Silent switch randomly turns on - iPhone 12 Pro Max

My new iPhone 12 Pro Max toggles the silent mode switch randomly to the on position. I don’t know why it’s doing that. I’ve turned off the “do not disturb” and “schedule” functions but the silent mode still toggles randomly to the on position. Could it be a software issue?

Yeah I’m finding it is accidentally getting tripped, presumably when taking out / putting in pocket or moving it. As others have said it’s strange as it’s not unlike the same switch on earlier iPhones, perhaps it protrudes a little more or has a less stiff action, but I have had several generations of iPhone and this is the only one I’ve had this problem with.

it is impossible for the switch to move by itself, it is simply a minor design flaw causing a significant annoyance, but I doubt much can be done about it for those of us that own the 12 pro. Just gonna have to get used to checking it’s not on silent!!

It’s not a problem with the phone as much as it is the new softer rubber cases. It doesn’t grip the front of the phone like previous Apple cases, this causes it to move when taking it out of your pocket; tripping the silent switch. The flaw is with the Apple cases, I switched to the Otterbox case and it fixed the problem.

It's easy for me to simulate it with my Apple silicon case on my iPhone 12. The case is not as snug fitting as the silicone case was on my iPhone 6. The corner by the switch slides off and on easily so when it is in my pocket, the movement jiggles that corner of the case. While the case doesn't come off, it doesn't have to move very far to trip the switch. I'm hoping Apple will refund the cost of the case. One of these days, I'll go to an Apple Store to ask about it. Now that there are so many posts about it, and I can easily duplicate it, maybe they will refund or exchange my case.

It has happened to me many times. I found that the default setting for back triple tap is mute. That gives me the trouble. When the triple back tap is checked as mute, then the silent on/off function will be turned on/off when you triple tap the back. For some reason the phone is too sensitive to the back taps. If you change triple tap to some other function, the silent on /off will not turn on unexpectedly.

I've had exactly the same issue with the Apple silicon case and iPhone 12 pro. A bit of pressure on the case near the switch toggles the switch from normal to "silent" (off). Then I miss calls.

The switch definitely sticks out too far. Quite a bit further than earlier iPhones I have had.

I've fixed the issue by simply cutting off part of the edge of the silicon case - so now when it flexes nothing touches the switch.

I only experienced this issue after getting a 12 Pro with Apple's cases. The mute switch turning on multiple times a day happens with both the silicon and leather cases. Apple's clear case is also defective in that the wake/sleep button is too stiff. I've exchanged all 3 cases and the issues persist so it is a design or manufacturing problem. All 3 Apple cases have are flawed. Be sure to visit apple.com/feedback and tell them about the problem, as they don't read these community forum posts. Then look for another case option.

I don't know if you have an Apple Store near you but I was able to get a refund for my case. Apple has a two week return policy but since I was able to easily demonstrate how the case slips off the corner and flips the switch and I had the invoice, the customer service agent was able to override the return policy and issue me a complete refund.
