge from them if it's been freshly rebooted. If I take the phone off the pad, and then place it back on the pad, it will not charge again unless I reboot the phone. The pads charge my Xs and my Galaxy S9, so they're not the problem. Anybody else having issues with wireless charging on the 12 pro?

I love it when someone who recently joined the forum with 4 points, tells someone who has been on the forum for over a decade and knows the forum managers personally, what Apple does or doesn't do here.

You are wrong. The people you hope are reading your posts are NOT here. If you want to tell Apple your thoughts where it will be heard you should do one or more of the following:

  1. Provide feedback via this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Call Apple
  3. Use the Contact Support button at the top of this page
  4. Schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and show them the issue you're having

Otherwise, it is you who is wrong about Apple paying attention here.

I was the second poster of this thread and have an outcome. Two consecutive mornings after my post, I had to restart the phone to get the detection to work. Then, it magically worked for 8-ish days. I upgraded to 14.2 and it worked. Then, 15 days from buying the phone, it started again and I went to a Verizon store. They verified the problem and sent me a like-new-certified replacement under warrantee. I have not had this problem on the "new" phone and it does not show any signs of the same defect.

Before Verizon, I spoke with Apple. Their L2/L3 fact gathering people are working on this issue, as they continue with callbacks. I give them credit for chasing it which makes me believe they are well aware of these reports.

Update .. I am on my 3rd iPhone pro 12

they all work fine on my bedside wireless charger but in my 2020 suv that has a built in 15watt charging pad the phones either do nothing or go on for a minute then nothing again.

yes restart makes it work again for a short period of time. I have tried the the vol up and down reset, I’ve tried network settings also the battery optimization off. Nothing works consistent.

I have talked to apple they didn’t seem to have any info on the problem. But that was 2 weeks ago maybe there has been progress made. I ask everyone to call apple speak to a tech and report back findings. Since I have success with one charger and this is the 3rd phone I’m gonna say a software issue or configuration of preferences problem.

I can’t replace the built in QI charger in my car. The charger works for every other wireless charging phones that I have tested, XR, 11, Google Pixel 4 and 5 and Several Samsung phones. Only issue is the iPhone 12 that will work sometimes but only for a few minutes.... It is a design flaw in the phone - hopefully that can be fixed in software. Please, can everybody log a ticket on Apple support- complaining here is of little or no use.

I am having the same problem as the other iPhone 12 users. the wireless charging suddenly stopped working on all of my wireless charging pads, but the pads charged other devices. Then I rebooted the phone and it worked again.

Additional Note: This did not happen to me until yesterday. I don't know if it is a coincidence or not but I received an official apple mag-safe phone case and put the phone in it yesterday. That's when the problem started. I just wanted to point that out in case that is the common thread for other people - if not then this additional note is irrelevant.

I'm not sure I would use a Magsafe case on your iPhone unless you plan to charge your phone with a Magsafe charger. Remember the case now has magnets in it, which permit the Magsafe charger to magnetically attach to the case for precise placement when you attach the charger. If you're using a non-Magsafe Qi charger, the magnet in the case is likely going to cause issues.

Hi Lobsterghost1, while I appreciate that you are trying to be helpful, I can confirm that when the phone was not wirelessly charging, I took the phone out of the mag-safe case and the phone was still not wirelessly charging on any of my wireless chargers. Further, as I described in my post, after the reboot, the phone charges on the wireless charger while it is in the mag-safe case.

Therefore, the problem was not incompatibility between the mag-safe case and the charger. The problem is between the phone and and the charger, and only the iPhone 12 and the charger, not other devices. Since a reboot fixed it, it might be a software issue, and it could even possibly be a software issue related to the mag-safe case.

Let me explain how a mag-safe case could affect the software: When you place the phone inside the mag-safe case, a software action takes place. Specifically, a large Circle takes over the screen to indicate that the phone has detected the mag-safe accessory. For me, that was approximately when the wireless charging stopped working until the reboot. After the reboot - the circle doesn't appear on the screen.

I don't know if the mag-safe case is the culprit here. I just want to point it out in case it is a common thread for others. But the mag-safe case itself is not creating a conflict between the phone and the charger. If the mag-safe case is the culprit then it would be due to its interaction with the software - not the magnets and the charger.

If your phone was not charging without the magsafe case, I would imagine like me and many others, it's the charger. I have effectively proven that a more modern Qi charger, with a higher W QC3.0 charger and dual charging coils completely fixed the charging issue we were having with our phones. No software update was required as we were already on 14.2. And no reboot or restart was required either. What worked was getting new chargers with higher output and dual charging plates.

Nov 19, 2020 9:46 AM in response to lobsterghost1

Why would people care about it? The chargers, many of them "QI and MFI certified" and sold at Apple stores, such as Mophie 3 in 1 stand, do not work more than 20 mins when the phone is in MagSafe case or not work at all with iPhone 12.

From the consumer perspective, Apple has introduced a phone that has severe limitations working with standard QI chargers. Some work, some don't. Wasn't an issue with previous Apple phones.

Nov 19, 2020 9:51 AM in response to Stkasm682

Yes, that is true. But this isn't the first time, nor will it be the last time Apple has implemented a change in a device, which makes older accessories incompatible with the newer device. Fortunately, wireless chargers don't cost all that much money.

When I discovered I had an issue, I just decided to buy a much newer higher output wireless charger, with dual charging plates and it completely solved the issue for me. This means the phone isn't faulty, but some of these existing older chargers may no longer work with the new phones, while still working with older phones.

I bought a new charger for my office and for my home. And everything is working as I would want and expect.

I think you're still a bit confused about the scope here. Certifications, such as QI and MFI exist to ensure stable eco-structure and standards. If you adhere to the standard, it must work. If it doesn't it's a flow in certification process, which happens but one of the parties is clearly at fault for this, not consumer. Given that all other devices work just fine, it's likely that the root of the problem is on Apple's side.

I provided an example of the charger that was released like 3 months ago, MFI certified and sold at Apple stores, so it's not "old" or "underpowered" device by all means.

I'm not saying I won't buy a MagSafe dock once it's released, just saying that I'm stuck with ~ $150 device that doesn't work anymore and some people are stuck with chargers in cars that cannot be replaced.

Mophie can only send you a replacement with exactly the same problem. There is no mechanism currently to get my money back, so unless Mophie or Apple come up with a hardware/firmware update, I'm gonna have to swallow this loss and move on. Not the end of the world for sure but it's not great either.

Nov 19, 2020 10:05 AM in response to lobsterghost1

Then Apple should not have stated that iPhone 12 series is compatible with Qi chargers

Instead state that SOME chargers are compatible and what the requirements of the charger needs to be.

All of this is annoyance about this problem is that Apple seem to be very reluctant to admit there is a problem at all.

As many have said it works sometimes or works for a few minutes after a reboot. Even replaced phones still don’t work.

I am curious that this didn’t come up in their testing but wonder if it’s affecting people who restored back ups from previous phones? And maybe less of an issue for people new to iPhone?

Nov 19, 2020 10:23 AM in response to GT_UKie

I don't know if this is a software issue or an incompatibility issue. I can't speak for what Apple should or shouldn't have said either. I just know I had an issue and I bought new chargers and now I don't have an issue. I doubt whether restoring from backup from a previous phone or getting a first iPhone would make any difference.

Also, for me to buy new chargers was a benefit. When the now replaced chargers were purchased, they ONLY charged iPhone. Now with Apple Watch and Bluetooth earbud phones with wireless charging cases, it let me purchase charging stands which can charge all three at the same time. It's much more convenient and takes up much less space. So for me, it was a benefit to buy new chargers.

A final comment. If I figure out there's an issue effecting my ability to use my phone and I determine buying something newer can solve it, it's at least for me a preferable option as opposed to being frustrated over something I can solve with a few dollars.
