iPhone 12 Pro Wireless Charging Issues

I picked up the iPhone 12 Pro yesterday, and I can't get wireless charging to work properly. I have two Qi charging pads, both from different manufactures, and the 12 pro will only charge from them if it's been freshly rebooted. If I take the phone off the pad, and then place it back on the pad, it will not charge again unless I reboot the phone. The pads charge my Xs and my Galaxy S9, so they're not the problem. Anybody else having issues with wireless charging on the 12 pro?

Bring it back and exchange it - there are many people who claim this is a software problem, but the question is why isn't all iPhone 12 Pro phones having this issue? They've sold many of these phones and you'd think there would be thousands of complaints by now online.

I did two hard resets and nothing improved. It never charged wirelessly for me. I put it on a Qi compliant Mophie puck and another Qi charger and the same thing happens. It charges for a second and then stops.

I contacted Apple support and they said to bring it back and that it was not a software bug. Not that I expect Apple to admit it but if it is not a software bug then you'll be very sorry that you did not exchange it within the warranty period. Make sure you at the very least document this with Apple Support before your exchange period expires.

Well, after more testing with some different QI chargers we have here at the house, here’s what I’ve determined:

1) Stand up QI chargers didn’t work. I tried two that we have here and It may be that the coils just don’t align.

2) Puck QI chargers work much better. My guess is that they have a larger surface area and possibly a more spread out coil.

I tried both my office puck and my son’s here at home and both charged without issue.

3) As for my Tiguan, I need to test more but Friday on my way home I was able to get it to charge by sliding the top of the phone as far to the left as I could. This I guess lines the coil up better.

The only other thing I have to see is if output wattage makes a difference. I would think that a minimum of 10W output would work better than 7.5 QI chargers. Maybe someone has looked at that here and can comment.

I’m not sure why this keeps going in circles. People need to start reading the comments! THIS IS NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE. If you can use 2 out of 5 wireless QI chargers it’s NOT HARDWARE. It’s NOT the charger. ITS THE SOFTWARE. My phone charges on a stand up one. It charges on a flat one that’s built into my car. The mophie stream pad + (puck) it doesn’t work. Same for my brother. This is a SOFTWARE issue and needs to be addressed by apple.

I believe it’s a software issue. My spouse and I both got our 12 Pro Max today and they will not charge wirelessly. We tried them on a Mophie 3-In-1 and two different Samsung chargers with no luck.

The reason I believe this is a software issue is because I had this same issue on my 11 Pro Max running iOS 14 developer beta. Before installing the beta on my 11, wireless charging worked fine. It even worked with the first couple of beta releases. However, after the early October release wireless charging stopped working on all three of my charging pads. Power cycling the phone fixed the issue for a day or two. The problem was reported via Feedback Assistant on 09 October, but I never heard anything back from Apple.

My spouses 11 Pro Max, which didn’t have the beta iOS, worked fine on all of our chargers.

I was hoping that the new phones would resolve the issue...unfortunately I now have 2 new phones that won’t wirelessly charge.

I have a Mophie pad and it charges then stops. Sometimes right away, other times it will charge for awhile then stop. Battery power doesn’t seem to have an effect. I think this i12 pro has only fully charged once via wireless. It’s not the pads per se, but the interface from pad to phone. It’s an Apple problem, hopefully one they get ironed out real fast

How would you explain that it works fine at the lower charging rate? Magnets are still there.

Third party vendors implement the Qi protocol independently, and it's possible that some mistake the magnets for "interfering objects" between the phone and the charging pad.

It's also possible the same is true when the phone is drawing too much power through the Qi coils.

Regardless, it's clear that this is like Bluetooth where Apple is using newer portions of the protocol that third party vendors may not have implemented in the most optimal manner.

Good observation about the wattage. That being said, I tried with my 30 watt MacBook Air adapter this morning and it seemed to work well. So Apple power supplies work with my Belkin 15W pad while the Belkin and Aukey QC3.0 power supplies do not.

If the problem turns out to be related to the design of the power supply, this is going to be a big problem for people who can’t replace them (i.e., built into their car).

I'm seeing a lot of reports of iPhone 12 issues. According to the site iDrop (which seems reputable, but I still have my skepticisms due to the ads they post at the end of every article) Apple supposedly is aware of the issue, is working on it, and will probably be released via a software update. The problems are not with the Qi chargers or charging pads. It's something in the iPhone itself. Hopefully it'll be resolved in an upcoming software update soon. These reported issues are what's causing me to hold off on ordering one. That, and obviously the price of these newest smartphones.

There is nothing wrong with your phone. All you need to do is disable the Optimised Battery Charging in your Battery settings. This function stops charging your phone when it reaches 80% and aims to finish it just when you need to use it. It’s meant to preserve battery life. All you have to do is go to Settings, Battery, then Battery Health. In there, you can disable Optimised Battery Charging. It means your phone will now charge like normal.

You’re welcome. ;)

Since the beginning of the thread

  • There are people who have tried to turn off that setting and failed
  • There are people who have various chargers types which work only to stop working at the next charging session
  • There are people who can hard reset in order to get the phone to charge wirelessly again only to have it fail again hours or days later
  • There are people who can soft reset for the same effect.
  • There are people who need to do both a hard reset and a soft reset.
  • There are people who bought a new puck (like they should have to with a phone that didn’t come with one) which fixed their issue.

This is a firmware problem by process of elimination. Might even be a phone hardware issue that reduces its compatibility with certain Qi charges; a statement which Apple doesn’t make on their product specs.
