iPhone 12 pro max keeps dimming

I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it constantly dims. I made sure the Automatic button was off, it still dims. I went to answer the phone and it had dimmed itself down to an almost completely dark screen. I am constantly having to reset the brightness back to where I can see the screen. Any "bright" ideas?

SOLVED - iPhone 12 Max Pro Dimming.

A non-apple case causes it to overheat!

My iPhone was fine for two years and I switched from the Apple purchased case that I bought at the Apple Store for a non-Apple case to enjoy a new color. Didn’t think about it but started having problems with my phone dimming.

It was constant if I was googling or reading texts etc it would toggle up and toggle down from bright to dim so I could barely read it. It was ridiculous.

Tried everything the Internet suggested. Turning it off helped but that was only because it was cooling it off. It didn’t solve it. Changing any and all settings did absolutely nothing.

Read a post that mentioned they thought it was an overheating issue. Remembered that I had just purchased a new case before this started. Put back on my Apple purchased case. Voila. No issue for a whole month. SOLVED

As of several days ago I’m suddenly having the same issue daily.

All of my “auto” settings are set to off.

It only happens when I’m playing a game which has never caused it to happen before in the 3 years I’ve played the game.

The phone heats up even a little bit and my screen dims. Sliding the brightness doesn’t do S@&$. Only after I exit from the app and wait ten minutes does my screen come back on.

Talked to Apple Tech’s useless “did you try this, that and the other thing” pitch for twenty minutes and still don’t have an answer.

I’m in the tech industry, been here for 26 years, was a rep for Android at launch… I know my way around electronics. I own a security and surveillance company.

Apple knows D@&@ well what the issue is but is more interested in moving more product than they are in support for existing users. With so many users having the same issue, it can’t just be a coincidence, it is a hardware flaw. The fact that this literally only started happening to me after 7 months of iPhone ownership makes me question using their products much longer. My Android NEVER did this kind of thing to me.

Just like to add my iPhone 12 pro Max dims all the time still after trying everything mentioned here and also a few other things. Now the battery goes flat a lot quicker and have the same problem outside in the sun for a couple of minutes or in the car driving and the screen dims. It seems to do it in 2 stages one where you can faintly see what's going on and then it plunges into total darkness and is un-usable. I have put all of the settings back to preserve my battery and now have to treat the iphone like a high maintenance princess. Not happy. What to do! Sell it on eBay and buy another phone that is where I am heading! The carrier I am with has offered me a good deal with the Samsung S22 Ultra 512GB

ATTENTION APPLE!!!!

iPhone 12 Pro Max 512 GB, IOS 15.5. I have the exact same issue. I have checked the setting in Accessibility Display & Text, [OFF]. Then I checked again in Display & Brightness it’s about 85~90/95%. I’m visually impaired and must have it at this setting for me to be able to read most all things. Thing of this is my son that has an 13 Pro Max 512 also with 15.5 has the exact same issue! The back of the phone across the upper back side between the camera lens and the left edge of the phone with the phone facing you gets really hot.

This is a bug an apple refuses to do anything about it. I took my phone to the store and they told me factory reset it and set it up as a brand new phone, which means I would basically lose everything on it because every time I restore it when I factory reset it it continues to have the same problem, I have seen a correlation between when it gets hot and when I’m using it in my car, especially under CarPlay, but I’ve had three iPhones now every year I get a new one and keep doing it. They tell me there’s some application on it. that’s doing it, but they can’t tell me what application even if I close everything out it still does it. It is the most annoying thing ever.
