audio cuts when scrubbing through quicktime files

i've been experiencing a very odd problem with Quicktime and quicklook/preview:

i will open the video file, usually .mp4 exported from premiere pro with .h264 'match source - high bitrate' preset, and it will play no problem (audio+video). after that I'll usually spot check and scrub through the file and after that the audio cuts out completely. i've opened the files in VLC player and there are no problems, same with uploading them to any online platform.

any ideas?

People are saying that if you move the file to your desktop instead of the external then the payback works. In my case, that's what fixed the issue. It's a weird workaround. I'll save the raw footage to the external and do the Premier work out of the external, but then if I have to do playback work (this could be subtitling or analyzing) I will do it from the desktop. I have a Mac running Big Sur (11.6)

tl;dr so far for me: it's got something to do with the external harddrive

In my case at least, the solution was to move the file to the desktop and do the scrubbing there; even if all my Premier editing is on the external. I run a Macbook Pro laptop with Big Sur (11.6) as the OS and use Adobe products (Premier + Audition)

Here are some other threads on this:

Finally, like everyone is saying, I hope Apple/Adobe fix this ASAP!

Hope this helps and God bless!

Hi All,

I'm having the same issue with QuickTime Version 10.5 (1086.4.2) on Big Sur 11.4. The MP4 files will play from the start of the file and will have good AV Sync, as soon as I try to scrub to a different section of the file, the video plays just fine, but he audio drops out or starts playing from a different section of the file, sync is never regained. I can take these files into any other program and scrub the file with no issues. I can also take these files into a system that is running Catalina or previous and there is no issue. Seems like a bug in Big Sur.

One solution that I have found is to use ffmpeg to simply copy the audio and video streams into a new mp4 file. This new file then works as expected in quicktime and all other applications. This solution works in small scale, but when scaled to production use, it adds entirely too much time and doubles the storage needs. AKA not a good scalable solution.

colepat,

Thanks for following up with us! If you Option-Click the forward button to cycle through custom forward speeds, are you able to hear audio while scrubbing these video files in QuickTime? The 'Play a file' section of this link provides more information:

Open and play a file in QuickTime Player on Mac

Also, you may find the shortcuts and gestures listed in this link helpful:

Let us know how it goes.

Take care.

For what it's worth I've had issues with shorter (3-5 minute) videos too. I've just gotten in the habit of exporting full quality and then re-exporting in another video converter (iSkysoft). It's a hassle, but it works. Not sure if anyone has had the problem exporting from Premiere or Encoder 2022? There is (was?) an issue with dynamic linking with After Effects so I'm still on 2021.

Hi there colepat,

Thanks for joining us in Apple Support Communities! We understand you're unable to hear audio for video files in QuickTime after editing them. We're glad you're here, and we can help.

"Older or specialized media formats might not work in your app, because the format requires software designed to support it. If that happens, your app won't open the file or won't play back its audio or video." Have a look at this link to learn more:

If an audio or video file doesn't play on Mac

Keeping that in mind, did you save the converted file before closing it? This support article provides more information:

If QuickTime Player converts legacy media files before playing them

We hope this information is helpful. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any more questions.

Cheers.

Hi--I am using external HDD drives. I'm probably not the only one but I updated to Premiere 2022 and still have the issue (a nine minute video was fine but a 45 minute video was a mess). GrantCert--if you're using Quicktime player to transcribe video for subtitles (copying/pasting subtitles in), people have said that VLC works without issue--that might be a good alternative. You could also purchase dedicated transcription software. I like a program called F5 transcription but it isn't on the Mac App store any more. I'm sure other transcription programs are fine too. Good luck to you too!

hey there!

i do get audio actually, but as soon as i click further into the video and scrub through it the audio drops. if i let the video play without skipping ahead the audio never cuts out.

the media files are pretty basic .h264 video files and like i said they play fine in VLC player (even if i scrub ahead) and they also play fine in youtube/vimeo once they are uploaded. it is purely when i scrub through the video the audio drops out.

I have the same issue, when using arrows to fast forward I can no longer hear the audio, same when I use the cursor to scrub through to a particular section. I also tried fast-forwarding using CMD + Right arrow but still, there was no audio.

The videos I watch are usually tutorial videos that can be up to 4 hours long so I can't simply always just watch it from the start!

It works fine on my tv, or on a different program but I want to use quicktime for the PiP, I hope it can be fixed soon!
