Loud crackling noise then iPhone 12 shut off

i had this same issue. I was in the middle of a zoom meeting for work and it made a loud crackle then my screen froze purple then rebooted itself. This phone was $900 so they really need to figure out what that is. I work for a phone store and I’ve only ever seen that happen due to software issues

All I know is that I paid over $900 for this phone and it doesn’t act right.... I’m going to loos my mind if this **** isn’t fixed, I’m not even kidding! I will cause a ******* Sean and not think twice. Fix it apple, ain’t nobody got time

This just happened to me. A loud crackling/static noise (my phone was muted at the time) the app I was using froze and went green, then my phone restarted. It’s a 12 mini and it was at 42% battery. The app was updated and I use it all the time.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. Same phone. Bought it a few months ago everything has been perfectly fine until this happened while charging my phone @94%. Playing music while running a game. I’m gonna need a response by Apple explaining this…

Just happened to me. I was reading an article on Facebook, no music or video playing or anything, when suddenly *CRACKLE* and it turned off… I was able to turn it back on, and the battery is at 42%, which is where I think it was before it turned off, but one of the earlier comments also mentioned 42% battery power so I’m wondering if it’s a specific problem that happens around that percentage…in any case, I don’t see any signs of lingering problems, but I still have no idea why it happened in the first place.

This just happened to me on my iphone 12 mini. Was browsing on Safari and purple pixels (almost like confetti) came on the screen and a crackle then a shock. After that the phone rebooted. Felt like I got electrocuted. Is this a software issue?

Yes!! That just happened with me too. A crackling sound while I was watching a YouTube video then is shut down. I was afraid that the phone short circuited or was gonna blow up or something. Thankfully that didn't happen. I really hope there is some answers for this from Apple

Mine just did this a few minutes ago. Full battery. I was on YouTube kids for my son and it crackled and shut off. Yes I was getting angry. I couldn’t get it restarted. But once I plugged it in it came back on. Scared the crap out of me when it crackled. Any updates on a reason or fix from Apple?

I just experienced this issue and tried to google to see what was wrong.

I put the phone down and in the process heard this crackling/electric short sound then the phone restarted. It seems fine now but the sound was very uncomfortable.

Is this a known issue? Does Apple know about it?

Exact same thing happened tonight. It made a noise as though something had shorted, the screen froze with a series of large pink and green pixels and the last image on the screen was shifted about half an inch off center (to the right). Then it shut off. It booted up fine, and the device didn't feel like it had overheated. No smell of burnt plastic or metal, no ozone scent. Never seen anything like it.

Same as all of you. Was in bed with phone on charger. Picked it up on what looked like a full charge, started to play a game, and a loud crackling/sparking noise along with instant black screen with a few sparks of light Arron’s the edge of the phone then rebooted instantly and now phone seems fine. Scared the crap out of me. Thought maybe a surge through the wire fried the phone. But no heat and phone works like nothing happened now. Afraid to plug it back in or sleep near it now. Any ideas?

The phone seems to be fine afterward, but it definitely scared the crap out of me when it happened. I was expecting actual sparks, but experienced no heat or strange smells afterward that would indicate a damaged component.

This just happened to me. Was just scrolling through my emails and it sounded like an electrical shortage, the screen froze and showed lines across the bottom like the screen had cracked, phone rebooted and works fine now. This could be a serious issue if there is an electrical short in the phone. iPhone 12 Plus

It just happened to me. I literally thought I was being electrocuted by the noise it made. Had picked up my phone not on an app. Dialed my security code and got the fright of my life. Battery 🔋 at 61%.
