I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it constantly dims. I made sure the Automatic button was off, it still dims. I went to answer the phone and it had dimmed itself down to an almost completely dark screen. I am constantly having to reset the brightness back to where I can see the screen. Any "bright" ideas?

So.. I had my apple appointment yesterday, I made sure to video the screen dimming too before I went in, I showed them the videos and explained the issue I was having, to which they admitted was very strange, they said it’s most like software based to which I agreed, but i said, what are you going to do about it, to which they responded, there’s nothing we can do, other than try a screen replacement, so I said go ahead. Now, to do the screen replacement they have to plug the device into a diagnostic machine which will look for a fault and then allow them to do a repair, so they did this, and to both mine and the employees surprised, there were 5 faults with the device! It failed the screen test, the face I.D test, ambient lighting test and two other which I forget, but this meant that they couldn’t do a screen replacement as there were many more issues, so their solution… they straight up replaced my device there and then in the shop! I was gob smacked at this point as usual you’d hear horror stories of how they will blame you and send you away! So far it’s been 24hrs, no screen dim! I’ve even done the things I did before to make it happen, and nothing! So for now, I am happy, I hope this device continues to perform correctly and if I do experience any issues I will be sure to note them here!
my advise, video your issue on another device and head to your nearest apple store!
I have gotten a replacement and it does the same thing, im pretty sure its a power save/heat issue, but theres no options to disable it either
Check out the post 3 or 4 threads above yours I done it and my phone does not dim anymore

I don't have a fix but I have an update. I just cleaned the devices memory with CPU-X and voila, the screen brightened right up.
I did turn all buttons off and only used the increase contrast… pretty messed up that we have even find ways to make a $1300 phone wirk
There is no solution, no setting works, the Apple technicians are aware of the issue and there is nothing the can do. Just a bad phone hardware design.
It's not an issue to them, that's why. It's a feature to Apple. It's obviously done to protect the battery and screen from heat damage. But it makes the phone unusable.

This must be some random thing then....my phone screen goes black when someone is calling now, and touching the screen will not open the phone...or the phone rings and all the apps are closed, nothing to do to answer. APPLE, what the heck is going on with your software? My iphone 12 pro max works with apps but it sucks when used as a phone?? This feels like Blackberry and Windows xp all over again....sucky software and bad Apple customer support nowadays...
I also got the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it’s very expensive to have problems, I have the same issue with the brightness, in my case I make sure nothing is enabled like white point reduce, dark mode, Night shift, automatic, True Tone, and all the settings that can cause this and still happening, after some time it get the brightness back again sometimes more sometimes less but it’s frustrating. A lot of settings for the brightness, it was better on the older models when we were in control of the screen now it does what it want.
Every time Apple releases new version, there are always a little bit of learning curve. Which is a bit painful. But this community always resolved any issues I have had. I would suggest to be patience and follow any solutions provided out there. 👍
Having same issue...turned off auto brightness in both spots..and battery is not on low power either and i can actually watch the brightness slide back to left before my eyes.....i then slide it again two or three times...still moves on its own...until i slide it and hold it for about 10 seconds....this is crazy...I'm an electronics tech and by all things i can see there is no adjustment for this...not sure if it's a hardware or software issue
I had an 8 plus and I upgrade to iPhone 12 max due to the 8 plus having constant dimming issues. Now my 12 pro max does the same thing ,like seriously for 1100$ Can’t get a proper working phone? Apple needs to correct this issue and stop directing their customers to settings and turning off auto dim because that clearly isn’t the issue for the majority of the customers. I would have never purchased a new iPhone I’d I knew it would be the same **** issue.
Yes my phone is getting hotter every day now. I can barely touch it just watching a you tube video. This is bs.! I gotta get it looked at I guess. I ordered a cooling fan w generator on Amazon but seriously I shouldn’t have to do this ?!
My screen keeps dimming all the time! Auto brightness off, True Tone off and yet it still dims, literally 15/20 minutes of use and it’s like the phone can’t cool itself so it just dims the screen, this is awful! It’s the worst of any phone I’ve used for overheating while literally just scrolling Facebook and this isn’t even with the charger plugged in! Just natural use! I’ve had the iPhone 12 Pro Max now since December, so couple software updates and the issue still persists.. what’s the solution? It’s not like I can return a contracted phone and this screen dim sometimes makes the phone unusable! Not happy at all, I left Samsung because of their rubbish exynos chipset and now I’ve got an iPhone that you could cook an egg on the back of, what’s going on??
