Keyboard Issue on IPhone 12 Pro Max

Have a brand new iPhone 12 max pro and I’ve been using it for roughly two days now. I’ve noticed that when texting or even typing on the internet... even typing this out now.... I have an issue with the keyboard.

I will be typing out words and out of the blue it’ll change from alphabetic mode on the keyboard to the numeric pad. I’m not hitting the 123 button to switch to it. This is very annoying. Words will then be mixed with numbers.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a fix? Or did I just get a faulty phone?

For example, I’m typing this out !92 unt8@ some numbers appear. T!8: is very annoying and this 53,5inf how I usually 54,5. I am not hitting the numeric pad with my t$8’v.

Ugh! Tell me there’s hope!

I'm happy to know Im not the only one with the issue. I think I'm going to call support and see what they can do...

I am currently using a third party keyboard. No issues. So it's the default keyboard of the iPhone that's messed up.

Agreed! This isn't very pleasant. Here are some solutions to fix this issue.

  1. Restart your iPhone.
  2. Update to the latest version of iOS: For this, open iPhone Settings > General > Software Update > Download and Install or Install Now.
  3. Reset All Settings: To do this, open iPhone Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.
  4. Use a third-party keyboard app for the time being: Until Apple acknowledges and fixes it, consider using a keyboard app like Microsoft SwiftKey. It is excellent, and you may like to use it even when the problem with the inbuilt keyboard is fixed. However, the cursor feature (accessed by pressing the space bar) of SwiftKey is not as good as inbuilt iOS keyboards.

Hope it helps.

this is kind of a silly fix, but i started wondering if maybe my hand was somehow hitting the keyboard “123” button by accident in the way i was typing, i was having this issue ALL THE TIME. i ended up buying a battery case and now its lifted JUST enough and the problem no longer happens... so for me it was solved and i guess ling story short i was hitting with my hand accidentally.

Thank you for sharing Minstrel! I really hate to admit it (especially after restarting the phone multiple times, erasing the keyboard dictionary, 2 calls to Apple Care, and 2 attempts at restoring the entire software) but I have realized it's also my hand that is touching the 123 button and activating the numerical keyboard while I type! I still feel this is a bit of a design flaw as anyone with smaller hands is going to struggle this way, but it's good to know this is a solve! I now am training myself to pull my left hand away from the screen while I type...it's a work in progress. Another tip I found to be helpful is turning on the "one-handed keyboard" option under general > keyboard. This moves the keyboard to the right side of the screen which in turn moves the 123 button so it's easier to avoid. Good luck all!

I just got the iPhone 12 max pro and I am getting so frustrated texting. I have fat fingers, so I know it’s not only a small finger problem. I’ve changed to 1 handed text and I’ve restarted the keyboard. Im being cautious not to hit the 123 button, and it always turns on. I’m also noticing the backspace button is lighting up and deleting my letter when I am not even touching anything on the board. So, very annoying considering the price of this thing. I really hope this gets fixed. Soon!

I just finished an only chat with Apple. Seems that the issue lies in the predictive option (Settings - General - Keyboard). They asked me to keep it off and I have not experienced any issues. They did run a Diagnostics test and would let me know if there was any additional actions. Seems to be a bug in the latest update but since turning it off I've had no issues. Hope this helps in the meantime.

I use Grammarly and have also tried swiftkey and gboard. They're alright. They get the job done. I'm currently just using Grammarly. I make sure to turn off the other keyboards though, because it tends to switch them on me. That gets annoying too.

Hopefully the more people that have the issue they'll get the darn thing fixed...i like the keyboard that comes with the iPhones.
