Since the update to Big Sur no matter what settings I change there is no double click function
Files or folders must be opened manually ie. The open menu or command Open
This is a vary bad glitch and should be fixed ASAP it is a fundamental part of Mac OS and ease of use.
Very very bad bug please look into this ASAP

What you need to do is to change the "Double-Click speed" to slower. (System Preferences->Mouse).
However, there is a bug ---> You don't have access to "Double-Click Speed" if you DO NOT have a mouse connected!!!!! (so what you will need to do is to plug in a mouse, change the speed to a little slower, and disconnect your mouse).

This took me forever to find out and I suddenly remembered that the same date we updated our OS, my son also tested his new gamer mouse (with ultra fast cursor and click functions). So I had to borrow his mouse back, plugged into my Mac, and found out the Double-Click Speed was set to max after his test).

What is your pointing device? A mouse? Does it require a separate driver? Is it a Built-in trackpad?
Restart in Safe Mode, and see if it works there. Safe Mode is slow, that is normal; the purpose of this test is to ascertain if there is some software interfering with normal operation.
You may also reset NVRAM and SMC.
