HDMi to dvi on new mac mini does not work

2 days ago , i recieved a Mac Mini M1.

HDMI to DVI did not work.

Called Support , told me to send M1 back. Monday I will get a new one.

Asked them , could it not be an overall problem. They laughed with me. On that time I had four people of support on the telephone, they all told me my M1 was defect. "Send it back" Now I read on the net that it is an overall problem. USB-c to DVI would work.

The support people did not know there job my believing. If I had bought my computer in the ALDI I could understand that they did not know, but for certified APPLE support people this is not done.

i try to get compensation I have to buy usb-c to dvi adapter.

I can not understand why apple did NOT test that ???????

Mac mini, macOS 10.15

Found a Solution.... The Star-tech powered 3 in 1 adapter worked! I was able to setup dual monitor DVI. one with a USB-C to DVI and one with the StarTech.com Travel A/V Adapter 3-in-1 HDMI to DisplayPort VGA or DVI - HDMI Adapter - 1920 x 1200 (HD2DPVGADVI). Since it is powered, it converts the signal. Powered the USB with a USB brick since I only get 2 on the Mac mini. Works great! Frustrating but now I get 2 monitors without using a USB video driver and don't have to replace my monitors and KVM.

Yes, USB-C to DVI should work just fine. We are having the same problem with an old DVI monitor and our brand-new Mac mini. We tried two different (older) DVI monitors and several different HDMI to DVI adapters. We got Apple to replace our brand-new M1 Mac Mini with a new one. Nothing helped. But both monitors and both Mac Minis worked fine with a USB-C to DVI adapter. I don't like using up one of our two USB-C ports, but at least the monitor works.

Maybe your DVI display is too old to support HDCP.

It seems HDCP is the reason for DVI adapters not working with some older displays, such as the Apple Cinema displays.

"IMPORTANT NOTE - USB-C systems from Apple require that DVI monitors support HDCP. Non-HDCP DVI monitors will not work in OS X, though are supported in BootCamp. Not compatible with Apple Cinema Displays"

I got a USB-C to DVI cable and it works (see my other posts here). But still want my brand new M1 Mac mini to work properly. Several calls to Apple - had me boot to safe mode, also reinstall Big Sur. Neither worked. Next step was buy a new Apple HDMI to DVI adapter cable. This is the same Apple cable I already own but my old adapter cable is maybe 9 years old - and the apple tech said this adapter cable got redesigned. New cable will be here in a few days and I will test and report back. Skeptical it is the solution, but I have been fooled before with odd-ball cable problems, so fingers crossed.

Well, it depends. I tried an Acer H233H monitor, which has VGA, DVI, and HDMI ports and is HDCP compliant. The DVI port on the monitor to the USB-C port on the Mac mini works. The DVI port on the monitor to the HDMI port on the Mac mini does not work. The direct HDMI to HDMI connection works. Connecting HDMI on the monitor to USB-C on the Mac mini works but with extremely poor quality video.

Last week, I had a 2,5 hour talk with apple support about my new MacMini where I could not connect my DVI monitor to the HDMI port with adapters.

We figured out that the HDMI port itself works like a charm, when I connected to the TV.

Then Apple support sent my ticket to the engineers, and the reply from there was:

This is a known error. The HDMI port does not support DVI.

This will be fixed in future software update.

So now, I just await any new software updates for Big Sur.

Reporting after my Beta install on my second Volume. HDMI to DVI works. After rebooting out of the volume with the beta and onto my normal volume that is still on 11.1 it is working there as well. It was essentially a Firmware update without needing to do the beta software, except on the volume I'm not using.

If you want to try this. Install MacOS on a second volume per https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208891 . Then you just boot to that Volume and enroll in the beta program on beta.apple.com . It will install on the second Volume and leave your actual partition untouched. You better backup before doing this if you need to just in case.

Am I correct in my understanding that no HDMI adapters work and USB-C can only power one monitor? My problem is that I was planning to use 2 monitors, both of which are DVI, and from this thread, it seems like this is currently not possible with the M1 mini.

DVI is a thing of the past with the M1 as DVI is now 21 years old.

HDMI is supported but not via non-Apple adapters. The Apple USB-C to HDMI adaptor is supported.

The M1 supports using a HDMI 2.0 port, or Thunderbolt 3.

The M1 supports dual display extended, video mirroring, and Airplay mirroring.

One 4K display @ 60Hz. One 6K display @ 60 Hz. (Thunderbolt 3 only).

I took delivery of a new MacMini M1 a couple of weeks ago and was a bit disappointed to discover that my Thunderbolt 2 display wouldn't connect without a Thunderbolt 3 adapter. Managed to get one next day from Argos so no problem (£49.00 though!!) So in the meantime I hooked it up to my second monitor (an ancient Samsung) via a HDMI to DVI cable but disappointingly it wouldn't work, although this cable and monitor combination works fine on my Mac Pro (late 2013). So, desperate to see it working I hooked it up to my old Sony Bravia TV via the HDMI cable that normally connects my Freeview box and that worked fine - managed to set up the MacMini and have a little play with it. I now have it happily running on my Thunderbolt display via the adapter. I have just been doing a bit of research and found that the HDMI port on the Mac Pro is v1.4 whereas on the MacMini M1 it is v2.0. So I presume the problem lies therein but that doesn't explain how the MacMini M1works fine via HDMI on an old Sony Bravia TV. Ultimately I need it to work on my wife's ancient 'Formac' monitor which might only have an old VGA port so I will cross that bridge when I get to it - might be time to replace the 'Formac' as it is ancient and has a scratched screen. So impressed with the new MacMini M1 and although I got it to replace my wife's old MacMini Intel I5 I'm actually going to keep it for the time being and sell my Mac Pro!

There is a bunch of people here with the exact same problem.

Replacing the Mac Mini doesn't help, some of you found out.

PLEASE EVERYBODY.. Contact Apple and report this issue, so they'll fix it (they'll assign you a case ID)

If enough people report it, there's a good chance. If you don't have time calling, start a chat from their website.

So I expect everyone from this thread has already reported it (hopefully) :D

Fingers crossed for the next Big Sur update

It is a problem sure but not unsurmountable. I am assuming it is something to do with compatibility - the MacPro (2013) has a HDMI port v1.4 whereas the MacMini M1 has a HDMI port v2.0.

My MacPro (2013) works fine on my ancient Samsung monitor via a standard 'HDMI to DVI' cable but my new MacMini M1 doesn't work with the same arrangement. (Maybe it's the cable? I have not tried using a different HDMI to DVI cable as I only bought it to support a new graphics card in my Windows PC). The new MacMini M1 does work fine, however, on my ancient Sony Bravia TV using a dedicated HDMI to HDMI cable (the one I normally use for my Freeview box).

I am currently running my new MacMini M1 on my Thunderbolt Display using a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter which works fine. (But wasn't cheap!)

I am very impressed indeed with the new M1 chip and in un-scientific trials, comparing it with my MacPro (2013) it comes out at least as fast and in most cases significantly faster, both booting up programs and in daily use. So much so that I now plan to replace all our Intel Macs with M1's in time. The only slight drawback with the MacMini M1 is its shortage of ports, only 2xUSB3 and 2xThunderbolt3 and 1xHDMI. Running it through a Thunderbolt Display alleviates that problem partially as I can plug a few peripherals into the back of the Thunderbolt Display but to be fair, the MacMini isn't really aimed at pros running a bunch of monitors and other peripherals!

I will pass these observations on to Apple anyway.
