iPhone 12 Pro Wireless Charging Issues

I picked up the iPhone 12 Pro yesterday, and I can't get wireless charging to work properly. I have two Qi charging pads, both from different manufactures, and the 12 pro will only charge from them if it's been freshly rebooted. If I take the phone off the pad, and then place it back on the pad, it will not charge again unless I reboot the phone. The pads charge my Xs and my Galaxy S9, so they're not the problem. Anybody else having issues with wireless charging on the 12 pro?

I love it when someone who recently joined the forum with 4 points, tells someone who has been on the forum for over a decade and knows the forum managers personally, what Apple does or doesn't do here.

You are wrong. The people you hope are reading your posts are NOT here. If you want to tell Apple your thoughts where it will be heard you should do one or more of the following:

  1. Provide feedback via this link --> Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Call Apple
  3. Use the Contact Support button at the top of this page
  4. Schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and show them the issue you're having

Otherwise, it is you who is wrong about Apple paying attention here.

Because Apple changed the charging system on the new phones. Apple is not responsible for ensuring your device works with 3rd party accessories. Apple itself doesn't make or design chargers. If you bought a charger from Apple it was made by a 3rd party company. Apple just carried it in their store and sold it to you.

You can either be upset or buy something which we have tested and know works great. They're not going to issue a recall either. There's nothing wrong with the phone. It just doesn't play well with ALL 3rd party Wireless chargers.

Things change and they will continue to change.

No, I'm not misinforming anyone. iPhone 12 is still fully Qi Compliant. They moved the Qi charging location on the back of iPhone 12 to the middle of the phone for the new MagSafe charging system. The issue most people are experiencing is using an older single Qi charging plate and not being able to position the phone precisely over the plate. Also, many people aren't using high enough output QC3.0 charging bricks.

I was experiencing issues, much like many here are having. I figured out my Wireless charger wasn't outputing enough power and the charging stand was single charger, so our phones weren't charging. What to do? Buy a newer more modern charging stand (I've linked to it a few times in this thread) which features dual charging plates and an 18W QC3.0 brick.

So, what's the outcome? Our two iPhone 12's are now charging consistently and reliably on the new charging stands. Our iPhones are still Qi compliant. Our stands are Qi compliant, but they're better suited to the task at hand, which is charge the new 12 phones understanding the location of the Qi charging plate has been moved in iPhone 12 to better play with MagSafe charging.

Again, I'm not misinforming anyone. Perhaps you're simply not understanding the issue. I can't help you with that.

Your post are full of misinformation again.

1) Earlier in the tread I mentioned few months old Mophie 3 in 1 Stand, MFI certified. It's not underpowered and not working properly on iPhone 12 phones only. Changing position of the phone doesn't help.

So, your "underpowered" or "old" point is just wrong. Sure, some chargers could experiencing the issues but there are examples of "high powered" or "new" or "badly positioned coil" MFI chargers that don't work properly with this particular phone regardless of the position.

2) "QC3" is not a requirement of any kind, it's proprietary Qualcomm tech that's not even universally anywhere, some chargers use proprietary bricks, some USB-PD, some QC3. So, no point focusing on it, all varieties have examples on iPhone 12 specific breakage

3) Why in the world people should be replacing chargers that work just fine with iPhone XS, iPhone 11 and other QI Android phones? Some of the chargers cost > $100 earned dollars and served specific purposes. People typically don't buy "any charger", they buy something they like and expect MFI and QI certified chargers to work.

If it works with everything buy not iPhone 12, just going by probability theory, it's LIKELY that the issue is on the Apple's side.

4) Your personal outcome achieved by working around an issue spending extra money, while it works for you, it won't work for many other people for various reasons.

Many people mentioned that BUILT-IN chargers IN CARS stopped working. What's not clear about that? It's not possible to replace, so now you have to use external chargers that add cabling and space, it's just ugly.

5) You keep making incorrect statement that "Apple is compliant etc". The reality is - you don't know or have a way to check by yourself unless you have enough knowledge and equipment, know possible edge cases. So, you keep making statement without the ability to back them up.

People in the thread will make their own conclusions based on information provided.

Well I was at the Apple store with a technician who said the Mag Safe chargers are a QI charger, they just add a magnet around the perimeter to allow it to hold the phone. They admitted there is a problem and the Mag Safe was not a definite fix. They made me set up as a new phone, still did not work so they ordered me a mew one. Comes in tomorrow.

This is not just a problem with charging position. My wife's 12 Mini running iOS 14.2.1 would not charge on a brand new Belkin Wireless Charger 15W (WIA002) with the included 24W power supply or with another 24W QC 3.0 power supply I had on hand. Centered on the pad it would start charging and after a minute or two, just stop.

Based on a forum tip, I tried an old Apple 5W power supply with the Belkin pad and sure enough it charges the phone just fine! I read somewhere else that when used with a MagSafe charger, the iPhone 12 would stop charging if it got too hot and the battery was more than 80% charged. So it seems to me that this charging issue may be heat related since it seems to happen when charging at 7.5W (or higher) and after a variable amount of time.

FWIW, happening on a variety of charging set ups w my iPhone 12 Pro. It starts to charge and then at some point stops. I have an Ecoflow RiverBank for wireless. Also an OEM charging cable plugged in to a powered USB hub, as well as an OEM plugged into an Anker Powerport 4, the label of which says it charges at 2.4 amps max per any USB plug. I also have a pretty generic car charger which SEEMS to work, but I’m rarely in my car long enough to gather much useful info on that device.

I know this topic is wireless, but the start/stop has been happening on both wired and wireless.

I turned off Optimized Battery Charging, and also turned off auto lock so I could keep an eye on things. This morning it charged to 100% (finally) on the Anker Powerport 4. Went smoothly and quickly.

I did look at the battery health meter, and it hadn’t charged over 50% in the last week. I don’t know if the Optimized Battery Charging is being smarter than I want it to be and is this controlling things, or if that’s just coincidence.

How would you explain that it works fine at the lower charging rate? Magnets are still there.

Third party vendors implement the Qi protocol independently, and it's possible that some mistake the magnets for "interfering objects" between the phone and the charging pad.

It's also possible the same is true when the phone is drawing too much power through the Qi coils.

Regardless, it's clear that this is like Bluetooth where Apple is using newer portions of the protocol that third party vendors may not have implemented in the most optimal manner.
