Kindle reader on MacBook Air/Big Sur- crashes after about 10 - 15 seconds.

I uninstalled Kindle, downloaded the app from the App store, reinstalled and... same problem. Don't know what to do. I have several books I need for work and I can't access them.

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.2

Only Amazon can solve the largely reported Kindle v1.3.0 crashing on Big Sur. With a 1.7 rating from 1800 users in the Mac App Store, it cannot be because Amazon Mobile is responsive to user feedback either.

As you have a critical path for work related needs, I suggest you resort to a physical device for reading your Kindle books, until such time that Amazon Mobile wakes up to user requirements on macOS Big Sur.

I have Big Sur and the Kindle app installed and do not have any problems. I suggest downloading, installing and running the free app EtreCheck. Be sure to enable full disk access. Then save the report it generates and post it below under "Additional Text". This will provide a comprehensive overview of your computer and may point out something that is conflicting.

I'll let VikingOSX do a complete analysis of this EtreCheck report, but I would like to offer two things:

  1. Completely remove the AVG Anti-Virus app. It is not needed and tends to cause more issues than resolves them.
  2. At some point, you will want to look into your Mac's log files, specifically for app crash reports for the Kindle app. These logs are very helpful in diagnosing app crash issues. We can provide assistance on how to get to these logs.

As mentioned, that AVG anti-virus is perniciously present, and may be blocking some aspect of the Kindle application. You need to thorougly remove AVG, and that might be as simple as one of its menu items offering uninstall, or more elaborate steps from the vendor. There are no real viruses to be found on the Mac, just adware and malware which Malwarebytes can handle by itself. The built-in security, read-only system areas, for other reasons, will not allow Windows targeted viruses and trojans to install in Big Sur.

Once you have thoroughly removed AVG anti-virus, reboot your Mac, and re-install the Kindle v1.3.0 application. Any change in behavior? If it croaks again, remove Malwarebytes (its Help menu has an uninstall), reboot the Mac, and reinstall the Kindle v1.3.0 application again. Is it now stable?

You have a great many useless Internet Plug-ins still installed that Safari no longer uses. Silverlight was killed off on the Mac by Microsoft in late 2016. The Adobe Reader PDF plug-in is no longer used by Safari either.

I don't know where you are storing your Kindle books, but suspect may be DropBox or One Drive. Try placing one of the books on your Desktop and see if Kindle v1.3.0 remains stable reading that book.

EtreCheck is no longer in the Mac App Store and can be found at its website as EtreCheckPro. The Mac App Store was being a hassle for the developer and he chose to remove it. There might be something interfering with the Kindle application, but if that were the case, there have been many reports in the communities of v1.3.0 instability on Big Sur.

When you get the results from EtreCheckPro, copy and paste them into the Additional Text tool on the bottom toolbar:

The Kindle reader program is just not stable. Sometimes it'll start up and work, other times it crashes in seconds. It's a mess and Amazon doesn't seem too worried about it. I publish books and Kindle is one of the formats I publish too. I have to use my iPad & Kindle to check files out. The program on my Mac isn't usable any more.

Use the Books reader app built into the Mac. Or use the phone/ipad app. Sadly, there's no real workaround at the moment.
