Qi charging iPhone 12

I was just on the phone with my Volvo dealer and they told me that they had been in contact with Volvo about it. Volvo indicated that there will be a software update in the 2nd quarter of 2021. You will have to book an appointment at the dealer to install the update. He told me to call them around Easter because that’s around the time where they expect the software to be released.

I had the update (Volvo XC40 Recharge all electric) installed on Monday. My iPhone 12 now charges successfully on the wireless pad. It would disconnect every few seconds before the software update.

I live in Sweden, I just had an answer from Swedish online Volvo Support stating:

"Volvo has an improved/ enhanced FOD (foreign object detection) feature that detects the magnet from magsafe and turns off the charging.

Tjej also say that iPhone 12 is not QI certified so tehy recommend us to charge phone with cable"

I find this answer from them really annoying. Not only do the charge extra for this feature, but non of the sales resellers know about this. My question to Volvo is, should iphone12 owners stay away from a Volvo??

For me this is a nonsense answer, they can just turn off FOd or make its less sensitive.

Other car manufactures don't have this problem. oWner if anyone here has gotten any help at all from Volvo? You should start bombard them with requests on fixing this error. there will be more and more people buying a Volvo and realizing that the charging doesn't work with a phone from one of the largest manufactures in the world... Really how are they thinking??

There is now a fix for the charging. You need to go to the dealership and have the software updated. As far as the streaming on the 12 it still is not resolved and Volvo

has no ETA on when it will be resolved.

Volvo now has a software update for the car for wireless charging to fix the problem with iphone 12.

Just got the update to my XC60. Other than all saved settings being removed, the update fixes the wireless charging issue with my iPhone 12 Pro.

When closing the front lid. Move the phone to the top and slide it towards right side of the charger. I still got the error letting the phone rest in middle or left side.

As far as I’m aware, the issue actually relates to FOD (foreign object detection) within Volvo’s wireless charging pad. This is because Apple doesn’t conform to the Qi charging standard with its new MagSafe charging. There is nothing Apple can do per se, it’s just a design decision that probably isn’t going away anytime soon. But fortunately for us, it sounds like Volvo is working on a fix that will essentially recalibrate or disable that foreign object detection sensor for the iPhone 12. That’s why you start seeing it working at first but then it stops working.

Update done. Takes 40 min. Now it works!

The basic settings of the car are unfortunately on the factory settings (everything under Settings).

I was at the Volvo dealer Moll in Düsseldorf.

Try calling another dealer, even if they are hundreds of miles away. I spoke to mine and they confirmed that there is an update to fix this issue. I haven’t scheduled an appointment yet, figured I don’t mind waiting until it’s due for service.

Maybe not US site but the dealer should be able to find the update. Chose another car (I have a v60 and has the same update there.)

I am in NY. Dealer did update and now works. Very slow charging but stays on.

I am having this problem with iPhone 12 and all of my Qi wireless chargers. Rebooting the phone is a temporary fix.

I have tried removing the soft plastic pad to put directly the iPhone on the charger. It seems to work better : I only got the error twice, when the car went on a speed bump

I have a new 2021 XC60 and an iPhone 12 also (and the same exact issue happens). I also bought a new 2021 S60 and the issue occurs there. I took out an old iPhone XS and it charges fine on the XC60 and S60. I'm really hoping a software update soon will fix the issue... maybe an iPhone engineer also buys a 2021 Volvo and escalates this issue to the top of the backlog! ;)
