Trying to adjust the color balance but it's not working for me. Both my Apple TV 4K and iPhone 12 Pro Max is on 14.5 and when I go to the setting on my TV the prompt comes up on the phone just fine. But when I click on "continue" it just gets stuck on "preparing".
I've restarted both the phone and ATV multiple times and both are on the same network.

OK, finally! What did the trick for me was finally figuring out that all the advice to “reset network settings” on the phone did not mean just forgetting and then rejoining the WiFi network, it meant actually Resetting the Bloody Network Settings via Settings/General/Reset! Worked like a charm! Whew!
As this is a new feature, I'm not entirely sure. Once I figured out you need to hold the phone lower to the target area than I'd assumed, mine fairly quickly went through the preparation step. It may be that the connection between the phone and the Apple TV is problematic. Do you have any nearby equipment that might cause interference?
iPhone 12 Pro Max with 14.5.1 and Apple TV 4K latest TViOS (5 May). TV Panasonic TH-42PZ700 (14year-old Plasma - I love it). Sound syncing worked, Color didn’t. Restarted iPhone and Apple TV. Same outcome. The TV does get as far as showing a few colour swatches in the iPhone area but then says it can’t read them. I’ll try the forgetting Wi-fi. Strange the sound sync works though …
Unfortunately, I have no advice to give, but I found it reassuring that I wasn't the only one experiencing this. I've reset both devices multiple times, been on the same network - just like you have - and it won't go beyond the "preparing" screen. Even the audio sync does the same thing. It's very frustrating and this is the only post I've seen related to it. Hopefully we'll find a solution soon - I'll keep you posted if so.
I have three AppleTV 4k models, an iPhone XR and I cannot get past "Preparing" either. Have rebooted all devices, all the ATVs are on ethernet, no luck.

I never even get the phone outline to show up on the screen.
I've also checked my network as I do a lot of adblocking and none of the devices in question are having trouble connecting to anything. I don't get it.
I’ve slightly different issue. The calibration process starts and then the calibration stuck on red color and nothing happens for next few minutes. How long the calibration process takes? I thought it’s around minute or two.
Same issue here, does it mean it only works for Apple 4K the 2021 version ?
Not from what I heard. If memory is right, any TVos running 14.5 (and the coinciding iPhone) should be eligible for this feature.
Same problem with an iphone 12 mini. Tried everything mentioned here. Stuck.
Resetting the network WiFi settings did not work for me. Forgot network on both devices and tried again multiple times. No joy. What gives?

Same here. Reset network settings, then forget and rejoin ssid, turned appletv on off. My iphone 12 pro never gets the notification to start Adjust Color Balance.
Once the sync audio failed once - my bad - I had to restart the Apple TV to get the notifications again.
