Mac crashes frequently after Big Sur upgrade

Several days after I upgraded my iMac Pro 27" 2017 (3GHz 10-Core 64 RAM) to Big Sur, (11.0.1) it started crashing frequently (once or twice a day). It's not just one application; the whole computer crashes and restarts. It seems to happen at a random time; I cannot pinpoint any particular application or action that seems to trigger it.

I'm wondering if other users of iMac Pro are experiencing similar problems or if it's just me. Can anyone think of a reason that this is happening? Before Big Sur, the iMac Pro never used to crash at all, but now it's happening daily.

With the help of two senior Apple advisors, I narrowed the cause of original crashes down to some corruption in the System Library folder (not User Library folder) and its incompatibility with Firefox. I was getting ready for clean install in order to wipe the System Library folder clean and solve the problem.

Then Big Sur 11.1 came along, and I upgraded to it. Since the upgrade more than two weeks ago, it has not crashed once. So I assume the upgrade to 11.1 overwrote whatever corrupt file I had in my System Library folder and thereby solved the problem.

I realize that this is not the cause of other people's problems with frequent crashes after upgrade to Big Sur, because some report that clean install did not solve the problem and others report never using Firefox to begin with. So this is just a solution to MY particular problem of frequent crashes after Big Sur. I hope at least some other people experiencing the problem can solve it by upgrading to 11.1.

During my first install of BS my Wi-Fi was interrupted for a short while, once connected again it still downloaded and installed but I noticed a clear difference in the possible corrupted BS and the new install. Until now no issues, I’m not a computer geek but you might give it a try considering the current state of your MacBook.

Big Sur is the worst ****** (for the sake of not swearing in public...) I have ever seen in my career. Systematic crashes daily at least once and most often multiple times. This mostly happened when I plugged to my hub but Big Sur was not satisfied with that and now crashes even on standalone. Bravo MacOS developers....

This is happening to my colleagues too. There has clearly been little to zero testing on this release. Gone are the days where MacOs were considered super stable...

I send my daily crash reports along with some colourful words in the hope that someone will see this but most likely it goes to some trash @ Apple?

Hopefully someone at Apple will read this! FIX BIG SUR!!!

2017 iMac Pro, 3.2GHz intel Xeon W… getting crashes multiple times a day since upgrading to Big Sur. I finally just reinstalled ( from scratch… erased the drives and installed clean, NOT from a backup) and it didn’t make a difference. Definitely not upgrading my MacBook pro now.

My iMac 2015 was fine for a while when I reset the SMC snd PRAM but it started crashing again. I tried my original method of disconnecting my monitors and drives but it still crashes. even if I reset the PRAM without anything connected.

i just hope the next OS fixes this as Apple has no plans to update Big Sur except for Security purposes.

I've already had two crashes today (in a little over an hour). I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure it happens at times where there is a spike in resource usage.

Same here. Started crashing last year when I updated to Catalina. The issue was never solved. Had to buy new iMac. When I updated to Big Sur two days ago the exact same thing began happening.

This hasn't occured in a few days so I believe it has been fixed, perhaps it was Firefox, I will keep that in mind in the future.

I have a ticket open with Apple about this I have given them the reports that Big Sur generated. I am hoping what I gave them helps speed up the process of generating a fix.

Mine keeps crashing with memory all used up. I have iMAC (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, 2017. In fact, as typing this in on iPad Safari has quite again! Nothing else new installed except Big Sur upgrade.

Zoid85 i have two external displays connected, are you saying this appears to be the cause of the crashes?

I've disconnected external monitors and all other external peripherals. That did not solve the problem for me.
