I have the iPhone 12 Pro Max and it constantly dims. I made sure the Automatic button was off, it still dims. I went to answer the phone and it had dimmed itself down to an almost completely dark screen. I am constantly having to reset the brightness back to where I can see the screen. Any "bright" ideas?

So.. I had my apple appointment yesterday, I made sure to video the screen dimming too before I went in, I showed them the videos and explained the issue I was having, to which they admitted was very strange, they said it’s most like software based to which I agreed, but i said, what are you going to do about it, to which they responded, there’s nothing we can do, other than try a screen replacement, so I said go ahead. Now, to do the screen replacement they have to plug the device into a diagnostic machine which will look for a fault and then allow them to do a repair, so they did this, and to both mine and the employees surprised, there were 5 faults with the device! It failed the screen test, the face I.D test, ambient lighting test and two other which I forget, but this meant that they couldn’t do a screen replacement as there were many more issues, so their solution… they straight up replaced my device there and then in the shop! I was gob smacked at this point as usual you’d hear horror stories of how they will blame you and send you away! So far it’s been 24hrs, no screen dim! I’ve even done the things I did before to make it happen, and nothing! So for now, I am happy, I hope this device continues to perform correctly and if I do experience any issues I will be sure to note them here!
my advise, video your issue on another device and head to your nearest apple store!

My problem was zoom was turned on with low light settings. Accessibility-zoom- zoom filter-none
The hard reset did it for me. It was the only solution that actually worked. It’s only been an hour but…
Turn off your reduce white point after all the other adjustments and it will work fine.
I have exactly the same issue. As soon as the phone cools all is fine.
I’m running IOS16 beta. Definitely an over heating issue.
I too have noticed when browsing a lot, the phone heated up and it auto dimmed despite have auto dim turned off in both places and True Tone off too. So is it a heat issue? It’s so bad, the brightness control slider doesn’t brighten the screen at all from the two thirds of the top of slider control bar.
How many time do we have to say we have done this!!!!!! Read the whole discussion before putting forward your useless and irrelevant fixes!!!!! This is an issue with the phone getting hot and the screen dimming!!! The brightness still shows it is turned all the way up!!! No one is having an issue turn off auto-dim!!!! ****
it honestly barely happens for me but when it does it’s always when my phone is hot, at a percentage of less than 20% battery life, and when its plugged in while i’m using it. lol it sounds bizarre but i feel like it shouldn’t happen at all.
My 12 Max Pro was going crazy with the dimming issue. I’d be in direct sunlight and it would dim to the point I couldn’t read the screen. The brightness slide did nothing. The issue improved significantly after the most recent iOS update 14.6. It still occasionally dims but nothing like it did prior. At least I know it can be effected with software updates. Hopefully it gets fully addressed soon.
I found a fix!!! Really easy and works 100% of the time!
Problem: The iPhone screen dims due to poor heat dissipation/design flaw.
Solution: Attach an ice pack to the back of the iPhone.

No worries! It's an intern thingy that adjusts your brightness automatic even if your "auto brightness" is turned off it still dims the screen this is because there are apps playing in the background and when using the iphone it will dim automatically this is to save your battery's life.

“Reduce white point” will help some with this random setting turned on, but most of us are struggling with screen brightness with all settings under Accessibility & Display and Brightness turned off unfortunately… I’ve tried a number of changes that seemed to work, only to have the issue resurface when I’m in bright conditions… try using the screen in bright sunlight and see what happens!
Hello CP 1688. I am a owner of the iphone 12 pro max as well. I bought this and paid a fortune because i needed a ‘professional working phone’ to take pictures and videos out in construction job sites where outside temp is over 95 degrees. As soon as i start using the camera app the screen dims way low. Too dark to see anything. I followed all the suggestions made on this forum. The two auto screen brightness turned off. The reduce white point turned off the true tone turned off. Still dims. I am guessing apple built a safety mechanism in place to keep the screen from using its fullest brightness in order to spare the battery when it is hot outside is that right? Pro max users need to be able to use the phone outside in the sun too. That is why this is a ‘pro’ device. Please advise.
That was happening to my iPhone 12 Pro Max.. here’s the trick, settings, accessibility, display and Text, hit increase contrast.. bingo, no more doming! Can’t tell you why but it works great! I did this last week and haven’t had an issue since. Look at the photo below:
