Silent switch randomly turns on - iPhone 12 Pro Max

My new iPhone 12 Pro Max toggles the silent mode switch randomly to the on position. I don’t know why it’s doing that. I’ve turned off the “do not disturb” and “schedule” functions but the silent mode still toggles randomly to the on position. Could it be a software issue?

My switch was being toggled by the Apple silicone case. If you have an Apple case, you can easily duplicate this by gently pushing the top left corner of the case (the one nearest the silent mode switch) toward the back of the phone. Without much effort, it will trip the switch. So, in my case, when my phone was in my pocket, it would often flip the silent mode switch. Since I returned the Apple case and replaced it with an Otterbox Symmetry MagSafe case, it no longer accidentally flips the switch. However, the my MagSafe wallet does not stay on as well as it did on the Apple case. I do not know if it's due to the strength of the magnets or the fact that the silicone case was "grippier" or something else. I saw where another poster replaced his Apple case with a Nomad case and the problem went away. Good Luck!

I have the same issue. I just got an iPhone 12 a week ago and at least once a day the mute switch toggles from off to on. I keep missing calls because the ringer has been turned off. My phone is in a case and I cannot rub my finger on the side of the case and get the switch to move; I have to get my fingernail in the slot in the case to toggle the switch. My wife also got a new iPhone 12 and she is having the same problem. I think our phones must be haunted.

I too have exactly the same issue. I put the toggle in the on position (to hear calls) and put it on it's Belkin magnet charger and in the morning the switch is on the vibrate position and I have my family thinking something is wrong cause I an elder who lives alone and they worry....

I am frustrated that I can't seem to get it to stop. I've tried turning off DND but you can't uncheck the "silence only when phone is locked". When you push the right side top button in does your Iphone click and go dark? I know that's to lock it, but does it silence it too? If not that, then I too have a haunted phone... and need an exorcism from Apple or a new phone....

I am having the same issue. As illogical as it may seem, the manual switch will change itself lying there untouched on the table. The strangest thing I have ever seen, and it is a BIG problem - I have missed critical work calls. I wonder if it has a manufacturing defect such that the internal portion of the switch is under pressure from the case and "springs" back to the do not disturb position after a while or after a jostle.

I just got off chat with Apple. After wanting pictures of the case and not knowing how I should send it, they said return the case. It was Amazon and return date is over with. I told them that I should contact Amazon and tell them that Apple said they had to take the case back? (BRB). They said go to an Apple store and tell them to look at it. Then I was disconnected. After 40 yrs with Apple.. not happy. I'll drive to the store, a fair jaunt here in Maine and wonder if they'll be any better. $45 case.. geesh. I can thumb the corner of the case and turn the switch off with just a flick. It's frustrating to be checking to see if red is showing on the switch all the time. Guess I'll try a visit to the Maine Mall this week.

I have the same problem and have been able to replicate turning the switch off with the edge of the soft Apple case. Earlier I'd been trying to see if just digging a finger into the switch opening, as I might do trying to turn off an alarm with the phone in a pocket, would turn it off. I was never able to get that to happen. Reading about others' suspecting the soft Apple case I tried that and I am able to easily push the inside/front edge of the case against the switch and silently switch it off. If I'm not looking directly at the screen or the switch at the time I likely wouldn't notice that it's off. -- I have not had the issue of the sound turning ON when I wanted it silent. --- I am curious how it worked to cut a small chunk out of the case. Is that preventing inadvertently switching off? Does it ruin the case? Will Apple give money back for other customers who bought the case?

Thanks. That's what apple support told me but there has been instances wherein at night my phone was not in silent mode but when I check in morning, its on silent. Once while booking Uber, suddenly I see notification that phone is now silent and I see silent button on. These I can't reproduce but they tell a different story. May be there is problem with assertive touch or switch hardware is loose.

Had same problem. First they go thru and change some settings. Tried it ….no difference. Took it in and they examined settings and visually inspected the silent switch, ran software diagnostic. Found nothing…not sure if they changed settings. No change. Reloaded phone. No change. Gave me a new case and frame (new switch). No change. Had to pound on them-gave me a new phone but implied I’m a head case. If new phone does it….manager said ITS MY PROBLEM.

They have no idea.
