audio cuts when scrubbing through quicktime files

i've been experiencing a very odd problem with Quicktime and quicklook/preview:

i will open the video file, usually .mp4 exported from premiere pro with .h264 'match source - high bitrate' preset, and it will play no problem (audio+video). after that I'll usually spot check and scrub through the file and after that the audio cuts out completely. i've opened the files in VLC player and there are no problems, same with uploading them to any online platform.

any ideas?

People are saying that if you move the file to your desktop instead of the external then the payback works. In my case, that's what fixed the issue. It's a weird workaround. I'll save the raw footage to the external and do the Premier work out of the external, but then if I have to do playback work (this could be subtitling or analyzing) I will do it from the desktop. I have a Mac running Big Sur (11.6)
