Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

After more than two weeks, I think that it is time to sum up the situation: the "flashing Apple logo" issue described by Blue-per does not occur when we unbox and boot the iPhone 12 (mini)/12 Pro (Max) for the first time, it occurs when the iPhone is already set up.

In most cases the phone performs normally after it boots up. Some users found hardware problems when using their new iPhone (phone needing to be connected to power in order to boot up, screen burn-in, battery charges very slowly, camera not taking HDR photos, etc.).

In my opinion those problems are not related with the flashing logo at startup, because they are very different from each other and they are isolated cases. They are just coincidences.

That does not mean that the flashing logo is not an issue: there are iPhone 12/12 Pro which boots with the (classic) steady Apple logo and some iPhone 12/12 Pro that do not, so it is obviously not a normal thing. It is not a "new feature" or "expected behavior".

After reading other answers on the forum, we can deduce that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it (mainly) occurs on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January with iOS 14.3 pre-installed. As a matter of fact a lot of people returned the device during the last weeks and got a new one with the same problem.

Now, we suppose (and hope) that the issue is part of iOS 14.3 and not in the hardware of the phone. In this case Apple should be able to fix it with an update, maybe already with a sub-dot-release (iOS 14.4.X) or later with iOS 14.5. There are some comments in favor of that supposition too, where people noticed that issue after updating from iOS 14.2 to iOS 14.3.

On the other hand, it is strange that (most) iPhones who updated the operating system from 14.2 to 14.3 did not experience the issue. And it is even stranger that I read a reply from a user who encountered the problem already on iOS 14.2. Those facts contradict our supposition above, and maybe the flashing logo has nothing to do with iOS 14.3.

I am sure a lot of people have this problem too; they do not notice it, because nowadays we do not shutdown and restart our phones very often. And even if they do that, they (probably) don't keep looking at the boot screen for issues.

It is very hard for us to guess if it is a software or a hardware problem. Only Apple can give us an official answer, and in order to solve the problem as soon as possible I ask you to continue upvoting this and other similar posts (clicking on "I have this question too"), commenting if you have some news from Apple and reporting the case to the Apple Support.

Hi there, I can relate to u. Since my wife also has the 1st batch of iphone 12 pro, and she doesn't have the flash logo problem even w/ ios 14.4.1 . My iphone 12 pro came with ios 14.3, and I bought it in February. It has the flash logo problem (even after upgraded to 14.4.1), yet it doesn't affect the way the phone works in ANY way. Or as some would address it, maybe not yet. But my wife's iphone 12 pro (first batch in December) does have a glitch with activating the Airdrop, sometimes she has to reset it (pls check members of your family w/ the first batch iphone 12 if they do have that issue as well). All we can do is to hope that the new SW update will solve the issue. 🤞

Same problem here and I received my new iPhone 12 Pro Max just days ago in mid March 2021 (which had been on a back order), therefore likely very recent from manufacture possibly having the latest hardware revisions.

Therefore highly possibly (hopefully) not hardware related, which was my main concern when I first experienced the issue. So in effect that gives some piece of mind that the iPhone is ok and hopefully iOS 14.5 will address this.

Would be interesting if this issue relates in any way to those whom restored from an iCloud backup save from a previous model iPhone with everything on it, as apposed to setting up iPhone clean from scratch as new - just a thought.

I actually had one phone that I set up as new and didn’t add any apps to and didn’t do any SW updates on, and it still developed the behavior after a week. That is when I became more concerned that the issue might possibly be HW based or be a combination of HW and SW. A newer phone may not necessarily have newer HW. It really just depends on how large the stockpile of parts is that Apple is working from and, in addition, how large the stockpiles are of the suppliers of each of the individual components. I think of it like this, if there is a particular tire for cars that is faulty and needs to be recalled whether or not you end up with that tire on your car depends on how many of those tires your local tire store keeps in stock as well as how many of the faulty tires the tire manufacturer themselves actually made.

I’ve been following this thread for over a month. In the beginning there was very little information. I spent hours on the phone with Apple. I back up my phone and reset it to factory settings. I reinstalled everything.I went to the store as recommended. They minimized my concerns at the time as have some of the responses here.I was told so many different things along the way. Apple employees were not aware of the “glitch” from what I could tell in mid February. I’m still following it. We decided to stick with the phone for now. However, there seem to be a lot of fatigue from the Apple people responding. The thing we fail to recognize is that people are still buying phones and discovering the issue. Getting into this at a point where there over 50 pages could be overwhelming. For them it’s a brand new problem. Until a few posts in the last couple of days, I didn’t even see it recognized as an issue. We are finally beginning to see that and I think hadn’t been more open as to the cause of the problem this thread would’ve been a lot shorter. Many of us struggled to restart the phone. There were no instructions that said wait until you see the flash and then remove your finger and let it start up 10 to 15 seconds later. It took me two weeks to figure that out! No one knew. I found that solution in one of the posts. That’s why continue to follow. I would love for this to go away. As I’ve said before, forthrightness would have been helpful.

Same problem. Phone worked fine out of the box. Updated from my old phone still no issues. Charging may have caused the flashing. Update of iOS had no effect on stopping the flashing.

Replacement coming after they get this faulty one back. I will try running it as a new phone installing only what I need. If it happens again I guess I’ll have to replace the phone with an iPhone 11. Real shame as the camera was what I needed.

That’s another good point. I have this issue too. Sometimes, especially after I just turned off the phone, when I try to turn it back on, nothing happens, even holding the side button for like twenty seconds. I just have to release the button, wait a few second and reinitiate the pressing again, for having the “flash” and consequently the apple logo.

Maybe it’s related to the problem we are talking here. I mean, when you turn on the phone, the flash indicates the device is working to initiate, then when the apple logo appears, it is just a matter of 1-2 seconds before the device is ready to use, which can seem very satisfying because you think it just needs a few instants to start, but then we understand the time for booting the phone begins from the flash, so it is a little longer. Well, following this reasoning, I think when we shut down the phone, it becomes dark after just a second or two, but probably even while dark, the procedure of shutting down is continuing and requires more time, so if we try to turn it back on right after, not even the flash appears because it’s still finishing the previous procedure of turning off. In that case, I think it’s better to see a phone that requires 6 seconds more for turning on and turning off, than having a black screen (after the flash or even after the switching off) that lets us think the phone is inactive when actually is working towards the completion of the input we have given to it.

The fact that aside for a brief moment after you press the button to boot your phone it works as designed should help assuage you of any concerns.

If nothing else, remember that in most countries, you have a full year from the date of purchase for any hardware issues that arise with your phone to be fixed by Apple for free.

That is mostly true, but we are talking about a high-end product here and so people are naturally anxious to fully understand the scale of the anomaly.

While purchasing a premium product (such as an iPhone) doesn't mean we should never expect possible bugs or manufacturing defects, when these are present it is important to establish

  1. whether it's a software defect
  2. whether it's a hardware defect
  3. in case it's hardware, whether it may affect, in unforeseen ways, other functionality

As for me, given it's a very recent purchase, should this be hardware-related I would want to replace it sooner rather than later.

I also have the same issue :( the apple logo flickers and 10 seconds after the normal logo would appear. I’ve asked @AppleSupport through Twitter and they said:

But even after i updated to iOS 14.4.2 this issue still happens.

@Tikabirbi

In the screenshot, when you ask "Is there any temporary solution for this issue", besides the logo flashing at boot up, are you experiencing any material problem with the phone that is linked to the flashing?

Or are you just asking a temporary solution for the flashing issue to disappear?

Wife updated here operating system right out the box, even before activation with service provider. No problems.

On the fourth day of use the flashing logo appeared. Doesn't appear to have had any affect on operation.

As a long time Apple user and devotee, what I find troubling is that while this discussion started almost three months ago there really hasn't been an adequate response or even acknowledgement of the problem from the powers that be. There have been three IOS updates in the interim but nothing about this particular issue.

I too am falling in the category of IPhone 12 Pro buyers who just purchased in the last 2-3 weeks but exchanged it due to other defects after only using it for a week. After speaking with my carrier and Apple support on a 3-way call, this was just one of the issues I was having and mentioned.

Long story short, I received the new device and followed setup steps along with the troubleshoot steps I was given by Apple. As far as I can tell, the most important (which was call dropping) issue, has been resolved. Yet the blinking if the screen upon powering on still remains in this new device. I am most definitely keeping a close eye on any further issues but I think we would all appreciate if Apple would promptly resolve this. I have never owned an iPhone that takes this long to reboot or restart. This is an inconvenience time wise and just does not sit well. Especially with how high loyal iPhone purchasers pay to own the latest and greatest!

Along with the flashing logo, the connect to iTunes to restore (Recovery screen) is also blank, like literally just a black screen. I didn't know that the flashing logo was a widespread issue, I just got my phone 2 days ago and faced the issue, so I contacted Apple Support online. I tried whatever they told me to and had to back up my phone on my PC and restore it from iTunes (On windows). That's when I spotted the blank recovery mode screen. I hope Apple fixes this issue cause new iOS users would be confused when they see that and maybe even panic cause iPhone 12 Pro Max is an expensive phone and when you face issues the day you get the phone, it kinda ruins their brand image. I also faced 2 more issues, when on a call if I play music/video, any for of media in short, the audio quality of the media drops and comes out similar to the audio of the call, which was not the case on my older iPhone X. Plus the Wifi/cellular speed drops when you're on a call.

There is certainly no reason whatsoever for you to reboot your phone each morning, but if you want to it's still no big deal to hit the power switch and then walk away and return five minutes later - your phone will be booted and ready to use.

If I worked for Apple, they've forgotten to send me a paycheck… ever.

Honestly, it's just a cosmetic issue. Hit the power switch, when you see a flash, walk away and come back in a few minutes, then use your phone normally.
