Apple CarPlay keeps disconnecting (2021)

Wireless CarPlay on my 2021 Hyundai i30 keeps disconnecting at random intervals. In addition to that, it also disconnects at one specific location during my morning commute to work without fail every morning. To me they seem like two different issues, even though they share the same outcome.

The audio unit issuer for Hyundai, Seednav, has already released an update regarding this concern and I have installed it in my car. Unfortunately the issue still remains the same. Recent communications with Seednav have resulted in the blame being pointed towards apple. Is there a fix in the making for this issue?

The latest update from Apple (14.5) has given me enough proof to say that this is mostly an Apple issue rather than the manufacturers. Ever since my phone was updated to 14.5, the dropouts have reduced significantly. I managed to do a 3 hour journey today with maps and spotify running for the entire jorney without any issues.

Although it hasn't completely cured the problem, it seems like we are one step closer to the solution.

It’s happening with wireless CarPlay as well so it’s not just the cord that’s causing an issue. I had a 2016 Elantra with wired CarPlay and no issues. Now I have a 2021 Elantra with wireless CarPlay and have issues with it disconnecting randomly. I don’t have the option of using a USB cord anymore for CarPlay but I can tell you it’s not the cord that’s causing these disconnection issues because wireless Apple CarPlay is experiencing the same disconnection issues.

I did not say all, but I can tell you I have had zero issues with CarPlay on vehicles from Toyota, Jeep and Nissan.

Believe me, I tried to get this issue to reproduce but it worked perfectly every time.

Note that many car makers outsource their in-car infotainment systems to various manufacturers so they don't have to deal with them.

For example:

It can also vary by geographic location:

Have had the same issue ever since getting me Hyundai Venue 2021. Have had numerous updates on it. Changed out the entire headunit and no luck what so ever. Hyundai keeps saying it’s apple’s fault. They always tell me to wait for a new update (told me this 5 times now). Every Apple update never mentions fixes to Apple car play (Apple not listening). It had gotten to the point where Hyundai is offering me a refund on the car!!!! Absolutely fuming.

It started happening on the 13th (I was unaware of the 14.8 release or I would have tried to undo that update)...anyway I was hoping 15 would fix it but in the release notes it mentions that planned CarPlay updates were omitted from the release). I am not saying it is Apple's fault per se (because it may be quite possible that the car makers didnt make a change they should have) but if at least Apple would acknowledge the issue and then we would know who's responsibility it is to fix it.

@de_mg Can you clarify. Are you saying you disabled bluetooth and just used Wifi?

Isn't Bluetooth needed for Phone Calls and Media Streaming (Spotify, Amazon Music)?

Wifi is used for the projection of the phone to the car screen.

What's why I don't understand the problem. Seems you need both subsystems. However the phone is 2ft from the infotainment system. So you should never be out of range of Bluetooth or Wifi. The flaw to me is the wifi not the bluetooth. There are too many things that can interfere with wifi and it that gets interrupted it drops the entire signal to the phone and all streaming stops and phone projection.

I didn’t mean the complete issue has stopped. If you paid attention from the start, there were two distinct issues with wireless CarPlay dropping out.

  1. Random dropping out regardless of the location.
  2. Location specific dropping out caused by RF interference.

I hardly ever experience (1) anymore. But (2) is guaranteed every time I drive.

It may seem like one big issue but when you live with it long enough you start to see the patterns and notice the subtle differences.

Well folks, I among others asked for help regarding this issue. I have a 2018 Cadenza (Kia) And just purchased a new iPhone… Which has all the bells and whistle’s. The only thing it didn’t do is connect to my car. There have been a couple of references on this thread regarding using an authentic Apple cable versus a store-bought. Well after months of being frustrated and screaming at my dashboard, I decided to take the advice. As of today, problem solved. Thanks to those who suggested the idea; if anything changes I’ll let you know! But I was driving around all day today and not once was there a disconnect. Thanks again to everyone.
