iPhone 12 pro max keeps dimming

I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it constantly dims. I made sure the Automatic button was off, it still dims. I went to answer the phone and it had dimmed itself down to an almost completely dark screen. I am constantly having to reset the brightness back to where I can see the screen. Any "bright" ideas?

So.. I had my apple appointment yesterday, I made sure to video the screen dimming too before I went in, I showed them the videos and explained the issue I was having, to which they admitted was very strange, they said it’s most like software based to which I agreed, but i said, what are you going to do about it, to which they responded, there’s nothing we can do, other than try a screen replacement, so I said go ahead. Now, to do the screen replacement they have to plug the device into a diagnostic machine which will look for a fault and then allow them to do a repair, so they did this, and to both mine and the employees surprised, there were 5 faults with the device! It failed the screen test, the face I.D test, ambient lighting test and two other which I forget, but this meant that they couldn’t do a screen replacement as there were many more issues, so their solution… they straight up replaced my device there and then in the shop! I was gob smacked at this point as usual you’d hear horror stories of how they will blame you and send you away! So far it’s been 24hrs, no screen dim! I’ve even done the things I did before to make it happen, and nothing! So for now, I am happy, I hope this device continues to perform correctly and if I do experience any issues I will be sure to note them here!

my advise, video your issue on another device and head to your nearest apple store!

I am currently in Thailand on business. I purchased the iPhone 12 pro max for the camera and to be able to use it to take photo's for my work. As it has turned out I get my staff to use their Phones to do what i need to do as the iPhone is useless.

1) The ability to take close up photo's that are clear and focused is non existent. (admittingly, there has been some software updates that have improved the camera with close ups since the purchase nearly a year ago)

2) The weather is hot and humid in Thailand when I take the photo's outside in the sun, I can successfully take 2 or 3 photo's and then the screen dims so much that I cannot see to take photos or even select menu's. (I have recently ventured back to cold and wet Melbourne and I was totally unaware of the "auto brightness" in the accessibility under display and text,

I will try this in a couple of weeks when I am back at work, but if it doesn't work it will be finally time to switch from Apple phones. I have been a loyal customer since iPhone 3. If it can't do the job why support it! 3 of my staff members have androids. The Samsung S22 Ultra, has a much better macro ability and also has a 100 x zoom. Try and take a photo of the moon with your iPhone 12 pro Max. I just can't do it its all blurred and the colours are wrong.. In Thailand there is some lovely red moons at night time with the iPhone a photo of this comes out orange and blurred. A macro of a plant leaf or an insect on a plant leaf is impossible. Very upset! The iPhone 8 I had actually took better macro's. The iphone 12 ProMax does take beautiful clear photo's of scenes, etc and it has some wonderful facilities with pano, portrait, etc. Its time for apple to stop stuffing around and add macro to the tabs in the camera!!

As of several days ago I’m suddenly having the same issue daily.

All of my “auto” settings are set to off.

It only happens when I’m playing a game which has never caused it to happen before in the 3 years I’ve played the game.

The phone heats up even a little bit and my screen dims. Sliding the brightness doesn’t do S@&$. Only after I exit from the app and wait ten minutes does my screen come back on.

Talked to Apple Tech’s useless “did you try this, that and the other thing” pitch for twenty minutes and still don’t have an answer.

I’m in the tech industry, been here for 26 years, was a rep for Android at launch… I know my way around electronics. I own a security and surveillance company.

Apple knows D@&@ well what the issue is but is more interested in moving more product than they are in support for existing users. With so many users having the same issue, it can’t just be a coincidence, it is a hardware flaw. The fact that this literally only started happening to me after 7 months of iPhone ownership makes me question using their products much longer. My Android NEVER did this kind of thing to me.

Just like to add my iPhone 12 pro Max dims all the time still after trying everything mentioned here and also a few other things. Now the battery goes flat a lot quicker and have the same problem outside in the sun for a couple of minutes or in the car driving and the screen dims. It seems to do it in 2 stages one where you can faintly see what's going on and then it plunges into total darkness and is un-usable. I have put all of the settings back to preserve my battery and now have to treat the iphone like a high maintenance princess. Not happy. What to do! Sell it on eBay and buy another phone that is where I am heading! The carrier I am with has offered me a good deal with the Samsung S22 Ultra 512GB

ATTENTION APPLE!!!!

iPhone 12 Pro Max 512 GB, IOS 15.5. I have the exact same issue. I have checked the setting in Accessibility Display & Text, [OFF]. Then I checked again in Display & Brightness it’s about 85~90/95%. I’m visually impaired and must have it at this setting for me to be able to read most all things. Thing of this is my son that has an 13 Pro Max 512 also with 15.5 has the exact same issue! The back of the phone across the upper back side between the camera lens and the left edge of the phone with the phone facing you gets really hot.

This is a bug an apple refuses to do anything about it. I took my phone to the store and they told me factory reset it and set it up as a brand new phone, which means I would basically lose everything on it because every time I restore it when I factory reset it it continues to have the same problem, I have seen a correlation between when it gets hot and when I’m using it in my car, especially under CarPlay, but I’ve had three iPhones now every year I get a new one and keep doing it. They tell me there’s some application on it. that’s doing it, but they can’t tell me what application even if I close everything out it still does it. It is the most annoying thing ever.
