iPhone 12 pro max keeps dimming

I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it constantly dims. I made sure the Automatic button was off, it still dims. I went to answer the phone and it had dimmed itself down to an almost completely dark screen. I am constantly having to reset the brightness back to where I can see the screen. Any "bright" ideas?

So.. I had my apple appointment yesterday, I made sure to video the screen dimming too before I went in, I showed them the videos and explained the issue I was having, to which they admitted was very strange, they said it’s most like software based to which I agreed, but i said, what are you going to do about it, to which they responded, there’s nothing we can do, other than try a screen replacement, so I said go ahead. Now, to do the screen replacement they have to plug the device into a diagnostic machine which will look for a fault and then allow them to do a repair, so they did this, and to both mine and the employees surprised, there were 5 faults with the device! It failed the screen test, the face I.D test, ambient lighting test and two other which I forget, but this meant that they couldn’t do a screen replacement as there were many more issues, so their solution… they straight up replaced my device there and then in the shop! I was gob smacked at this point as usual you’d hear horror stories of how they will blame you and send you away! So far it’s been 24hrs, no screen dim! I’ve even done the things I did before to make it happen, and nothing! So for now, I am happy, I hope this device continues to perform correctly and if I do experience any issues I will be sure to note them here!

my advise, video your issue on another device and head to your nearest apple store!

The automatic option in the display settings is NOT for the auto brightness, it’s if for dark mode, it will automatically switch between light and dark mode depending on time of day.. the ONLY auto brightness setting is in accessibility-display and text size.. the issue is also not that the phones brightness bar drops by itself, it is that the brightness drops meanwhile the bar shows it as 100%, when you move the brightness bar to adjust, it does nothing until lower than 40%.

Im on my third 12 pro max now, all replaced under warranty, the first replacement was solely due to this issue, then my replacement device had the same issue, plus the cameras and flash would freeze all the time.. my new replacement still has the screen issue but the cameras are fine, I’m reluctant to get it replaced again as they is clearly a widespread issue on all the devices. Apple need to sort their sh*t out because this is an absolutely pi*s take for an £1100 phone!!

Yes, this is happening to me, a brand new iPhone 12 pro max, but I noticed it happens when the phone gets warm from use.

For example, whenever I play a game that depends on the phone's graphics, my phone will heat up some after I start playing and then the screen dims according to how hot the phone gets.

It sucks, I do not know how to fix it. But I understand why it happens.

I try to keep all other apps closed, and remove my case so the phone can get cool air to it faster. Then eventually it goes back to normal.

I’ve mentioned this several times here but I guess not everyone is having the same luck. The last IOS update 14.6 fixed 90% of my dimming issues. I’ve even turned auto dimming back on. Dimming was out of control before the update. I guess it didn’t help everyone. Every once and awhile I catch it dimming but nothing like before.

Gives me hope that updates can correct the issue..

Hey Frank, indeed an annoying super bright screen in darkness and muddy dark in bright surroundings. I seemed to have some luck jostling around some options in the accessibility and display & brightness menus, but I realize it’s all to do with the iPhone 12 heating up. Once this happens the screen dims, probably so as not to cook the phone (not that apple would admit this). Once the iPhone cools down it returns to full brightness, at least in my experience. I think while trying different options in the menu my phone cooled down and brightness returned. I just mis associated the brighter screen with menu changes…

This is a design issue with the iPhone, and I have the 12 Pro Max, 512 GB. Changing the settings doesn't provide a permanent solution and several options have been proposed on this board. What does work for me is to simply reboot the phone and then I'm immediately back to a nice bright screen. But, why should this happen as the phone is just as warm / hot as it was 20 seconds prior to the reboot, and therefore it should boot into the prior dimmed state, but it doesn't, and it stays in a nice bright state for hours most times. This suggests to me that a software update to the IOS may be a solution. A reboot is always a good idea every few days or so, and for me, this is my fix to this issue., though I do it more regularly to counter the auto screen dimming annoyance. Heat is always the biggest enemy for electronics.

Ofcourse I don't see any Apple specialist stating this problem as well known. It has nothing to do with settings. The 12 Pro (max) overheats and Apple has included as a fix the follwing: takiing down the brightness and locking it there until the phone cools down in order to prevent hardware failure!

I had to sell a 1.5k phone because Apple won't recognise this as a hardware issue and compensate its clients like Samsung has done in the past.

If you are a "lite" user, you might never face the problem but...

If you record long videos, play heavy games or work the phone for a long time in the sun... Sorry... there is NO fix. It's a hardware issue!
