M1 MacBook Air with external monitor crashes when sleeping

I've gotten several crashes this way. Almost every time I let my MacBook sleep while connected to the monitor. Here's an excerpt of the crash dump:

Just another follow-up:

I set my M1 power saving settings to default now (turning off the display after 15 minutes and allowing the computer to put the laptop to sleep when the display is off).

I actually tested this by setting it to 1 minute and walking away for 2 hours. Came back after dinner, computer was on the lock screen but had not crashed. (this was the expected behavior)

So, again, setting the DP port on the monitor for the Thunderbolt input to DP 1.2 seems to have resolved the issue for me as well. I still have the it set to DP 1.4 on the standard DP input port on the monitor, which is connected to my PC.

confirmed with 11.2, new firmware, it still panics:

  • I have "Prevent computer from sleep automatically when the display os off" in Power Adapter (my display charges the mac).
  • mac goes to anyway sleep after a while (lid closed or clamshell mode usually)
  • sometimes there's a kernel panic, after a while reboots itself, asks for windows reopen etc.

Well, I’m directly connected over TB3 from the monitor to the laptop so I don’t think there’s an option to change it to DP 1.2

I can definitely go via dock to DP but then I have to go through my KVM because my monitor only has one DP input, which is not ideal here (but that’s also why o have the KVM. On the flip side, do I need DP 1.4 for GSYNC or 3800+ resolution, because that’s what the PC that is connected is running at and would be running at via the KVM (albeit limited to 120hz)

yep. TB display is just DP ;)

got the LG 38WN95C - definitely only influences the hz - just not fancy 144 but only 60 or 75hz. I will just leave it at 1.2 with 75hz until there has been a bugfix which will probably come sooner or later since we already know the output works fine on its own, it just causes a kernel panic which means it can be solved via a software fix at some point.

I have a Dell monitor (Dell U2719D ) and I have tried all of the DP settings. I cannot for the life of me find how to change the Display Port to 1.2 or 1.4. Can somebody help me with this?

Oh, yea-- BTW-- Last night I unplugged my MacBook Pro M1 computer from everything (made sure that it was fully charged in the evening) and this morning-- NO CRASH!!!!! I'd still like to keep it plugged into a charging device, but I don't want to break the spell! LOL!

I am also having insatiability problems with my external monitor. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I am constantly trying to get the M1 MBP to recognise the monitor. I am constantly having to:

  • Reboot the Mac,
  • unplug and replug the monitor,
  • reapply the scale setting.

Over and over and over again. That and the monitor just turns black for a second or two every now and then.

So frustrating.

I am also constantly having to reapply the scale setting through System Preferences.

However, due to the incorrect scaling, my System Preferences window usually opens off-screen. This appears to be a long-running issue for MacOS, dating back several years. The only fix I can find to bring off-screen windows back on-screen is to reset the scale setting in System Preferences.... which is impossible if System Preferences itself is off-screen!

So, as a result, I am now having to restart my M1 MacBook Pro multiple times per day. This is almost as painful as the daily/nightly restarts when previously using DisplayPort 1.4. At least I get the chance to save my work before restarting (with the scaling/off-screen issue), whereas with the DP 1.4 kernel panics, I would lose my work and open windows.

Just adding the crash dump so other user can find this thread.

Using a CalDigit TS3plus and an LG 38WN95C (set to DP1.4) connected via thunderbolt.
