This started happening after downloading Big Sur
MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.15
I had similar issue and I succeed to have it solved by following steps:
Go to the system settings and Screen, uncheck the True Tone and restart the MacBook.
You now may go back and tick in/activate the True Tone.
This action did solve my problem. The screen is now going black and shut down normally!

I had the same issue after the Big Su 11.2 update. I turned off the true color and night shift, restarted and the screen is now okay. Thanks for tour help and this cool hack!

I get da same thing, but at a different time. It happened when I clicked on "Login Window" in user switching, and then it froze. It did this one Minute after.
