Keyboard Issue on IPhone 12 Pro Max

Have a brand new iPhone 12 max pro and I’ve been using it for roughly two days now. I’ve noticed that when texting or even typing on the internet... even typing this out now.... I have an issue with the keyboard.

I will be typing out words and out of the blue it’ll change from alphabetic mode on the keyboard to the numeric pad. I’m not hitting the 123 button to switch to it. This is very annoying. Words will then be mixed with numbers.

Has anyone else had this issue? Is there a fix? Or did I just get a faulty phone?

For example, I’m typing this out !92 unt8@ some numbers appear. T!8: is very annoying and this 53,5inf how I usually 54,5. I am not hitting the numeric pad with my t$8’v.

Ugh! Tell me there’s hope!

I didn’t bother reading the entire forum because hey, who has that much time and energy. I just wanted to say for people still having this issue the reason it’s happening it because if the space between your thumb and index finger I.e. edge of the palm will register touching the “123” bubble during some points in your typing. That’s the reason when you’re typing something like “how are you?” You end up getting, “how are y97...” instead. When you use your left thumb to reach further out towards the right side of the keyboard, you’ll notice that space I mentioned between the thumb and index finger will hit register the “123” bubble. I find that adjusting your grip, using one handed keyboard, using fingerless gloves (cotton), and or using voice to text to type are helpful ways to avoid this annoying persistent issue. A lot of people upgrading to the new models of iPhone from the older models like the 6, 7, 8, will find that the new screen of the 12 is a big change. You’re used to resting your hand on the edge of the phone while you type and most people for some reason cross type where they use their left thumb to type out letters on the right side of the keyboard. But, it isn’t a software issue or hardware issue. Once you find the problem, the solution is easier to come up with. Hope I was of some help:

What helped slightly is turn off slide to type.

this problem is happening to me like crazy but importantly I think I noticed that it only happens when I have “portrait orientation lock” on. I wonder if it’s something related to the gyroscope. Still need a fix because I use portrait orientation lock all the time, like in bed.

Slide to type doesn’t fix 5)3 (See?!! This is the issue!!) the problem. I’ve paid attention to finger placement - still happens. It’s a glitch. A big one. An extremely Annoying one. I have an iPhone 11... and this has been happening off and on for almost a year. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I was an diehard iPhone fan ... no longer.

YES same! It’s driving me nuts... I’m not hitting the 123 button, but the keyboard randomly shifts to numbers on its own (so my “t” often is a 5). It’ll happen over and over and over again, then will be ok for a while and so on. APPLE PLEASE FIX!

Similar issue with new iPhone 12. Keypad seems to be off. It’s like I suddenly can’t type properly with my thumbs anymore. Glad to know it’s not me, but wonder if there would be any point trying to return it or get them to fix it.

I just got my Iphone 12 Pro Max and I thought I was the only one having the 123 keyboard issue. I was going to head back to the Apple store to get this fixed somehow?! For me, I have fat fingers and I think like some others might have mentioned it's how you hold your phone.. Another thing is that I'm not sure if my hand is generating too much "Heat" where the screen detects my finger as pressing the button? (Just my theory).. Is anyone having similar experiences? I've just reset my keyboard as one of the recommendation and I will see if that helps.. :(

Been having the same issue since first getting my iPhone 12 near launch. I’ve had several previous iPhones and never struggled with typing on them like this. Along with the number thing I notice that sometimes it registers I’m hitting backspace as well despite not. And the keyboard often freezes and just doesn’t accept any inputs.

I have reset the keyboard a bunch of times but these issues persist.

I have an iPhone 11, and this has been happening since I received it!! I’ve contacted Apple care and they’ve never heard of this issue, and had me reset a few things, but it hasn’t fixed the issue. Usually t’s and 5’s... they asked me if I wasn’t accidentally pressing the wrong keys. (Sigh). I’m pressing the correct keys. How can this be fixed?! Obviously a glitch - and Not just with brand new iPhone 11’s!!

I have long hands and this happens to me too. I haven’t bought a case yet and and just got my new phone yesterday. I’m hoping a case will help pull my left hand out enough to remedy this design flaw. :)

Ugh this is happening to me with my 12 mini. Literally just got it last week and noticed the keyboard problem. I thought at first it was me accidentally hitting the number button but I watched it happen while only using my right hand to type.

It’s horribly annoying and have no idea what to do. Since it’s such a new phone I may see if I can get a replacement idk. Haven’t bought apple care yet but may have to now hah.

The most comical part is the amount of editing I had to do in this little post because there were whole words of just numbers and symbols XD

Sure hope this gets fixed!

I just got the iPhone 12 max pro and I am getting so frustrated texting. I have fat fingers, so I know it’s not only a small finger problem. I’ve changed to 1 handed text and I’ve restarted the keyboard. Im being cautious not to hit the 123 button, and it always turns on. I’m also noticing the backspace button is lighting up and deleting my letter when I am not even touching anything on the board. So, very annoying considering the price of this thing. I really hope this gets fixed. Soon!
