HDMi to dvi on new mac mini does not work

2 days ago , i recieved a Mac Mini M1.

HDMI to DVI did not work.

Called Support , told me to send M1 back. Monday I will get a new one.

Asked them , could it not be an overall problem. They laughed with me. On that time I had four people of support on the telephone, they all told me my M1 was defect. "Send it back" Now I read on the net that it is an overall problem. USB-c to DVI would work.

The support people did not know there job my believing. If I had bought my computer in the ALDI I could understand that they did not know, but for certified APPLE support people this is not done.

i try to get compensation I have to buy usb-c to dvi adapter.

I can not understand why apple did NOT test that ???????

Same problem here. I had a mac mini late 2014 and the HDMI to DVI adapter worked fine. Thought it would be an easy purchase. Just plug in the M1 Mini to the monitor, connect the keyboard, mouse and.....

Yup. Nothing. Black screen. No connection. Apple specs say "HDMI 2.0 display video output

  • Support for one display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz
  • DVI output using HDMI to DVI Adapter (sold separately)"

The Apple adapter does not work. So it's either a software problem or a hardware problem. Either way, the M1 mini is going back to the store until they resolve the problem. But this is definitely a known problem now.

And for 'den.thed" who suggested buying a new monitor, please send us all $200 each to buy a new monitor and we will gladly oblige. In the meantime, den.thed, acknowledge that Apple says, in writing, that the Mac Mini M1 will be compatible with DVI monitors and APPLE made a error. The consumer DID NOT make the error by having a dvi monitor. People don't buy Mac Mini's because money if falling out of their pockets. Shame on you for even posting that.

Did not get the replacement mini yet but they already prepared me for it probably would not fix the issue, Is is more about getting the unit back to the engineers so they can try to figure the problem out. And yes, is does mean redoing everything as a new machine. Have you or anyone installed the latest Big Sur update 11.1 and seen if this fixes the problem? I installed but have not had a chance to test yet...

Seriously? den.thed did nothing wrong! What they posted is factually true. There's no need for you to be so rude to him.

Going forward please remember that the good people who come here to try to help others do not get paid for it.

If you need to vent your frustration, please call Apple.

If you felt I was rude, that is your opinion. It was my opinion that den.thed's statement was rude and insensitive. And den.thed's statement was not factual, but an opinion. It did not take into account the finances of the person they were responding to and did not cite Apple as being responsible and doing there due diligence to prevent this problem in the first place. Mac Mini M1s don't work with ANY DVI monitor I know of at this point.

There is nothing wrong with using a DVI monitor in 2020. Den.thed, I believe, has high end DVI monitors. The factual part of this entire thread is that Apple cited that DVI works with he Mac Mini M1 and it does not. That is a fact.

And if you care to read the three pages of this thread, you will see that "I" along with everyone else, including den.thed, has volunteered their help and expertise into solving this problem. That all of us have expressed our frustration to Apple, and that we all own a Mac Mini M1 and would like this problem solved as soon as possible.

I am a person who believes we should take into account everyone's situation before suggesting they spend money to solve a problem that shouldn't be a problem in the first place. The original poster may well have the money to buy a new monitor. I do not know if they do or not. I do know that someone shouldn't have to pay for a company's mistake and should never be suggested to do so.

Thank you for your feedback, and I still fell as I cited above that den.thed's comment warranted my response and I do not regret a word of it.

If you would like to include your help, it would be much appreciated.

Sincerely,

Robert Manning, Jr.

I was just on the phone for the third time with Apple support. It seems that nothing has happened since my last call a couple of weeks ago. I had to tell half of what I have told earlier, then we tried a safe mode boot (with no help) and off it goes again to the "engineers". Didn't ask this time, but last time the support person found nothing about this problem in their system. Only some vague mention that use of USB-C is recommended. They'll contact me again next week...

Unfortunate but not surprising. There don't appear to be a lot of people with this issue. To consider a problem a priority, there needs to be hundreds or thousands of people with the problem. From this forum, looks like more like a few handfuls. So they either take their time, or it never gets solved. I have trouble tickets with Apple on my 2019 iMac for a different issue that are frozen in time, also for things that did not affect enough people for them to bother with..

Just unboxed my M1 mini and was surprised that it wouldn't turn on with my monitors. Tried it HDMI to DVI as well as through a USB-C dock and nothing lit up. Plugged it into my TV with HDMI, and sure enough, it worked.

Am I correct in my understanding that no HDMI adapters work and USB-C can only power one monitor? My problem is that I was planning to use 2 monitors, both of which are DVI, and from this thread, it seems like this is currently not possible with the M1 mini.

DVI is a thing of the past with the M1 as DVI is now 21 years old.

HDMI is supported but not via non-Apple adapters. The Apple USB-C to HDMI adaptor is supported.

The M1 supports using a HDMI 2.0 port, or Thunderbolt 3.

The M1 supports dual display extended, video mirroring, and Airplay mirroring.

One 4K display @ 60Hz. One 6K display @ 60 Hz. (Thunderbolt 3 only).

MyApple8... please stop leaving specs that everyone is aware of. The spec you conveniently left out is the one where it clearly states that the M1 supports DVI. So it doesn't matter how old the tech is. If Apple didn't want to support old tech, it would not have listed it on their spec sheet. And like raffwal said, the Apple DVI adapter does not work.

Yes, USB-C to DVI should work just fine. We are having the same problem with an old DVI monitor and our brand-new Mac mini. We tried two different (older) DVI monitors and several different HDMI to DVI adapters. We got Apple to replace our brand-new M1 Mac Mini with a new one. Nothing helped. But both monitors and both Mac Minis worked fine with a USB-C to DVI adapter. I don't like using up one of our two USB-C ports, but at least the monitor works.
