Apple logo flash at startup

New iPhone 12 Pro. At startup the Apple logo flashes super bright for a brief second then the screen goes dark for about 10 seconds before the Apple Logo re appears at normal brightness to finish the startup. I’ve had iPhones for years and never had the logo turn on and then off during startup. Is that Normal for the 12?

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 14

After more than two weeks, I think that it is time to sum up the situation: the "flashing Apple logo" issue described by Blue-per does not occur when we unbox and boot the iPhone 12 (mini)/12 Pro (Max) for the first time, it occurs when the iPhone is already set up.

In most cases the phone performs normally after it boots up. Some users found hardware problems when using their new iPhone (phone needing to be connected to power in order to boot up, screen burn-in, battery charges very slowly, camera not taking HDR photos, etc.).

In my opinion those problems are not related with the flashing logo at startup, because they are very different from each other and they are isolated cases. They are just coincidences.

That does not mean that the flashing logo is not an issue: there are iPhone 12/12 Pro which boots with the (classic) steady Apple logo and some iPhone 12/12 Pro that do not, so it is obviously not a normal thing. It is not a "new feature" or "expected behavior".

After reading other answers on the forum, we can deduce that the issue does not occur on iPhone 12/12 Pro that were shipped with iOS 14.1 or with iOS 14.2 pre-installed, it (mainly) occurs on iPhone 12/12 Pro shipped in January with iOS 14.3 pre-installed. As a matter of fact a lot of people returned the device during the last weeks and got a new one with the same problem.

Now, we suppose (and hope) that the issue is part of iOS 14.3 and not in the hardware of the phone. In this case Apple should be able to fix it with an update, maybe already with a sub-dot-release (iOS 14.4.X) or later with iOS 14.5. There are some comments in favor of that supposition too, where people noticed that issue after updating from iOS 14.2 to iOS 14.3.

On the other hand, it is strange that (most) iPhones who updated the operating system from 14.2 to 14.3 did not experience the issue. And it is even stranger that I read a reply from a user who encountered the problem already on iOS 14.2. Those facts contradict our supposition above, and maybe the flashing logo has nothing to do with iOS 14.3.

I am sure a lot of people have this problem too; they do not notice it, because nowadays we do not shutdown and restart our phones very often. And even if they do that, they (probably) don't keep looking at the boot screen for issues.

It is very hard for us to guess if it is a software or a hardware problem. Only Apple can give us an official answer, and in order to solve the problem as soon as possible I ask you to continue upvoting this and other similar posts (clicking on "I have this question too"), commenting if you have some news from Apple and reporting the case to the Apple Support.

I had the same issue with my I phone pro max 12 128gb I had to return it 3 times all had the same flashing apple logo and now I got the fourth one with same problem I am really disappointed and don’t know should I return this one too as I can’t get refund because I traded with my old I phone so I will lose my trade , I think apple should fix this problem and extend their warranty 2 years and if they can’t fix it they should offer these phone for free trade with I phone 13 as this’s apple faults, please inform us with apple solutions ASAP as this issue is getting to many people.

I have cricket and using a 12 Pro max 128gb in silver and I’m working with apple support now. I tried erasing and restore from back up and the problem is still there. I’m 2 hours away from the nearest apple store and I’ve already made the trip 2 times as the first device I purchased a 12 pro 128gb in silver had a screen defect. Like an actual bubble in the glass. I’m not wanting to do it again but only have 4 days left of the 14 day return policy. What do ya do. Have it serviced as they recommend? I’d rather not on a new phone.

I’m so glad that your phone’s operation wasn’t disrupted by the “flash” issue! Unfortunately, I have had some other issues as well after the flash began (decreased responsiveness of the touch screen, apps freezing up suddenly, and then the phone would not restart at all without being plugged in or hard reset even for the Genius Bar tech) I have a call setup first tomorrow to speak to an upper level engineer as the Genius Bar felt that the issue needed that degree of escalation so I’m hoping that they will be able to shed some light on the issues I’m experiencing and if they are all related or not. Congrats on your resolution and here’s hoping that tomorrow they can find mine!

The apple Genius Bar tech (techs actually because more than one, including the store manager, collaborated during my last appointment) disagree with your assessment I’m afraid. Since they actually work for Apple I feel that I should follow their instructions and I will be speaking with the upper level engineer as they requested me to. Please do not feel the need to reply to me again, with your opinion that the issues are not related. Believe me when I say that I have heard your opinion loud and clear, numerous times now, and I have thanked you for your input even though I might not agree with it. If, in the end, it turns out that the issues truly are not related, wonderful, there’s been no harm done by me further investigating the issue. If it turns out that they are related then I will have made a step forward in helping others with this issue. Whichever the case may be, the time I spend working with the engineers is mine, and doesn’t affect you in any way, so I’m not really sure why you are so invested in my actions. Thank you again for your input and I hope you have a good day.

Hi Maryanne, I just got my second phone and have the same issue. You said you would explain the process you went through to get a non-flashing phone. Can you please share with me before I waste another 3 hours getting a third phone? Thank you so much! I feel like I'm going crazy since the Verizon guy and 3 apple people told me they've never heard of this problem! :(

Just got off the phone with Apple and the case and diagnostic logs have been received by the senior engineers. I made them aware that this is a worldwide issue and have given them the links to the assorted threads regarding this issue here on Apple communities as well as on Mac Rumors. I have a callback from them scheduled for Friday. They need a few days to research the issues myself and others have noted here. I will report back with an update once I speak to them on Friday and see what they have come up with to that point. Once an issue goes from senior support up to the senior engineers it can take awhile as they do dig deeply, often requiring different logs than what were initially sent so now it’s just a wait and see situation. Have a great day y’all!
