Apple CarPlay keeps disconnecting (2021)

Wireless CarPlay on my 2021 Hyundai i30 keeps disconnecting at random intervals. In addition to that, it also disconnects at one specific location during my morning commute to work without fail every morning. To me they seem like two different issues, even though they share the same outcome.

The audio unit issuer for Hyundai, Seednav, has already released an update regarding this concern and I have installed it in my car. Unfortunately the issue still remains the same. Recent communications with Seednav have resulted in the blame being pointed towards apple. Is there a fix in the making for this issue?

Hi Guys,

Hope all staying safe in this difficult times. I was going through this discussion and thought of giving some input. Apple car play works good with cars which don't have wireless carplay option (considering all othet parameters are good). With wireless carplay unit it wouldn't let you use carplay with wire option by default it uses wireless option. I have tried all kia and hyundai car in one particular spot it wouldn't work if I move the car and try again it works. But Android Auto works well in that same spot. Also some people has issue every time passing the toll. Some interference causing apple to drop wireless connection could be for security reason. This post is not to blame phone or car manufacturer, provided information so that either of them can look in to the issue with more information. If apple allows option of having cable or wireless, we can try cable only to see if it makes any difference. Lets wait and see what update is issued by who to fix the issue.

Ok, so I had my car system updated today and yes, I have the latest iOS installed but I’m still getting the same message that ‘my phone is not responding’ when using Google Maps. Spotify seems to keep going regardless but it’s the maps I want! Am going to try Waze and will report back for anyone following this in Australia or wherever Waze is downloadable as to whether there are still issues. This is so frustrating. I’ve had cars with cabled systems on loan and no issues. It just seems to be Bluetooth! Come on Apple/Hyundai. We need a solution which stops this message coming up every few seconds!!

For me this happens always at the exact same spot on the road. Exactly the spot down to a few feet.

When it happens, the wireless carplay disconnects and is not able to reconnect even if i reset the entertainment system and the phone.

I wonder if it's limited to Hyundai / Kia / Genesis who share the same entertainment system software, or does this happen on other cars as well.

Bought the 2018 Elantra in April 2021 and all worked fine. Just in the last two weeks I’m having constant dropouts with Apple Music via Car Play. Reconnected, reset, etc. I know it’s an Apple issue and specifically an Apple Music issue since I also have Spotify on my phone and that has been playing without interruption whenever I switch over to it.

@djwilly - I think this thread is talking about problems with Wireless CarPlay, I believe the 2018 Elantra uses a wired connnection (i may be wrong).

That said, if it's only Apple Music that is affected in your case (i.e the CarPlay display works ok) you should open the music app on your phone when the issue happens and see if there are any warnings.

For me, something like that happened once and I got a message saying that my Apple Music account is being used on 2 devices at the same time (my kids were using it at home and I was trying to use it at the car).

Might be worth checking for any messages in the app.

Having just bought a new Hyundai Kona with Apple Car Play, I’m getting exactly the same problem. With CarPlay disconnecting around 30 times on a 1.5 hour journey. Driving me crazy! Most fingers seem to point towards Apple for a fix, but I’ll be raising this through the dealership today. It’s definitely a safety issue too, with the maps disappearing suddenly whilst driving and requiring a physical reset to get them back up (acknowledge the disconnect then press CarPlay seems to reset it).

Did you ever find a solution for this problem? I had a 2020 Hyundai Sonata, and Apple Car Play (not wireless) worked like a charm. Then someone t-boned me, and I got a 2021 Hyundai Sonata with wireless Apple Car Play, and it keeps disconnecting. I deliver food for GrubHub, so it's a major problem for me. When i went to the dealership to ask what could be done, they didn't seem to know and claimed that there have been lots of issues with the wireless Car Play. Yesterday, I got a message on my dashboard that said, "Apple Car Play brain damage!" What the ****?

If you know anything I don't, please pass it along. Thanks!

First time I’m hearing about the “Brain damage” message.

As far as a solution is concerned, so far I know for a fact that 14.6 update fixed most of the random disconnection issue. Now the disconnections are almost always related to RF interference. Mostly when going near cell towers or power lines. Yesterday it happened to me when going alongside the tram line in Adelaide. Not sure how much of an improvement we can expect from a software update for this issue.

My suggestion to Apple and OEM radio manufacturers would be to work on a solution to automatically reconnect the phone and the head unit once they are disconnected due to interference. This should cut down 90% of the inconvenience we all are facing because of this issue.

The bottom line is we can’t do much to fight radio frequency interference cutting off the WiFi signal unless we make massive hardware improvements both to the head unit and the phone. The best workaround would be to find a way to seamlessly reconnect when the signal is disrupted.
