Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

After more than two weeks, I think that it is time to sum up the situation: the "flashing Apple logo" issue described by Blue-per does not occur when we unbox and boot the iPhone 12 (mini)/12 Pro (Max) for the first time, it occurs when the iPhone is already set up.

In most cases the phone performs normally after it boots up. Some users found hardware problems when using their new iPhone (phone needing to be connected to power in order to boot up, screen burn-in, battery charges very slowly, camera not taking HDR photos, etc.).

In my opinion those problems are not related with the flashing logo at startup, because they are very different from each other and they are isolated cases. They are just coincidences.

That does not mean that the flashing logo is not an issue: there are iPhone 12/12 Pro which boots with the (classic) steady Apple logo and some iPhone 12/12 Pro that do not, so it is obviously not a normal thing. It is not a "new feature" or "expected behavior".

After reading other answers on the forum, we can deduce that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it (mainly) occurs on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January with iOS 14.3 pre-installed. As a matter of fact a lot of people returned the device during the last weeks and got a new one with the same problem.

Now, we suppose (and hope) that the issue is part of iOS 14.3 and not in the hardware of the phone. In this case Apple should be able to fix it with an update, maybe already with a sub-dot-release (iOS 14.4.X) or later with iOS 14.5. There are some comments in favor of that supposition too, where people noticed that issue after updating from iOS 14.2 to iOS 14.3.

On the other hand, it is strange that (most) iPhones who updated the operating system from 14.2 to 14.3 did not experience the issue. And it is even stranger that I read a reply from a user who encountered the problem already on iOS 14.2. Those facts contradict our supposition above, and maybe the flashing logo has nothing to do with iOS 14.3.

I am sure a lot of people have this problem too; they do not notice it, because nowadays we do not shutdown and restart our phones very often. And even if they do that, they (probably) don't keep looking at the boot screen for issues.

It is very hard for us to guess if it is a software or a hardware problem. Only Apple can give us an official answer, and in order to solve the problem as soon as possible I ask you to continue upvoting this and other similar posts (clicking on "I have this question too"), commenting if you have some news from Apple and reporting the case to the Apple Support.

"At least this issue does not affect the functionality/operation of the phone."

And I am glad that is the case.

However, I am sure no engineer designed this expensive little computer to flash the Apple logo.

It is clearly a glitch, a malfunction in an otherwise stellar iPhone 12 Pro Max.

I would amend your sentence, 'At least this issue does not affect the functionality/operation of the phone....YET'.

the fact that a fix is taking so long makes one wonder what else this glitch might portend.

Admittedly this Apple logo flash issue (as small as it is) is starting to bug me more and more, but still not as much as the yellow display tint issue. However both issues combined serve to be quite overwhelming and especially for a 1,400 price tag (12 Pro Max).

I have done a complete factory restore through iTunes on PC which downloaded afresh the latest version of iOS (already installed by the way). From the iTunes messages during the procedure, I noticed that it appeared to reinstall the iOS and firmware. Then 7 to 8 hours later after the iPhone’s back up file was restored back, I checked by doing an iPhone reboot and the same issue persisted with the Apple logo flash (and also that of the subtle yellow-tint white of the display).

Im losing faith with Apple.

I could almost live with the silly Apple logo flash, but not over a 1,400 price tag.

I can't speak for Chriscky, but I was told by Apple Support to send the phone back.

I did.

Waiting for resolution of this (and other) problem(s) before I do anything else.

Meanwhile the wife still has her iPhone 12 Pro Max but is afraid to send her "trade-in" off because it is imperative that she has a phone that will actually work 100% of the time. At this point both of us feel it is too early to tell.

3rd replacement and same issue happening here. On the previous ones the issue got worse , in the beginning it would turn on on the 2nd attempt after the logo flashing, like many described. After a few days, it would only turn on after 4 or 5 attempts 😳 I’ve only turn this one off once so not sure if it will also get worse overtime. I will be returning this one and keep trying I guess but this is not looking very promising! Oh First phone was bought online, second in person at one Apple location, 3rd also in person on another Apple location... someone said this only starts happening after a full charge, but I’m really not sure.

We bought 2 iPhone 12 Pro's earlier this year after waiting months and the same issue.

When I switch them off and reboot them the logo pops up and immediately disappears. I have tried holding down the side button until the logo stabilisers but to no avail. Even my husbands 12 Pro doesn't want to reboot - its like it's just not going to come back on.

I did report this to Apple but there was no answer to this issue and I was told if it continues to let them know.

I was going to speak with Apple again but it seems there is no answer to this problem. Time ticks away on our warranty with no resolution.

Mine did this out of the box as well. My phone doesn’t ring all the time. The volume of the ring sometimes changes. When I went to Apple twice after being urged to do so on the phone they did not do what they said they were going to do which was replace my phone on the second time. They insist that they can replace all different parts of it and that’s the same thing. I’m refusing. They claim that it’s because they care about the environment. I know perfectly well that if I return the phone it will come back as refurbished so it’s nothing about the environment I’ve backed up my phone and done a factory reset. Apple people on this website keeps saying that everything is normal on this phone and it clearly is not. They even get a little snarky with some people. I would be very happy if the next update fixed it but I’m not sure that it’s not going to just mask it. People who got their phones before January seem to not have the problem. We’re all running the same software so I’m pretty convinced it’s a hardware problem. But I’m not an engineer. I’ve written to Apple twice and never even get an acknowledgment that it was sent. This is my third of fourth iPhone. I’m on my second MacBook. I’ve never had these kinds of problems before and never saw a thread that went on and on. And yes it’s possible that the back up has the software glitch in it but it doesn’t explain why before everything is put back on the phone that it continues to flash. Happening worldwide. There are pages and pages of the same complaint. There are thousands of responses. There are people who don’t respond like my husband who has the same issue. I wasn’t as concerned until my phone stopped ringing. I had talk to a family member who has a close association with Apple. So I kept the phone despite my concerns. He believed Apple would fix it. It’s been two full months. It’s not fixed.

Which is why I am convinced it’s not a software issue. Software might be masking the future versions but I’m not convinced it’s not hardware. In addition to the flash., my phone doesn’t always ring, ring volume changes in the middle of ringing at times, and yesterday the whole thing froze and I couldn’t even shut down the phone. The reason I keep saying I don’t think it’s a software issue is because people who got their phones earlier, didn’t have the problem even with newer software updates. By this time we were all running the same software. We’re up to About 64 pages and thousands of responses. They take down any of my responses that mention things that are restricted by the terms of service.

Also, I was advised by the online reps to go to the store to get a replacement for my phone. When I got to the store, they refuse Not an official update until it shows up for you to update. They’re expecting it within the week. But of course that can change.

It was Trial and error before figuring it out Trial and error before figuring it out to let it flash and then remove my finger and not repress the start upI spoke to Apple on the telephone who suggested I go to the store to get a new phone. When I got to the store, for the first time they told me it’s a known issue.. They told me that they were not allowed to replace the phones. I’ve had other problems with his phone now including the flash, not ringing, the ringing not adjusting when I press the buttons. And recently a total freeze of the phone that I couldn’t even shut down for about 5-10 minutes. It was my third trip to the store and the first time they even acknowledged that this was an issue. I have AppleCare. My first contact about the issue was prior to my 14 days. But they refused to do anything but said that having it documented would be in my favor. I have decided to live with it until all these other things started happening.

It was trial and error to figure out how to start up the phone. When it flashed the instinct was to just keep pressing the key but I quickly learned that you press the key remove your finger and let it run through. It does take longer than any other Apple iPhone I’ve had.

Here’s hoping.

Good comments. My 12 Pro Max has been going through the Apple flash for quite a while. The only change has been a longer and longer wait time for the phone to start properly. However, you mentioned your phone freezing and my phone has started doing that as well, 6 times so far when I can't leave that function or power off the phone because no buttons work. I end up leaving it alone and it eventually responds to touch after about 5m, or it powers off.

This expensive little computer was not designed to malfunction like this. It's more than a glitch. I hope the next Apple update fixes everything. We'll see. Thanks.

I have this “flashing logo” start up too! Ordered 12 pro max 4/15, rec’d and set up 4/19/2021.

First time it happened was today AFTER hard shutdown (cuz new Apple ID & PW reset didn’t show up on settings screen OR at appleid.Apple.com

Second time, 5 min ago, again after shut down to see if Apple ID on settings page would reset.

when started up, multiple flashes of logo then BLACK screen. Three times happened: after first two instances, tried to start again thinking it was my error. Third time was trying to figure out WHAT to do next! Then it started normally, about 30 sec later.

iOS is: 14.4.2

i have Not updated anything on Settings for iOS

WEIRDLY: when tapped reply got page to sign in with query: old Apple ID or “another?” Chose another, used new with new PW and here I am replying. AND Apple REALLY needs to address this: it APPEARS the phone has hardware issue on starting up after being shut down. This DID NOT happen when powered on the FIRST time out of box.

Thanks to all for Comments. Helped me realize I was not losing my mind. Cheers.

why this issue appeared just the some of the iphones which was working with same Software?

While you might be referring to two same iPhone models, there are no two identical configuration of the iOS devices.

At least small official explanation of the issue should be in place.

The fact, the issue got fixed by software update means this was some minor software bug affecting boot up process, not affecting use of the device in anyway.
