I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it constantly dims. I made sure the Automatic button was off, it still dims. I went to answer the phone and it had dimmed itself down to an almost completely dark screen. I am constantly having to reset the brightness back to where I can see the screen. Any "bright" ideas?

So.. I had my apple appointment yesterday, I made sure to video the screen dimming too before I went in, I showed them the videos and explained the issue I was having, to which they admitted was very strange, they said it’s most like software based to which I agreed, but i said, what are you going to do about it, to which they responded, there’s nothing we can do, other than try a screen replacement, so I said go ahead. Now, to do the screen replacement they have to plug the device into a diagnostic machine which will look for a fault and then allow them to do a repair, so they did this, and to both mine and the employees surprised, there were 5 faults with the device! It failed the screen test, the face I.D test, ambient lighting test and two other which I forget, but this meant that they couldn’t do a screen replacement as there were many more issues, so their solution… they straight up replaced my device there and then in the shop! I was gob smacked at this point as usual you’d hear horror stories of how they will blame you and send you away! So far it’s been 24hrs, no screen dim! I’ve even done the things I did before to make it happen, and nothing! So for now, I am happy, I hope this device continues to perform correctly and if I do experience any issues I will be sure to note them here!
my advise, video your issue on another device and head to your nearest apple store!
The root cause of the screen dimming seems to be when the device is overheating.
I also tried to put back the Apple case I had (I was using Peak Design's case) and there were far and few overheats and screen doesn't dim anymore!
It just sucks to not be able to use Peak Design's. I invested on other accessories as well.
I’ve had the issue with the screen dimming for about three years now maybe longer after an update I believe going from 13 to 14. I’ve gone round and round with Apple even the iPhone 14 had the issue. I cannot say on the 15. I just installed three days ago IOS 17.0.2. It’s funny how the non-issue that never existed has been completely resolved and a phone that would dim itself 1020 times a day. Is it 100% brightness all the time. SMH
Same here. In Settings/Battery - turn off the low power mode switch. That did it for me.
Go to Settings/Accessibility/Face ID & Attention. Is Attention Aware Features off? It defaults to On.
If you haven’t done so, go to Settings > Accessibility>Display. Scroll to the bottom of the page and you will see Auto Brightness. Turn it off.

If those features are turned on your screen will automatically dim. To check if Auto-Brightness is turned on, go to Settings > Accessibility > Displays & Text Size > Auto-Brightness.

i had the same problem, this worked for me: Try a Force Restart
On your phone: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.
Update: As a hail Mary last ditch effort, I tried one last thing that someone mentioned very briefly on this forum, to do a hard restart by pressing up volume once, down volume once and then press and hold the right side button until the Apple icon appears. So far, it’s been three hours since doing this and my screen has remained bright! Wow. It may or may not stay fixed but Apple tech support may want to take note of that one.
Problem solved! If you’ve changed all your settings and it’s still having same problem, doing a hard restart/reboot will defiantly work. Press up volume once, then down volume once, then hold the button or right down until Apple logo appears.
Go to settings, scroll down to brightness and display where it lists auto-dim and true tone. Turn them both off and then on this page scroll down to accessibility, once on this screen scroll down to auto dim and turn it off on this page as well. This should solve the issue.
This happened times to me in only the 3 months of having my iPhone 12 Pro Max... There is no solution as the this only happens when you is consuming a lot of battery at once and the phone overheats, it is programmed to auto dim to low to cool the phone a bit. Resting your phone for some minutes will cool the phone and dim will go back to normal
Ive tried everything posted here, finally out of luck, changed my screen view setting from zoomed to standard, thus restarting ( reverting back to the original display settings) the phone, potentially resetting PRAM.
This resolved my problem. 1 hour so far all good.
Make sure you go to both places to turn off Auto Brightness 1)settings then 2)accessibility then 3)Display &Text size and scroll down to the bottom of the page and set Auto Brightness to OFF setting. There’s 2 places to adjust auto brightness 1)Settings then to 2)Display & Brightness then to 3)Appearance and turn Automatic to OFF setting
Hi, I know this is an old thread, but still a commmon problem.
The problem is heat 100% as the phone gets hotter due to both apps and sun heat the screen will dim.
simple solution, but your self a silicon based case. Silicon is specifically used to conduct heat away from the phone, most cases insulate the phone so the only surface for the heat to escape is the screen.
You will find the phone screen will dim so much makes is unusable.
a simple test take it out of the case, you will feel the heat hold the phone from the bottom and notice the screen return to normal as the heat conducts into the air .

There is another auto brightness setting when you go into ACCESSIBITY that you need to turn off as well. This fixed my issue.
