HDMi to dvi on new mac mini does not work

2 days ago , i recieved a Mac Mini M1.

HDMI to DVI did not work.

Called Support , told me to send M1 back. Monday I will get a new one.

Asked them , could it not be an overall problem. They laughed with me. On that time I had four people of support on the telephone, they all told me my M1 was defect. "Send it back" Now I read on the net that it is an overall problem. USB-c to DVI would work.

The support people did not know there job my believing. If I had bought my computer in the ALDI I could understand that they did not know, but for certified APPLE support people this is not done.

i try to get compensation I have to buy usb-c to dvi adapter.

I can not understand why apple did NOT test that ???????

Mac mini, macOS 10.15

Found a Solution.... The Star-tech powered 3 in 1 adapter worked! I was able to setup dual monitor DVI. one with a USB-C to DVI and one with the StarTech.com Travel A/V Adapter 3-in-1 HDMI to DisplayPort VGA or DVI - HDMI Adapter - 1920 x 1200 (HD2DPVGADVI). Since it is powered, it converts the signal. Powered the USB with a USB brick since I only get 2 on the Mac mini. Works great! Frustrating but now I get 2 monitors without using a USB video driver and don't have to replace my monitors and KVM.

Same problem here. I had a mac mini late 2014 and the HDMI to DVI adapter worked fine. Thought it would be an easy purchase. Just plug in the M1 Mini to the monitor, connect the keyboard, mouse and.....

Yup. Nothing. Black screen. No connection. Apple specs say "HDMI 2.0 display video output

  • Support for one display with up to 4K resolution at 60Hz
  • DVI output using HDMI to DVI Adapter (sold separately)"

The Apple adapter does not work. So it's either a software problem or a hardware problem. Either way, the M1 mini is going back to the store until they resolve the problem. But this is definitely a known problem now.

And for 'den.thed" who suggested buying a new monitor, please send us all $200 each to buy a new monitor and we will gladly oblige. In the meantime, den.thed, acknowledge that Apple says, in writing, that the Mac Mini M1 will be compatible with DVI monitors and APPLE made a error. The consumer DID NOT make the error by having a dvi monitor. People don't buy Mac Mini's because money if falling out of their pockets. Shame on you for even posting that.

The link will give you approximately 50 DVI monitors that also have an HDMI input. Let me know and I'll send you my Venmo link.

And next time you decide to apologize, make it sincere. The only way you would totally understand and feel our pain is if you actually owned an M1 and it didn't work as advertised.

So what is the general situation with this issue at the moment? I just received my M1 Mini today and bought a genuine Apple HDMI-DVI adapter only to find out that neither of my monitors work with the Mini. I don't wish to buy yet another adapter and have no plans to replace my old but good Barco monitor for this reason alone.

  • Is it a problem that involves all M1 Minis connected via HDMI-DVI to older monitors or only some Minis?
  • Does Apple really know about this or is the support still confused of lost?
  • Can and will Apple do something about this with a software update or is it something that is permanent? Because if it is, my Mini is going back.

100% Agree. On a computer with only 2 USB-C ports, I don't want to use one of them full time on the monitor when there is an otherwise-useless HSMI output port there as well.

Very bummed to have bought a new M1 Mac mini and have it not work with any of my monitors out of the box. Now I need to wait a few more days for a USB-C to DVI cable? Ugh. Terrible customer experience.

A couple days ago Apple collected extensive data on my defective mini M1. Not easy as the monitor is dark when replicating the problem. But Apple did a screen share and even tho I saw a dark screen, they could direct me to collect data. The engineers want my Mi back to have a look, so they are sending me a new unit by mail. I'll move my data to the new machine and send them the old unit. Unlikely the new M1 will solve the problem since they don't even know the cause yet. But a good sign they are trying. And agree, by fr the worst Apple experience ever,

"The reality is there may not be enough people with problems for Apple to address this issue... I'll keep getting thread updates and updating the OS, but can't spend more time on this. Not trying to be Debbie downer, but manage your expectations."

I couldn't agree more. My expectations are well managed. Still, it's worth the time to report it, because if enough people report it, they might pay attention.

Yeah the one I have tried was a cheap unbranded one that I originally bought to connect a new graphics card in my old Windows PC to an ancient Samsung DVI monitor. That works fine and the same cable works fine connecting the Samsung to my MacPro (2013) but it doesn't work on my MacMini M1. Is it something to do with the HDMI ports I wonder? On the MacPro the HDMI port is v1.4 and on the MacMini M1 it is v2.0

Apple just edited my last post and removed a YouTube link.

The video came from a guy that successfully added 6 displays to his Mac Mini.

Yes 6 displays.

Reason for deletion: "you used a link that wasn't directly related to the original post."

I do believe indeed that the link I posted was 100% related to the origin of this thread.

I don't know if that's a lame excuse to delete my link or they're just afraid for people to find out that you can add more that 1 monitor to the M1 with 3rd party adapters & hubs.

Yes, someone broke your "1 display limit" and made a tutorial :)

Hey APPLE; spend more time fixing this issue and less time censoring people here

I just spent 2 weeks quarantining and testing so I could visit my parents to set up their new MacMini and have run into this problem. It’s so frustrating. I am very unsatisfied that this problem has festered for a couple of months with no solution. Opening a case, but will probably just return this computer. They have nice monitors and I’m not returning them just because they don’t do HDMI. The adapter I have is Apple branded and I think came with the Mac mini that is being replaced by this new one,

mini works fine hooked up to their ancient (but hdmi available) television.

disappointed.
