Wireless Carplay issues once moving to IOS 14, 14.0.1 and then 14.1 (No issue when I had IOS 13.7)

I have a 2021 Kia K5 and the first few weeks my iPhone XR worked fine with the wireless Carplay (With the K5 you have to use wireless, cannot be wired). During this time I was on the latest IOS 13 version 13.7 and had no issues. In Sept, I ungraded to IOS 14 and immediately started having issues with Carplay, I waited for 14.0.1 and then 14.1 to see if it would have a fix but still nothing. The problem I have is at random times, sometimes after only a few minutes, sometime 10 minutes, sometimes 20 minutes Carplay disconnect enough for the car to show an error that says "Phone Not Responding. Please reconnect it and try again." (see picture) when this happens I am usually running Spotify and Waze or Google Maps. It happens multiple times throughout the drive. Also the music does not stop and I can hear the turn by turn directions but have to hit OK and then the Apple Carplay button again to see the Map screen (Very annoying and not safe when trying to navigate to a destination. So it seems that the apps are still connected and running but the phone disconnects wirelessly just enough for the car not to see the phone and produce the error. I have tried all combinations of forgetting the network and Bluetooth connection and resetting each both on the car and phone. Renaming the phone connection, restarting the device etc. I have tried everything suggested on multiple Websites/Forums and on this forum. Nothing helps. I also notice that many other people are having this issue since IOS 14 has come out, this is not a random issue it is wide spread and is occurring on multiple car platforms. My question is has this issue been noted and is it being addressed in IOS 14.2? If not Apple has to make the signed IOS 13.7 version available so we can downgrade the working version until this is fixed. It is not only inconvenient it is a safety hazard.

Thank you,

Rich

The update to fix this issue is finally available. Your dealerships should be able to download it to a thumb drive and do the update. Mine was done today and so far so good, I drove about 15 miles with Waze and Spotify running and had no disconnects. Fingers crossed. Here is a print screen that describes the update if the dealership is unaware and needs to find the bulletin.

Seems BMW owners had a similar WiFi-related issue a year ago that was fixed with a software update to the head unit. That was long before iOS 14 came out.

Anyone know if head unit OEMs that support ACP have to get licensed under Apple's MFi program? I would expect there's more to that process than signing an NDA and Apple throwing some code fragments over the wall. I developed software for a living for over 30 years before retiring. At a minimum one would expect Apple to provide an iOS-based ACP test/certification app to stress the head unit. The OEM should have to demonstrate to Apple that the head unit passes a suite of certification tests before the OEM could receive a digitally signed production certificate from Apple in order to take it to market.

Here's a recent list of cars that support Apple CarPlay.

I don't think this issue is related to any version of IOS or any make of car. People have been reporting issues with Apple CarPlay disconnecting for a long time, certainly since IOS 10. The problem with CarPlay disconnecting happens with all makes of cars, in my case an Audi but there are people reporting the exact same issues with Mercedes Benz, BMW, Mini, Chevy, KIA, Jaguar you name it.

When we use my wife's iPhone SE there is no problem, only happens with my XR. We are both running on IOS14, but the problem is not fixed by updating to the latest level.

The disconnects happen most often when navigating using Google Maps, doesn't seem to happen when using Apple Maps. It seems to disconnect most often when reaching or leaving populated areas. So maybe it's caused by joining or leaving a network?

To me it seems like its an issue with the settings on my phone, so even buying a new handset will not necessarily fix the problem. Unless I were to start from scratch rather than restoring all the settings and backups from the old phone. But who is willing to do that these days, I have loads of Apps and content and it would be difficult to start from zero.

I think there is something fundamentally wrong with CarPlay and it needs to be fixed, over to Apple.

I have a 2020 Subaru and a 2019 Subaru as well as the Kia GT line. No issues w the Subarus, ever.

Also, we utilized the lemon law here in NJ, and they’re initiating the buy back because of this issue. Apple has made it clear the issue is with the car manufacturer, not them.

I’m not going to keep waiting for someone to own the problem and fix it.

This is amusing! My iPhone7 running IOS 14.3 loses screen connection every couple minutes on my Kia K5 (only connects wirelessly) but works just fine on wife’s Kia Niro (connected through cable). My wife has not updated her iPhone 7 to IOS14 (running 13.7) and it works better in my K5 but will eventually lose connection. This tells me problem existed prior to IOS14 and was amplified with update. Kia definitely passing the buck but will somehow “save the day” with their eventual update!

I am also having this problem. I purchased 3 KIA's since March. 2020 Kia Forte, 2021 Kia Forte and & 3 weeks ago, a 2021 Kia Sorento Hybrid. The 2 Kia Forte's do not have this problem using Apple Carplay. Only the Sorento has the problem. But it is exactly the same problem that IronManCamper has. I took it to Kia today and the dealer called the Kia Corporate Tech center. They also blamed it on Apple. FYI, I tried 3 Iphone XR's and also purchased a genuine Apple cord for the cars USB connection. It is in fact a safety issue for obvious reasons. Something has to be done before somebody get hurt because of it.

Ever heard of the Blame Game? You have now. This is most oft response when a manufacturer drops the ball. I'm quite Apple and Kia are working together to fix this, but Apple provided Kia the API's for every iOS version well in advance of any public release. It's up to the manufacturers to implement the appropriate changes. I've said this before and I'll say it again, Apple doesn't own the code to Kia systems. Kia needs to work with Apple to get this right for all of you effected.

I've never once had a CarPlay integration issue with Mercedes. Very few manufacturers have issues. But if they do, the manufacturers have to work with Apple to fix it for their customers. Not the other way around.

Since it's the Sorento which isn't working it has a different interface, hence the issue. As a newer system, when Kia has a fix, they will roll it out either wirelessly if your can be updated that way, or you'll take your car to your dealer and they'll have to update it in their shop.

My Mercedes updates its systems over the air, in the background and I don't ever have to initiate an update. It just happens. I don't know if Kia does it the same way, but I imagine the newest Kia's are similar.

I can offer you my opinion... I say go to the dealership and get the update. Of course it will most likely not work but at least you can show Kia that you did your part and tried the update and it’s still not working. Who knows how long it will be before Kia send out another update. Look how long it took them to get this one. I was informed by Apple that there is currently no resolution for this problem.

Not true. My wife’s iPhone running IOS 13.7 encountered the glitch as well so it predates IOS 14. Granted, it took about two hours driving before “losing connection”, so it was nowhere near as frequent as my phone running IOS14 (about every 2 to 10 minutes!). I think the 14 update may have exacerbated an already existing problem. I still think car manufacturer should fight for customer and not just pass the buck. If you sell a car with the CarPlay feature, then you have to support CarPlay. Fight is between Kia-Hyundai (same company) and Apple. Just get it fixed!
