Mac crashes frequently after Big Sur upgrade

Several days after I upgraded my iMac Pro 27" 2017 (3GHz 10-Core 64 RAM) to Big Sur, (11.0.1) it started crashing frequently (once or twice a day). It's not just one application; the whole computer crashes and restarts. It seems to happen at a random time; I cannot pinpoint any particular application or action that seems to trigger it.

I'm wondering if other users of iMac Pro are experiencing similar problems or if it's just me. Can anyone think of a reason that this is happening? Before Big Sur, the iMac Pro never used to crash at all, but now it's happening daily.

With the help of two senior Apple advisors, I narrowed the cause of original crashes down to some corruption in the System Library folder (not User Library folder) and its incompatibility with Firefox. I was getting ready for clean install in order to wipe the System Library folder clean and solve the problem.

Then Big Sur 11.1 came along, and I upgraded to it. Since the upgrade more than two weeks ago, it has not crashed once. So I assume the upgrade to 11.1 overwrote whatever corrupt file I had in my System Library folder and thereby solved the problem.

I realize that this is not the cause of other people's problems with frequent crashes after upgrade to Big Sur, because some report that clean install did not solve the problem and others report never using Firefox to begin with. So this is just a solution to MY particular problem of frequent crashes after Big Sur. I hope at least some other people experiencing the problem can solve it by upgrading to 11.1.

Thanks feardavs, however I have no malware and have ample space on my drive, have run first aid, updated to 11.2.1 and no fix!

Users shouldn't have to download 3rd party applications to fix Apple issues. This is still an issue for many unfortunately and Apple aren't taking notice, they have left me without a resolution after speaking with a supposed senior tech, he wouldn't even look at the crash log and basically said pay for business support as Apple Care don't care and we won't help you... :-/

Feb 12, 2021 6:19 PM in response to Community User

My MacBook Pro (16", 2019) has 64GB RAM, so again ample. Resetting PRAM does not fix the issue, sorry, was a first 101 step and also doing an SMC Reset. No luck! :-/. I'm a QA technician for the audio industry with over 20 years experience and in using Mac's on OS iterations since the days of yore, using such daily to test and qualify music softwares and plugins. Sadly it seemed "I knew more than the Apple rep", and this is an issue they need to fix and not leave customers unable to use the OS and work (particularly in such climate we live in with Covid and people working from home trying to pay the bills).

Edit; appreciate the reply though, more than Apple...

Before trying PRAM, i did a clean reinstall of the Big Sur macOS by making sure to wipe out any data on the hard drive, in other words do a clean install of big sur.

Just enter into recovery mode and proceed from there on.

Make sure after completing a fresh install, follow the PRAM hack should do the magic.

your best bet at this point honestly, take your mac to a nearby apple store by making an appointment with them and have them service it, thats if your still under manufacture warranty at least. Good luck and sorry with this experience you are facing.

Thanks but not gonna venture out to a store with covid around and waste my time and money also standing in front of someone or leaving personal stuff with them whilst I can't work. Apple need to recognise that users have this issue and need to release a fix. MacRumours' forum is now at 49 pages for this issue - https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-big-sur-11-0-bugs-and-bug-fixes.2242188/page-49

It's not just me or those in this thread or others posted here. We have reported to Feedback, been on phone calls and are just ignored.

Thank you for your replies, appreciated much, but it's Apple to address. PLEASE APPLE, YOUR UPDATE IS CRASHING MY COMPUTER!!! :-/

This problem drove me crazy!! Apple phone support suggestions did not work. My new mac mini machine just kept crashing. I took it in to repair. They had it for a week!! When I picked it up they said they had wiped it, reinstalled the OS, and "reset" it.

I got it home, restored from Time Machine (restoring the problem of course) and it started again within an hour! It was so maddening I had to work on my laptop. Thank goodness I had a backup.

I tried my mac min again about 48 hours ago. I had a feeling it may have had something to do with the display. I went to mission control and I had over 200 desktops! I have no idea how that happened! I deleted all but two and (fingers crossed!), haven't crashed in 48 hours. Plus, I installed the latest update, 11.2.2 and so far, so good.

I can't believe I went through 2 months of misery and the fix was so simple. I don't know if this was just a fluke, but if this works for someone else...you're welcome.

Same problem here. I have a brand new 2020 imac (Intel i7), and still get crashes every few days. I've unplugged all external devices, and even removed 2 of 4 added memory chips. Not as frequent as initial setup, since 11.3.1 update, but it's still happening. I don't use Firefox, and don't use any external monitors (or even a time machine drive—my important files are on backed up on various cloud drives, but still not ideal).

Anyone hear anything new on this issue? I'm holding off on doing a fresh install because I don't want to spend hours of my time if it's not a permanent solution.
