iPhone 12 Pro Lock Sound Issue

I just got my iPhone 12 Pro and found a very annoying issue with the lock sound and sometimes the keyboard typing sound.

The lock sound goes weird when it has been idle for a few seconds. If I start playing something, the lock sound of iPhone 12 Pro will stay normal for another few seconds.

Please see the video I took:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlzK1CT6WV0

It happens after rebooting the device and happens all the time for me.

Is it only me or something wrong with the system?

Thanks

Hi,

Since this seems to be related to software issue, I have upgraded my iPhone 12 Pro to iOS 14.2 beta. And now the issue is gone. Looks like iOS dev team noticed and fixed this issue in the next update.

I would recommend everyone has this issue wait a bit for the next system update.

Let’s hope Apple are able to rectify the problem soon - seems that some people have the sound problems that are attributed with MagSafe accessories only and others are experiencing sound issues when they’ve not used MagSafe.

I’ ve also had the issue with keyboard clicks becoming slightly louder, the longer I type - it’s all very strange.

let’s hope this is a software bug that can be squashed and no a hardware fault - I think it’s more of the former.

Ok. So what do we have so far. Reading through this thread only:

Those users that HAVE been using MagSafe are having the problems with system sounds and notification sounds.

Those who have NEVER used a MagSafe device have also experienced the same problems with notification sounds and system sounds.

Rebooting the system temporarily fixes the problem temporarily for some of us.

Also, it does not seem to be happening to “everybody“ that has a newer iphone.

I would think that it is a bug in the operating system, and not just a MagSafe issue. But it seems more prominent in those that have MagSafe than those that don’t. We can only hope that the new iOS coming out will address this issue for all of us.

I’ve contacted apple support because I have the same problem. Even when play some music it disappears, but when I put it on the MagSafe charger starts all over again. They said I needed to turn off the sound when you lock the phone on settings, reboot it and turn them on again and that should solve the problem, surprisingly it didn’t, and the last thing they told me it was a software related issue that probably with iOS 14.3 would be fixed, but by reading more comments on this post and think it may be not.

This doesn't fix it. I'm now on 14.3 and the issue persists. It does seem to be MagSafe that triggers the strange lock sound. One work around that I have discovered is that if I flip my silent switch before I apply MagSafe charging, when I remove the MagSafe, and flip the silent switch back (silent off) the lock sound still sounds normal. Kind of an annoying way to fix it, but it seems to work.

The newest update 14.3 does not fix this issue....at least not for me. Currently, there’s only the temporary fix of restarting the phone.

It seems to be entirely caused by the MagSafe charger and/or the MagSafe case. Could something else be causing this too? Who knows. Many people are saying this bug causes changes to the screen lock noise and the keyboard typing noise.

I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I don’t use the MagSafe case. I do, however, use the MagSafe charger. Every single time, the moment I take my phone off the MagSafe charger, the lock noise ends up changing to a loud one click noise. If I restart my phone, the lock noise goes right back to normal. I too have noticed that if I’m watching a YouTube video, playing a video game, or listening to iTunes, and then lock my screen while doing these activities, the lock screen noise goes back to normal. However, if I unlock my phone, close whatever app I was using, then the lock noise goes right back to being loud. Only restarting the phone helps.....until I use the MagSafe charger again.

I’ve contacted Apple for help. They have no idea what I’m talking about. Gives me little confidence they’ll fix it anytime soon....

I have asked Apple Support and the geniuses at Apple Store in the first week of the launch of iPhone 12. The support agent told me that he will take note and let engineering team know. The geniuses told me that they can not tell any difference even after I have "hacked" all displayed iPhones. They said that if it's true, it could be a feature instead of a bug to remind you it's MAGSAFE. Cool.

That is all well and good, but as for my situation, not only is the keyboard sounds and issue the lock screen sounds an issue, but also iMessages notifications are acting the same way - they are not there at all, unless a restart is done and the fix only lasts a brief time before the sounds disappear again.

Also Note: I do not use nor have I ever used MagSafe in any fashion whatsoever neither the case nor the charger.

And the latest update has not fixed this bug.

I think it is important to note that their claim of a “MagSafe Only issue“ is not the case. I think it is an overall systemwide bug that they cannot identify the cause of and are laying it on mag safe.

You are probably correct, it might not be just a MagSafe issue and might be a wider software bug. I’m sure Apple are aware of it and will address it in line with other software priorities.

Just wanted to say that my sound issues centred around using the MagSafe case, I’ve had no other sound issues at all. Once I applied the restart as I mentioned a few posts ago, the lock sound returned to. Or so and hasn’t reappeared since.

I hope your software issues get resolved soo.

System synths (sound) issue appears across entire iPhone 12 lineup. This includes variable/inconsistent volume levels of all system sounds including keyboard, lock, message sent/receive and other system’s synths. I am working with Apples senior support advisor on this issue.

The Lock synth distortion is triggered by MagSafe synth (when iPhone is connected to the MagSafe charger). iPhone must be restarted to restore proper Lock synth/sound.

Apple is aware of this issue and it is not fixed in iOS 14.3.

Just got the iPhone 12 mini. Keyboard sounds get louder while typing and I also recognised that the overall sound quality sounds very strange. Like there is a sound effect like a flanger, echo or strong compression going on. I just got a voice message and thought the problem was on the other site but the same message sounded normal on my wife’s phone. I than played some audio books and music and the same effect was there. It like strange popping, glitchy sound. Did anyone else recognise this?

Dec 26, 2020 9:20 PM in response to wasinger84

Calm down cupcake, we don’t all assume it’s a MagSafe issue - some people have a sound issue with MagSafe and others don’t.

Mine was MagSafe related, which is now sorted and yours isn’t.

Theres no thyme or reason to this, people are experiencing sound issues and that’s simply it. Let’s hope Apple address whatever it is very soon so people can enjoy their phones.

I’ve done everything apple told me. Even upgrading iOS, factory reset... what is the procedcre in order to replace the iPhone? Because apple support also just told me to wait to iOS 14.3 (which is now currently available) and that should fix the problem which is not solved by today. Also mine has some issues with the camera. Using FaceTime becomes laggy, at night mode seems I have blackberry camera built in.

Here is my and another Reddit discussion about the audio problems.

https://reddit.com/r/iphonehelp/comments/kkyttv/iphone_12_mini_internal_speaker_sound_problems/

My theory is some psycho acoustic trick / effect to give a “bigger” sound from the tiny speaker that goes haywire.

IMHO the strange audio effect is linked to the keyboard sound / Lock Screen sound problem.

@FabioM08 I bought it from the Amazon Apple Store. I just had a chat with the support and that’s it. I’m from Germany and during the first 30 days one can hand devices back to the seller if one has any kind of problem with them.
