Silent switch randomly turns on - iPhone 12 Pro Max

There is a solution. Took me awhile to decide to do it but I did and it worked. I took a razor knife and cut the thin strip of case above the switch. I have the apple soft case but it's not soft. The bar was very hard to cut. After cutting it off the case is still stiff and won't come off any more than it did before. The bar isn't there though to flip the switch.

It is the case that's moving it. A slight, very slight push back of the top corner causes the case to flip the switch off. I cut mine and it's fixed it and it works good. Hated to do that on a $50 cased.

Thanks. That's what apple support told me but there has been instances wherein at night my phone was not in silent mode but when I check in morning, its on silent. Once while booking Uber, suddenly I see notification that phone is now silent and I see silent button on. These I can't reproduce but they tell a different story. May be there is problem with assertive touch or switch hardware is loose.

I you've got an apple soft case, or leather case, it's the case. Even if seems like it didn't happen that way, just picking the phone up sometimes by the sides of the case can trigger it to flip off the switch. It doesn't take much when the case is handled in must the right way.

my iPhone 12 mini with apple silicon case has done the magic toggle trick sine day one. I agree it appears to be some interaction between the case and the switch whilst in my pants pocket. i'm getting missed calls . Simple test is to press down on the case with low pressure and it toggles the switch to silent. Its the case!and

No it doesn’t. Some external force is required to activate the silent button. There is no little motor in the phone that moves the switch.

I have had this problem for about a year, with the switch moving by it self. Finally after reading this post, I twisted the case and viola, the switch moved. I will get some double sided tape to hopefully prevent that corner of the phone case from moving

I had the same problem with the official Apple case for my iPhone 12 turning on the silent mode. Apple replaced the case ("We've never seen this problem before") but the problem continued. Eventually got a refund and purchased another make of case that solved the problem (and was £20 cheaper)

Why can't apple put out an update to disable to side button that allows the "Silent" mode to Turn off and on. They could make it so that you go into Settings and turn it off/on for those of us who don't mind a few extra steps. I am missing multiple important calls and it's driving me nuts.

Dan, no issues since I hacked the case. Your correct ,it wasn't easy to cut. I used a pair of nail clippers; quite frankly I don't give a toss about the appearance its the functionality that matters. Apple need to do a re-design.

When I called them to ask them what to do about it and inform them of this. The guy pretty much tried to do the "have you restarted the phone?" thing. That was quite awhile ago. They eventually bumped it up and I talked to a higher up lady. She said, no refunds and I'll bring it to the attention of the engineers". That was it.

That being said... It's a really nice case. My sister has the same phone with a very good hard case. She's always dropping it as it's not easy to hold on to.

Its the cover, initially I thought its some software setting but its actually the cover. Also, its very sensitive which triggers the silent switch ON on slightest of touch. Sad part is that I bought it from apple store and I don't think they will take it back. Really poor from Apple end though.

I figured out a pretty simple solution. I have a silicone Apple case and it was continuously switching to silent mode over and over again. I decided to put a small piece of cardboard (torn piece of toilet paper ring, actually) underneath the case covering the switch, and, voila! Problem solved. Hope this works for you guys out there as well! :)

iOS 14 or earlier: Go to Settings/Do Not Disturb and check the settings

iOS 15: Go to Settings/Focus/Do Not Disturb and check the settings

If it is only phone calls that are silenced go to Settings/Phone and turn off Silence Unknown Callers.

What DOES matter is that you didn’t read the post that I was replying to. Losomarri specifically said that the problem is NOT the switch, that the phone is silenced when the switch is in the unmuted position.
