I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it constantly dims. I made sure the Automatic button was off, it still dims. I went to answer the phone and it had dimmed itself down to an almost completely dark screen. I am constantly having to reset the brightness back to where I can see the screen. Any "bright" ideas?

So.. I had my apple appointment yesterday, I made sure to video the screen dimming too before I went in, I showed them the videos and explained the issue I was having, to which they admitted was very strange, they said it’s most like software based to which I agreed, but i said, what are you going to do about it, to which they responded, there’s nothing we can do, other than try a screen replacement, so I said go ahead. Now, to do the screen replacement they have to plug the device into a diagnostic machine which will look for a fault and then allow them to do a repair, so they did this, and to both mine and the employees surprised, there were 5 faults with the device! It failed the screen test, the face I.D test, ambient lighting test and two other which I forget, but this meant that they couldn’t do a screen replacement as there were many more issues, so their solution… they straight up replaced my device there and then in the shop! I was gob smacked at this point as usual you’d hear horror stories of how they will blame you and send you away! So far it’s been 24hrs, no screen dim! I’ve even done the things I did before to make it happen, and nothing! So for now, I am happy, I hope this device continues to perform correctly and if I do experience any issues I will be sure to note them here!
my advise, video your issue on another device and head to your nearest apple store!
Having same problem with iphone 12.
I bought this phone 2 weeks ago and it is having these problems.
I also went to the local ishop in El Salvador, they told me it could take around 2 weeks to fix. I would be without a cellphone for all that time. This is a very bad experience for an expensive phone that is not working, they should replace it inmediately
Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to fix this issue. I read and then tried all of the recommendations/suggestions here but my phone must be defective so I continue to turn the light back up throughout the day. If you happen to find something that works for your phone, would you please post it here?

I agree completely, whilst some of these ridiculously complicated adjustments to settings help marginally, they don’t fix or get rid of the problem. The 12 series is basically a rushed out phone that performs like a bag of spanners!
Still haven’t read how to fix the dimmer that’s only works 1/3rd of the way. It will take the phone to total black as if the phone is telling me…..” be satisfied with 1/3rd brightness or I’ll dim the entire screen…. Do we understand each other?”

Problem is that Apple was well aware of this at least since the 7plus and iOS updates failed to rectify it. It had become so annoying I switched to Samsung and have no issues. Shame because Apple lost a customer
All Apple has to do is address the issues with their overheats, add some decent cameras, and improve their battery life instead of changing a phone by 1mm in width or some other insignificant cosmetic improvement and then brand it with a new iPhone number. I went to the Samsung Galaxy, albeit a pain with certain functions, it has exceptional screen resolution and battery life.

I have an iPhone 12 max and live in the Middle Easy. Whenever I go outside my iPhone keeps dimming to the point I can no longer read the screen. Tried everything I could find anywhere and nothing works. So annoying!
Same problem here. makes the phone unusable when you live in a warm climate.
Why doesn't Apple use CPU throttling instead of screen dimming? I would prefer to a have a phone that is a bit slower but with a screen I can read.
Maybe the design flaw is related to the size of the screen and the battery usage to power it. It would explain how the issue appear only on the largest iphone. Therefore the cpu reduction would have a limited impact and would require such a throttling that would prevent normal operation.
Same problem here. Went to Genius bar twice and they refuse to replace or repair the phone. They say it’s “normal” thing. What a deception! This is clearly not Apple quality. They should fix this to all 12 Pro Max users… It does that to affect me in my work as I am a professional Drone pilot.
Same! After many many complaints, chats and trips to the apple store they replaced my phone. My previous phone only did it outside. Now this replacement does it inside at room temp. I've turned off every single setting that has ever been suggested. Im ready to trade in for another samsung. Wish I had never moved from Samsung to Iphone.
Can anyone confirm if this is a heat issue, or a “pre-programmed” dimming problem hardwired in to stop the phone from actually heating up… in a dim room if I tilt the phone toward a light source there is very slight dimming; when tilted back away, the screen lightens. This is when the phone is not hot…
Has anyone found a fix for this? Same problem screen dims on its own I have all settings turned off or on as suggested l. Seems like some apps use more CPU power like Nextdoor which cause screen to start to dim. Apple should recall 12 pro max.
Well great. I’m still making payments on my phone and just this week I noticed it seemed to be going darker while using it. I thought I was seeing things. Then I caught it first hand and realized what was happening. It seemed as if it was going in the stages of “sleep mode” except not as dark. Then it would brighten back up suddenly. Ughhhh. This angers me. Pay all that money and it messes up before you’ve had it a year.
My eyesight has gone south due to diabetes, which is why I upgraded to a larger screen. I wish Apple would have let us know as when it goes dim, I can’t really see it that well. I do appreciate your insistence to find an answer, I’ve been trying to figure this out for months and tech support has been pretty worthless.
anyone know if the 13 has the same problems? Maybe someone can make a fan case to cool the phones? 🤷🏻♂️
