Big Sur printer queue does not load

Yesterday I received a new Mac mini M1. As part of configuring it, I needed it to see my printer (Brother HL-L2351DW). Because I use an iPhone for my internet connectivity, there is no stand alone AP/router. The printer exists in it's own SSID. To make the printer visible, I had to enable legacy devices under Wifi in Network Settings. The printer then was visible, and I changed Wifi to the Printer's SSID, then switched to Printer Setup and added it as an AirPrint device. Opened a word processing app, and sent a document to the printer. The Printer Setup part of System Preferences has a button to open the Printer Queue. I have done this on previous versions of OS X with no issue. On Big Sur, it is not working, the Print Queue for that printer does not appear on the screen, but it does appear in the list of Recent Applications (perhaps it is invisible). The printer does function however. Normally, because I have to switch Wifi between the AP and the printer's SSID, I keep the Print Queue on hold until I am ready to print. Since I cannot open the Print Queue I am unable to do this, so I'm flying blind. If someone can check Radar to see if this is a known issue, and enter it if not, that would be helpful. I am on macOS 11.0.0, and have not yet had the guts to try 11.0.1.

TIA

This may be because the application installed to operate the queue has not been flagged as "Open using Rosetta" so on the M1 CPU this Intel app fails as macOS seems not to automatically recognise it. I had this with the (very old) drivers for my (very, very old) HP LaserJet P1102w. Every other printer feature worked but I just couldn't look at the queue.

Fix that worked for me:

  • Open Finder and click on the "Go" menu.
  • Hold down the Option key and "Library" should appear.
  • Navigate to Library/Printers and you should see your printer's application.
  • Right click on it and select "Get Info".
  • You should see "Open using Rosetta" and if it's not ticked tick it.

Hello, I am experiencing the same problem. I just got my Mac book air with Mac OS Big Sur and I have updated it to the most recent 11.1 version. I am trying to print on my Canon MX860 and I have added it as a printer and when I go to System Preferences, it appears as a recognized printer. I am using a USB cable to connect it. Print preview appears, but when I go to bring something, the printer icon appears for a second, and then goes away and the item does not print. I have ticket the Open with Rosetta button as suggested, but my problem still persists.

not doing that. again. every release of macOS since way back seems to require some hours of intervention to get a Canon printer to work. sick of it. im printing without a queue until apple gets it's act together and fixes this from their end. I've already wasted days getting BT to work with an M1 mini, I'm not going to spend an hour diddling with a tiny printer LCD screen and keypad, just to reinstall something that works, kind of. PS. the Rosetta tick box is checked, and the printer is a canon G4010 and the permissions on the printer app look good.

Same printer, same woes! I am also so sick of this, I've almost vowed to never print or scan again - f it! Is this what apple wants, printer-less buttonless droogs of the future?

Every update of macOS, it's been the same: ur lucky if your canon MF printer still works... if not, it may be easier to buy a new printer / scanner than to get the old one back online. Thats what I did with the G4010 - worked great thru Catalina, then Big Sur first took out the scanner and now the printer Q.

I don't know what u mean, method above? There is no application really when using Canon G4010 - AirPrint. Just the native macOS one, which can be used to print just fine, but there is no print queue that comes up, like in previous versions of the OS. Also, the Scan function, which broke during late Catalina days with a cryptic error message, now does nothing, nada, zilch in latest Big Slur. It's a sad day when scanning from an iPhone is faster and more reliable than a multifunction printer scan. But it is, what it is.

DOesn't work for me either. I've tried loooking at the printers folder but can't find anything that has an "open in Rosetta" tick box. Possibly because both printers have oldish drivers that are Intel only. So I still can't open the print queues. Yesterday, it was all ok. :-(

Incidentally, all is fine if I use my old High Sierra iMac, so it looks like a Big Sur/M1 issue.
