I get a message "The File can't be found" when I plug in my iPhone via USB

When I connect my iPhone to my MacBook Pro via USB I get the message "The file can't be found" and I have to click "Ok" before the phone mounts in finder. This has only occurred since updating to Big Sur 11.0.1 and it doesn't seem to cause any other problems but is mildly inconvenient.

Anyone else experience this?

For me, this was fixed (from Apple Support):

Plug in iPhone (and, sure, dismiss the pop-ups).

Open up the Image Capture application.

In the … (circle w/ dots) to left of trash can icon.

Click on the dots, and, in the drop-down for ‘Connecting this iPhone opens:’

 select  ‘Other’.

In the ‘Finder’-like file navigator,

Use the left panel to select the Applications folder,

and then, in the right panel, select Image Capture.

Then, in the lower right of the navigator window…

click the ‘Choose’ button.

Close the Image Capture application (CMD-Q)

Try plugging the phone in again.  It should launch Image Capture, and

put up thumbnails of your photos.

If you don’t want that to happen…

Try re-doing the drop down for what to do upon connection…

and select ‘no application’

Oddly:  that’s probably where it was set when you started this cleanup!

For me… nothing happens on plug in now!  Just the way it was supposed to be!

And the pop-ups… they’re gone, too!

... at least... that all worked for me. on Big Sur 11.0.1 // iPhone6 12.4.9

Thanks @yumster222. I just reread D.Cornelius's solution. I had missed the first instruction. Plug in the phone. That was pretty silly of me.

Now I followed the instructions: Plug in the phone, changed the IC start up app to Image Capture, unplugged phone, plugged it in again, changed the IC start up app to "no application", unplugged and plugged the phone in again and the annoying pop ups no longer appear.

Perhaps a missing default in the program's plist?

I have the same issue specially after I installed the BigSur. Using ImageCapture is not the optimum way to backup your iphone to your computer. You can still do so by using PHOTOS on your computer. laugh Photos and connect your iPhone to the MAC, ignore the message "File cannot be found". once you open your iPhone and Trust the connection to the MAC, the iPhone will pop up under Devices in Photos. Click on the iPhone under Devices and on the top Select "Open Photos for this device". then you are ready to import the photos on your iPhone.

However, I still cant find a way to backup the iPhone as we use to!!??

After resetting the Image Capture setting to either None or Image Capture try the following:

Try resetting the iPhone's settings via its General ➙ Reset preference pane:

WARNING: be careful to NOT click on the "Erase All Content and Settings" button just below it. That's a big NO-NO.

Hey, folks. I’m new here and would still be considered a Mac novice...

But I figured another way to help solve this in conjunction with what’s already been offered. A year or two ago I suffered from my phone (iPhone XR) not staying plugged in to my late ‘15 iMac... or more specifically it would constantly connect and disconnect. VERY FRUSTRATING. So after much of said frustration and searching for answers, I discovered that for whatever reason, you have to go in the through the “activity monitor” to turn of the “usbd”. That solved my issue with that... occasionally it would happen again and I would simply go back and follow that simple process again and it would work. So tonight I went to plug my phone in and got endless and mind numbing constant “File Can’t Be Found”. I tried the recommended courses of action couldn’t even get my phone to stay connected for more than a second... very much like my problem before. Then it occurred to me to try the Force Quit on the “usbd”. It worked! Well, at least gave me enough time to back the phone up because as soon as the phone completed it’s backup the flood of “TFCBF” boxes flooded my screen. I hope they can get this squared away. If the the amount of time that I have spent staring at my screen in complete confusion because of some new bug or issue would buy MacBook Pro’s, iPad Pro’s, and all the extra accessories several times over. I hope my suggestion was able to help anyone on their last leg.

Fwiw, I see these two message in the console each time I plug in my iPhone. The pop up a few seconds after the "File can't be found" message. Seems like too much of a coincidence to be unrelated.

They are from the AMPDevicesAgent / com.apple.AMPDevicesAgent

I mean this doesn't help you, but maybe that can help the specialists track down the problem.

Me too... (just 2 pop up windows) all my family's iPhone's are fine but mine was as if the iPhone had never been backed up to the computer before... and when I synced and backed up - all my previously synced content was erased (music/movies) and my contacts were not longer in the cloud - under the info tab. This was the first time I had gone form Mojave... so I wonder if it's the new non-iTunes culture, looking for something - but that doesn't explain other phones in the house working ok. Just me. Annoying as when I resented, I ended up with 3 versions of all my contacts...(!)

Hi, I have an IPhone 8+ went to Image Capture then went to >> top right next to magnifying glass and chose "Action" then went to Open and the 3 dots in the circle was there and changed the it to "Other". Once you change it, it asked to unlock phone and download photos. I was confused to and today was the day I was going to figure it since it's been 3 months since I synced my phone. Good luck!

The app is on your MAC, click on your desktop to select finder then hit command key and spacebar, this will bring up a small window which you start typing image capture, at some point it will auto fill with the name, when it shows hit the return key, this will open the application and then you can follow the direction you had. If don't see the 3 dots drag the image capture widows to make it larger, you should then see the dots. you need to have your iPhone connected during all this.

Hey there! I don’t believe the phone needs to be plugged in or connected when changing the setting in Image Capture, should be able to remove the phone, then make the change, then reconnect it.

Also in my case, not sure if it was necessary now but I had reset the Privacy and Location settings on my phone, and cleared the cache on the Mac. Good luck!
